    PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

CELEBRATING THE WOMEN OF RMROn August 10th, we held our annual

Ladies’ Day track event at the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) track. This is a decades-old RMR event. It increases in popularity every year. This year we had 77 drivers and a long waiting list too.

Ladies’ Day has been very successful getting the women of RMR involved in the sport. So successful that the editor of Panorama decided to do a feature article. In the coming months expect to see Panorama publish the article.

Lynda Love and Stacy Benjatka-Robins chaired the event. It was truly amazing what a wonderful job Lynda and Stacy did. Their team of 117 volunteers executed the event flawlessly.

The following day, Pete “Zoom” Romenesko chaired our novice day at the CSP track. This was Pete’s brainchild several years ago. The CSP track is an ideal venue to give novices an introduction into high- performance driving. Pete and his team also executed the event flawlessly in making the weekend perfect!

August started out with our social at Ferrari of Denver. Steven Winkow, Director of Marketing for Ferrari of Denver was kind to sponsor the event for us. Some ask why we would have a Porsche event at a Ferrari dealer. It’s because our members are attracted generally to exotic cars. It is an attraction to look at Ferraris, McLarens or Lamborghinis. We are lucky that our social and membership chairs have the foresight to understand what our members enjoy. As usual, it was great fun, and thank you Ferrari of Denver for hosting our social.

On August 24th, Erik Behrendsen chaired our Triple Bypass Tour. Erik and his team started the event at Hagerty Insurance in Golden. Then he took us out US 6 and up through Clear Creek Canyon, over Guanella Pass, Kenosha Pass and over Hoosier Pass. The tour ended at Salt Creek Steakhouse in Breckenridge. The lunch was really enjoyable. I had the fried chicken club sandwich, and it was delicious. It was great seeing a lot of my Porsche friends. If you haven’t done a

tour yet, you need to do so. They are a lot of fun.

By the time you read this, our chairs Jon Barr and Carl Boecher will have run Smokin’ Tires and Smokin’ BBQ Autocross. I love autocross. Jon and Carl put on a good one. Lots of runs and great lunch by The Rusty Tapp Colorado BBQ and Catering.

September is an important month for our club. In 1992, RMR was the first region to hold a PCA club race. On the weekend of September 21st, RMR will hold its 27th club race. Doug Bartlett is our current esteemed club race chair taking the baton from Brian Leary last year. Also, with the club race, RMR holds an advanced solo-only DE. I always look forward to this DE.

Finally, don’t forget our club Picnic on September 8th. It will be at Bear Creek Lake Park. Look for our eblasts for information.

SWELTERING HEAT!We have had a few days here in

Denver that have been 100 or more degrees. This is HOT! I know my little air-cooled car does not like it when it gets this hot! Especially in the traffic we have! But then I had a crazy idea to visit family in the Palm Springs area in August. Well, let’s just say that when the temp gets to 115, even 120 degrees, you feel like you are in an oven! Just the heat in the shade was HOT!

While out in Palm Springs, I had time to stop by the local Porsche dealership. It looked very nice. It makes me excited to see how the new Stevinson Porsche showroom will end up looking like in person! They had lots of Cayennes and Macans in stock. I also had time to check out the new 2020 Corvette mid-engine C8 that was on display at the local Chevy dealer.

This car’s price starts out just under $60,000! We had a fun time checking out the display car and taking pictures! Then we also checked out the resort for Porsche Parade 2020! A very nice resort! And if you are a golfer or tennis player, Palm Springs is the place to go, especially in the winter!

I am really looking forward to our upcoming picnic! I’m sure we will have a wonderful turnout! It is the same place as last year. Not many places can handle a picnic for over 200+ members! Remember, it is a family picnic, so don’t be shy to bring the kids! Feel free to bring any games to play with your fellow members for a friendly competition! Food and drinks will be provided, so bring your appetite!

  • TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

There’s a rumor out there that my fellow CDIs and I are getting older. Well, physically maybe but mentally we are continuing to grow exponentially with more “seat time” as HPDE leaders. More than ever we are sensitive to listening to the needs of our participating drivers and volunteers, trying new things, and “raising the bar” with everything that we do.

