Who Do You Call...… when Allie tumbles off the slide and breaks her wrist?

… when Sean tears his meniscus on the soccer field?

… when Mom strains a muscle while jogging?

… when Dad hurts his back doing yard work?

… when Grandma is in pain from arthritis?

… when Grandpa needs a hip replacement?

Whenever anyone in the family needs help with an orthopedic problem, Piedmont Orthopedics is here tohelp – and has been for nearly a half century.

A regional leader in orthopedics, Piedmont Orthopedics isdedicated to diagnosing and treating injuries or diseases ofthe bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and relatedstructures. In short, the physicians provide orthopedic carefor your whole body, from your neck to your toes.

“Our goal is to provide the help each individual patientneeds to keep moving, be productive and enjoy life,” saysMark Yates, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who is the seniorphysician in the practice and the chief of surgery for ConeHealth.

The medical staff at Piedmont Orthopedics includes six orthopedic surgeons, a primary care sports medicine specialist, a physiatrist, a rheumatologist and four physicianassistants. A seventh orthopedic surgeon joins the practicein August. Piedmont Orthopedics is a division of Southeast-ern Orthopaedic Specialists, the largest orthopedics groupin Greensboro.

Pioneering Treatment Founded in 1968, Piedmont Orthopedics began blazingnew trails almost immediately, when John H. Dilworth,MD, became the first orthopedist in Greensboro to performhand surgery using a microscope.

Over the years, Piedmont Orthopedics has continued tobring leading-edge diagnostic tools, treatments and surger-ies to the region.

Most recently, Christopher Blackman, MD, became the firstsurgeon in Greensboro to regularly perform anterior approach hip replacement surgery. He currently is teachingthe technique to other area surgeons. This leading-edgetechnique can reduce recovery time for patients.

“Within two weeks of my anterior approach hip replace-ment surgery, I was back to my normal routine of walkingthree miles in the park every day – and back to work at myjob,” said Nancy Geyer, who had a hip replacement per-formed by Dr. Blackman.

Also breaking new ground is Marcus Duda, MD, who has a special interest in diabetic and other complex foot andleg wounds. He is beginning clinical trials this year on amedical compression sock he has developed to aid in thehealing of chronic and complex wounds.

Sports Injury Specialists The physicians at Piedmont Orthopedics are specialists inthe treatment of sports injuries, whether they occur in children, adolescents, college players or older athletes.

For more than two decades, Piedmont Orthopedics hasserved as the team orthopedic physician for the Universityof North Carolina at Greensboro. One of the physicians sitson the bench at home soccer and basketball games.

When Nate Berry, then a UNCG soccer player, needed surgery to repair a shoulder injury, he sought help from G.Scott Dean, MD. Dr. Dean, one of the first orthopedists inthe country to earn subspecialty certification in sports medicine, specializes in treatment of shoulder and knee

disorders and arm and leg injuries.

"Dr. Dean's care and determination to help me get betterplayed a big part in my recovery," said Berry.

Whitfield, MD, currentlyserving a nine-year term on the Board of Trustees of ConeHealth, has more than 34 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon and has been chosen annually since2003 as a "Top Physician" or a "Top Doctor" in America.

James Nitka, MD, performs all types of orthopedic surgery, but also brings another dimension to the practice: expertisein spinal disorders. He completed a fellowship at the TexasInstitute for Spinal Disorders and is co-author of a bookchapter on spinal disorders.
