Maywood’s 111th Independence Day Parade Thursday, July 4, 2019

Dutch families from New Amersfoort (Long Island) and New Amesterdam (New York) came to New Jersey in the early part of 1600’s,

settling along the Hackensack River. They gradually expanded throughout Bergen County (named after the town of Bergen, in Holland)

Maywood, first called “West Hackensack” grew from a small group of settlers who cleared the woods and laid out their farms. It increased to almost 300 inhabitants in 1894, when it became a borough through the

democratic process of self-determination.

The most accepted origin for the town’s name comes from an ancient Dutch custom of festivals during the month of May celebrating the

return of spring. Settlers of Hackensack would go westward to picnic grounds along the hillslopes under the green foliage of trees in the woods

which they called “Maien Valdt” the English word “Maywood.

Family and friends gather togetherHere, in the USA … there is no place better Preparing to view a bright and colorful sky … Thank you 4th of July

In our small town we gather at Memorial Park playing in the sun while we wait for the darkFilled with sounds of laughter and children playing in the grassAs delicious smells of barbeque and popcorn passAs we stare at the bright and colorful sky … Thank you 4th of July

As we listen to the fireworks boomWe pay homage to 100 years of American Legion Post 142driving through our small town we pass Passaic Street The same one British and Continental armies crossed with their own feet

I write this to you so we can all remember the historythat shaped the town we know todaySo, thank you, Maywood for giving us a beautiful home to feel safe in all night and day

As we watch the bright and colorful fireworks boom Let us remember the hundreds of years it took to create Maywood and the American Legion, too