That said, we have to prepare for the future - with this in mind, we initiated the Performance Driving Leadership Development Program this year. Instructors Jon Barr, Brian Bobich, Matt Diolosa, Dan Hartmann, Steve Keisling, Mark Perry, and Zach Schroeder stepped forward to form the inau-gural group.

They have already earned our respect as drivers and in-structors and, most importantly, they also have the right at-titude and are significant contributors to the success of our DEs.

To a person they are incredibly eager to learn how we do things while helping out with our DEs. Like our current CDI team, each brings something a little different to the table. For example, Jon’s playing a bigger role in our autocross program, Brian is everywhere at the track including doing the “CDI ride checks” for students who are ready to solo or advance in run groups. Both Matt and Steve have learned how to set up DrivingEvals, the program that is completed by participants after an event for student, instructor, and program evalua-tions. Matt also has sat in on several of Scott Henderson’s novice classroom sessions. Dan, Zach, and Mark are work-horses – they’ll take multiple students when there’s a need, work in the tower - you name it!

We’ll see them in action at the October 19-20 DE at High Plains Raceway – they are running the entire event under the supervision of Event Lead CDI Doug Bartlett!

All of us CDIs are so excited for them, and we are their biggest cheerleaders!

PAST EVENT : JUNE MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL

Our Northern Colorado Social on June 29 was a hit! If you missed this event, you missed out on a ton of fun!

Poudre Sports Car had their biggest turnout! People were so excited for this social that they started to show up an hour early! The parking lot was full an hour later! And more people and cars kept coming!

Brothers, Zach and Stefan Schroeder, were great hosts and provided a large amount of food and drinks that were consumed by members and patrons alike. We had such a variety of cars from a few 356s to new GT3s! We also had many raffle prizes courtesy of Poudre Sports Car and Adam’s Polishes! Congrats to all the winners! Even after the raffle was over, the party ran late! If you know Zach and Stefan, you know these are good people, skilled mechanics, and are also great sponsors of the club!

We are already looking forward to next year’s social. Thanks for a great time!

PAST EVENT : GLENWOOD SPRINGS TOUR

    Photos: John Mackin

On Friday August 2nd, over 40 Porsches assembled in the parking lot of Tipsy’s Liquor World in Littleton to be-gin a three-day adventure to western Colorado. They assembled into four run groups and began Friday’s 350-mile drive that provided the opportunity to enjoy the ma-jestic beauty and varied landscape of western Colorado’s Scenic Byways, including high mountain passes, deep canyons and grassy plains with rolling hills. Tour lead-er Mark Taylor prepared exceptionally detailed route in-structions, including a 19-page document describing all the sights along the way. Of the four run groups, one was dedicated to Macans and Cayennes. After travelling through Fairplay and Monarch Pass, the three sports-car groups proceeded through Black Canyon of the Gunni-son and on to Paonia for lunch. The SUVs took a different route after Gunnison going to Crested Butte for lunch. From there they took an almost 40-mile off-road route to Meridian Lake Reservoir for a view of Lake Irwin and then back to join the other groups for an hour-long tour of Redstone Castle, an early 20th Century example of the wealth afforded to some by Colorado’s natural resources. The next and last stop of the day was at the Residence Inn in Glenwood Springs where tour participants cele-brated with a reception at the hotel.

After driving for about seven and a half hours on Friday, Saturday was a welcome day of rest where participants enjoyed the various activities in Glenwood Springs in-cluding Hanging Lake, the various hot springs in the area, a gondola ride to Glenwood Springs Adventure Park, and the charming town of Glenwood Springs. In the evening, the 84 participants joined together for a superb catered buffet dinner where they compared notes on the day’s activities and swapped Porsche stories.

On Sunday, the group headed out Glenwood Canyon travelling 150 miles through Eagle, Kremmling, Granby and to Grand Lake for lunch, marking the official end of the tour. Several of the cars returned to the front range by Trail Ridge Road, at 12,183 feet the highest continuous paved road in the United States, through the grand vistas of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Many thanks to tour organizers Mark Taylor and Holly Jackson who organized such an outstanding tour. The directions were comprehensive and flawless, and all the arrangements were superb. One of the tour participants came all the way from Tennessee for this tour and noted that it was the most scenic and best organized PCA tour he had ever been on.

  • PAST EVENT : RMR’S ANNUAL LADIES’ DAY

    22 HighGear | Celebrating 61 Years | 1958 - 2019

This year’s RMR Ladies’ Day “Pretty. Fast. Women.” was a spectacular success! Thanks to the ingenuity and ambition of over 100 volunteers, this year’s Ladies’ Day was our largest event yet! We had more drivers (75!) and more sponsors (14!) than ever before! Also, we finally made the big time with national attention from PCA! Thanks to Chief Driving Instructor (CDI) Vicki Earnshaw’s persistence, a reporter and photographer came to cover Ladies’ Day for PANORAMA, PCA’s national magazine.

The morning of August 10th dawned with partly cloudy skies and a good weather forecast that would hold throughout the day. The event venue, the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden, had already been set up the previous evening. The first major task for organizers was getting all the drivers parked in the paddock. Seventy-five drivers meant paddock space would be tight. Starting at the entrance gate, several volunteers directed the cars, with Kathy Fricke having the honor of telling each woman exactly where to park. Once parked, the ladies unloaded their cars and checked in with Bill Allen, the Ladies’ Day Registrar. Bill and his assistant Frank King gave necessary information and a goody bag to each driver. Attendee Barb Treacy commented, “Somehow you found room to park all those cars, and registration went smoothly.”

While the drivers were getting ready, other volunteers arrived early to do their part. For example, Chris Sulley briefed the corner workers and Brian Love tech-inspected cars that hadn’t already been inspected prior to the event. Nancy Buehmann and George Strimbu prepared to monitor the track from the tower. Harry Jones was wrangling equipment, ice, and water. Membership Chair Holly Jackson set up a table with PCA membership information. Vicki Earnshaw and Vicki Cox-Jones checked in the instructors. Some instructors grabbed a cup of coffee from sponsor Dan Fead of Sotheby’s Realty before they searched for their students. (Smiling broadly, Dan Fead pulled me aside to tell me how happy he was to be involved with Ladies’ Day. Each year he cheerfully brings coffee and bananas for everyone to enjoy.)

The hustle of the morning came to a halt at 8:30 for the mandatory Driver’s Meeting. Ladies’ Day Co-Chairs Lynda Love and Stacy Benjakta-Robins welcomed the attendees and thanked the Ladies’ Day sponsors. For the third year in a row, Zach Schroeder’s Poudre Sports Car was the Title Sponsor! New Platinum Level sponsor this year was All Copy Products. Returning Gold Level sponsors were Prestige Imports, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker’s Revalla Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics, and Dan Fead of Sotheby’s Realty. New Gold sponsors were Denver

Auto Shield and Stevinson Automotive. Returning Silver Level Sponsors were Autoworks Colorado, Lisa Bryan’s Candlelight Tavern, and On-Site Tires. Technical Sponsor 3zero3 Motorsports provided technical support via their truck and crew. Finally, two sponsors who provided promotional items were Adam’s Polishes and Hagerty.

Next, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Fleet Manager Karen Griggs talked about the event charity, the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation (cspff.net). The Foundation supports spouses and dependent children of troopers killed in the line of duty. In addition, the Foundation helps surviving spouses and children achieve their higher education goals. With five troopers killed in the line of duty since 2015, the Foundation is an essential resource to surviving family members. Donations to the Foundation were taken throughout the weekend via lunchtime charity rides and the charity donation bucket, raising a total of $1011 for the Foundation during Ladies’ Day and the Novice DE.

Then CDIs Vicki Earnshaw and Scott Henderson covered track procedures, safety, and flags. After their presentation and a quick group photo, the driver’s sessions began with the BLACK run group on track, while the BLUE and GREEN run groups went into the classroom. Ladies’ Day was truly in motion!

Ladies’ Day literally could not run without CDIs Vicki Earnshaw and Scott Henderson. Quite simply, Vicki was everywhere. She commandeered the radio, listening intently each time the radio squawked. Then she quickly made decisions about on-track and off-track issues. Additionally, Vicki is the one whom all the drivers saw as they exited the track at each session’s end. Vicki waved at each driver, soliciting a “thumbs up” sign.

The drivers were so focused that she didn’t get many responses in return after the first session. But after subsequent sessions, the drivers started responding with enthusiastic “thumbs up” signs as they drove by. Vicki, Scott and I got the most “thumbs up” responses from both drivers and instructors at the end of the day’s last session. After reflecting on Ladies’ Day, Vicki wrote, “Ladies’ Day is the most rewarding event I do all year. This is the largest all-women’s day in the United States - 75 women, and this year 39 first-timers to a track. It’s gratifying to share the passion I have for driving with these women.”

While Vicki handled the track, Scott Henderson handled the classroom sessions. He reported that the classroom was “very interactive.” The ladies asked good questions, especially in follow-up classroom sessions. Scott also celebrated obvious improvement. For example, he recognized Cherie Talbert by name in the classroom: “Super driving, Cherie! A rising star!”

CSP Trooper Angela “Angie” DeGuelle represented the State Patrol at their track. She and CSP Fleet Manager Karen Griggs were both impressed by the organization of Ladies’ Day. Trooper Angie appreciated the focus on safety; all cars underwent a tech inspection before going on track; everyone wore a helmet while on track; and only drivers with known experience drove solo while everyone else had an instructor. Additionally, Karen liked that the driving skills the ladies learned would translate to safer driving on the street.

Later that morning, Adele Arakawa gave Trooper Angie a ride in her racecar. Adele said, “Angie was a perfect passenger. She knows the State Patrol track, but from behind the wheel of a Crown Vic. After Vicki Earnshaw helped strap her in (HANS device and all), we took off. After I heard a squeal that people usually make on the first downhill run on a rollercoaster, I looked over and saw a big grin on Angie’s face. I know that grin. All was good.”

As Ladies’ Day continued, stories of women helping women emerged. For example, former Ladies’ Day chairs Susan Bucknam and Dr. Lisa Hunsicker helped Susan’s daughter-in-law Robyn Bucknam. Robyn recently completed treatment for breast cancer and will be undergoing reconstructive surgery soon. Dr. Lisa Hunsicker, who performs breast reconstructive surgery, listened to Robyn’s story. Susan shared her Cayman with Robyn so she could attend Ladies’ Day. Robyn gratefully commented regarding her mother-in-law and Ladies’ Day, “Susan inspires me every day. She is strong, brave and seeks out challenging forms of fun. I think she knew that a day at the track was just what I needed to remember the fun and exhilaration of doing brave things that are outside my comfort zone! It’s also so great to be at an event surrounded by women, many of whom are doing something completely new and a little nerve wracking. Seeing

them become more and more confident every turn around the track is amazing!”

First-time driver Angela Wong and long-time driver Susan Bucknam also showed how motorsports participants help each other at the track. Angela said, “I was slightly disappointed when I saw I was running low on gas before the last session of the day. Luck would have it that Susan Bucknam (who I had only met during lunch break) overheard my plight and kindly offered me five gallons of gas. I offered to pay for it, but she wouldn’t take any money for it. So, I put $20 in the charity pot. With the tank gassed up I was ready for the last session! It turns out it was my best round of the track for the day. I wanted to go around one more time when the session ended!”

Brenda Konno and her daughter Ryanne Konno came to Ladies’ Day because it sounded like a relaxed and safe environment to enjoy time together and try something new. Brenda said, “My daughter Ryanne and I had a blast! I would highly suggest all ladies try this event in the future.” Brenda also had high praise for their instructor, Chad Habegger. “Chad was awesome! He put us both at ease and yet helped us meet our challenges. Ryanne is hooked on it now!”

Sarah Murphy returned to Ladies’ Day and worked with instructor Mark Perry for the second year in a row. (Sarah was the subject of my May HighGear article, subtitled: “How the Skills I Learned at Ladies’ Day Saved My Life.”) Sarah brought her new MINI Cooper S and had a great time chewing through the car’s brake pads. This year she also brought a friend, Gwenn Beaver, who drove from Albuquerque, NM in her VW GTI especially for the event. Sarah said, “Back in high school Gwenn’s dad bought her a Porsche, so she was enjoying all of the cars.”

On-Site Tires sponsor Chris Macarak brought his truck to Ladies’ Day along with three $200 gift certificates. In addition to helping the ladies with tire-related issues, Chris’ mission

was to find appropriate recipients for the certificates. The first certificate went to Ladies’ Day Registrar Bill Allen, whose role is vital to Ladies’ Day. Bill spent many hours fulfilling his duties before, during, and after the event. The second certificate Chris gave to Linda Bobich (mother of RMR instructor Brian Bobich) because she was the first driver who was allowed to drive solo for the rest of the day. The final gift certificate went to Mika Hamer, who spun her 1990 Carrera. Chris worked to remove rocks from the Carrera’s tires. Mika’s instructor Adele Arakawa had this to say about the incident, “She got back on the horse with no hesitation and was making great strides by her final session on her very first day on a track. Chris helped bolster confidence further with the gift certificate and Mika said she would absolutely consider doing another track event.”

These are but a few moments in the day in the life of Ladies’ Day. But Ladies’ Day could not happen without significant volunteer help too. This year was no exception, and according to Bill Allen, 42 instructors and 35 volunteers stepped up to help. Thank you to every one of you! Also, 40 “pit crew” members accompanied the drivers.

All in all, 75 ladies had a wonderful time tearing up the Colorado State Patrol Track on August 10th. There were mothers and daughters, other family groups, and groups of friends all sharing in the comradery that is Ladies’ Day. CDI Brian Leary summarized the day this way, “The thing that stood out more than anything else about Ladies’ Day was the incredible smiles on the driver’s faces as they came off track after their sessions. In the fourth session, I watched the drivers clapping and giving high fives to their instructors. This event was a home run, and one of the best I’ve seen from my many years of instructing at Ladies’ Day.” CDI Chair Dan Carlson echoed Brian’s observation saying, “It was an event, not just a DE!”

This monthly letter is being dreamt up during “Speed Week” at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Scheduled to start last Saturday, it looks like the shortened week will begin tomorrow, a Tuesday. The delay is thanks to two thunderstorms last week. Salt needs time to dry in order to become safe again for racing. Such are the narrow parameters needed to run the safest possible event for those who want to set world records. But thinking about one of the more unique re-cords at Bonneville reminded me of a former Zone Rep, Sean Cridland (Sean still holds a world record from “speed skiing” while strapped on the roof of a car at 162 MPH on the salt.). And thinking about Sean remind-ed me of yet another newly minted author in our midst, Chris Lennon. And that finally led me to take stock in the overall level of talent that’s scattered throughout our regions. Let’s start there, and we’ll work back to Sean and Chris!

For those of you who have been to a Porsche Parade, you will be aware that the national awards for the prior year’s activities are announced throughout the week, at vari-ous banquets in front of nearly 1000 people. One of the really BIG awards was won by the Alpine Mountain Region. The award is the “Betty Jo Turner Award” for Best Overall Newsletter for AMR’s Mountain Passages monthly publication. Newsletters take a vil-lage to create and maintain. They also evolve in order to continually improve and pull in advertisers. So at the risk of offending those who chase down advertisers and content writ-ers, or those who contribute to the process of getting each issue published and mailed, I’d like, at minimum, to recognize the 2018 ed-itor Matt Ardaiz. And realizing that it took a lot of formative years to get the newsletter to its current state, a lot of development cred-it should also be attributed to Bill Cosper, Matt’s predecessor for the many years just prior to Matt’s tenure. I should also men-tion that during tonight’s semi-annual board meeting conference call with 145 invited re-

gion Presidents, Cindy Jacisin, PCA’s Vice President chose this award as one of four National Awards to highlight as she recapped activities at the recent Porsche Parade. Con-gratulations to AMR and its leadership under Denise Jordan.

Four additional national awards within the zone were announced at the event in Boca Raton. These were awarded to the Rocky Mountain and Roadrunner Regions. The awards included a first place in the Region Website Class V category in RMR. Congrat-ulations to Webmaster Scott Rogers. Next, RMR took 2nd place in the National Awards for Best Newsletter in a Class VI region. And Roadrunner Region also took a news-letter award, a 2nd place among Class IV re-gions. Nothing like a little neighborly com-petition with AMR, right? Congratulations to Tom Champion, newsletter editor RMR. And also to Steve Waller and Ann Mulhern who are collectively credited with a five-year string of national newsletter awards. And a really special recognition to Bill Simon who, if I understand correctly, is instrumental in providing publication support for BOTH the RMR and AMR newsletters. Finally, a third national award was won by the RMR region: a 3rd place for Public Service. In other Pa-rade competitive news, I also understand that we had two Concours entries from the RMR region who won their respective classes. Congratulations to Dave and Bette Seeland, as well as Jim and Randy Osgood!

No mention of awards won should go with-out recognition of the nominations for awards NOT WON. Every year, the zone rep has the dubious expectation from PCA national lead-ership to pester region presidents to make or assign nominations for the top national awards. Considering and creating these nom-inations takes A LOT of time. And because it takes a lot of effort, no nomination gets written unless the person making the nomi-nation truly believes that the national recog-nition should be warranted. Having read all

of this year’s nominations it would be wrong to NOT recognize the intended recipients and those who wrote the nominations. I’ll leave the specifics to each region to announce, but special recognition should be made to Gigi Camarena and Jim Thorburn as Presidents of IRPCA and RMR regions respectively and to John Mackin as Past President of RMR. You were all involved in one way or another in either nominating or being nominated for Region of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, or Charity of the Year Awards. Your work is not lost on anyone, even though in each case, the BIG NATIONAL award was taken by anoth-er amongst the 145 PCA regions.

Now, coming back to recognition of moun-tain west PCA members who are spreading their writing talent around the world, I just want to make a short mention of two books published within the last year. I’ve pur-chased and read one of them and look for-ward to doing the same for the second. Many of you may already be aware of former Zone 9 Rep Sean Cridland’s, “HURLEY: From the Beginning”, co-authored by Sean and Hurley Haywood. Sean traces his 9 years as the newsletter editor for the Roadrunner Re-gion’s “Ramblings” as the beginning of his industry-wide Porsche-oriented article writ-ing career. During his tenure, the newsletter placed on the PCA National Awards “podi-um” twice! The new book also includes a LOT of Sean’s incredible photography. Nice-ly done Sean.

Finally our perennial Pike’s Peak racer, Chris Lennon, from the Alpine Mountain Region, has recently released his own book titled, “The Peak of Racing” (www.peakof-racing.com). Chris’ most recent run up the hill was in a fully electric….wait for it….911! I’m looking forward to reading this book as well. He added a sixth podium finish to his record (in the rain this time)! Congratula-tions, Chris!

  • I GET AROUND

    Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

Yes, it’s true. Give me some racing footage. A good, unpredictable story that sucks you in. Great dialog. The chance to shed a tear or two. And I’m there.

Does “The Art of Racing in the Rain” qualify? Well, I read the book when it first came out and loved it. So I had to see the movie. We went on opening night. I think it works pretty well. At least against its historic competition. Although that may be damning with faint praise.

First off, let’s pause and acknowledge the competitive pantheon … “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans” … and move on. Then what have we got?

Not many. And that’s the point. Remember, we’re not talking about movies that have cars in them; movies like “Gone in 60 Seconds” or the “Fast and Furious” franchise. Or movies with chase scenes like “The French Connection.” They’re a dime a dozen.

No, we’re talking about serious films that revolve around racing. There’s “A Man and a Woman,” where the male lead, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, is a racer who is shown driving in the Monte Carlo Rally … in a … stumped? Gotcha. But can you hum the movie theme? I knew you could.

“Bobby Deerfield,” with Al Pacino in the lead. It was directed by legend Sydney Pollack. But it was panned by critics and is largely forgotten today.

“Winning.” Remembered mainly as the film that hooked Paul Newman on racing. For life.

“Driven.” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky meets a racing car” movie. I came, I saw it, I left. What got to me was when I read that they filmed the cars going a maximum of 90 mph or so. Indycars. “The audience won’t be able to tell the difference,” they said. Not true.

“Rush.” About t he Lauda-Hu nt competition during the ’76 Formula 1 season. What do I remember? The crash, of course. And the aftermath, where the film did a great job of capturing the off-the-

charts focus and pain of Niki Lauda. Made all the more poignant with his passing this year.

And, just for grins, there’s “The Racers.” Featuring Kirk Douglas. From 1955. I remember watching it once. Although, for the life of me, I can’t remember anything about the film. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again, if I could find it.

I believe we should have a new addition to the list this month, with the upcoming “Ford v Ferrari.” I have high hopes. Although, and I had the same problem with “Rush,” it irks me to know, going in, how it ends. But, then again, it features Matt Damon and Christian Bale, who are both Academy Award winners. Although I have no idea how much either actually knows about cars and racing. Or whether it matters.

Which begs the question of whether any of this makes any difference in the quality and lasting ability of a film. Remember, the only test, ultimately, is time.

From my reading up on “The Art of …,” the male lead, Milo Ventimiglia, is an actor, plain and simple. Not a bad actor. But he’s not a racer. My understanding is that actor/racer Patrick Dempsey was a producer. And ace drifter and former “Top Gear” US host Tanner Faust did most of the driving. Indeed, in the rain in a Turner Motorsports BMW. Behind the wheel of a Penske Dpi Acura at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and also in, yes, a Wright Motorsports GT Daytona Porsche. He’s also shown drifting a new Ferrari coupe.

The footage looks really good. And, with all due respect to Faust, part of the credit for the action cinematography has to go to Jeff Zwart. Don’t know him? You know his work – virtually every car commercial that features action footage is his work as director. He’s also set a number of records in Porsches at Pike’s Peak.

As for the shots of Ventimiglia behind the wheel with the dog (he’s named Enzo), which is part of the trailer and used for the movie poster, that had to be the actor doing his own driving. Although he is, clearly,

not exactly exercising the Ferrari. Which is a shame. Because the car is a ‘50s classic which I’d love to hear at speed. My best guess is it’s a Testarossa. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Now, some critics have said the film is really a dog movie. I guess you could say that. And I guess some writer for a dog magazine is chronicling, right now, how the film stacks up against dog classics. Although I’m not sure there are any. Does “The Shaggy Dog” qualify? “Marley and Me”? “Beethoven”? “Lady and the Tramp”? “Old Yeller”? “Turner & Hooch”? “101 Dalmations”? How about my favorite, “Best of Show”? I have no idea. But, gee, I do think there are actually more dog movies than race car movies!

This film is narrated by Enzo, who’s a Golden Lab (using the voice of Kevin Costner). And he does do a great job of endearing himself to everyone with whom he comes in contact.

At one point, Enzo tells the audience that Mongolians believe in dog reincarnation. He explains, Mongolians believe that, if you’re a dog and you lead a worthy life, you will come back as the sort of human you most emulate. Enzo says he’s working on it. He’s “imprinting” all the knowledge he’s accumulating to be ready for his upcoming life as a human.

I gotta tell you, when I got home from seeing the film, I stared long and hard at my dog, looking for a sign, a hint, anything. No luck. All he wanted to do was go for a walk.

So, how does the film stack up as a work of cinema? I’ve no idea. See me in 10 years. If I told you anything else, that would ruin everything. I refuse to spill the beans. Although, if you read the book, as I did, it will all come rushing back. Just as, if you saw “A Man and a Woman,” you’d remember by now what he drove. Still stumped? Oh, ok, it’s a rally-prepared Mustang.

There just aren’t enough movies with racing. Cherish them always.

    DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
