Programming Vision

A new program from Heritage Toronto to celebrate and animate Toronto’s urban park heritage, Parks Past will bring together different perspectives on seven neighbourhoods, their local parks, and how they have changed over time.

Day-long programs will be held at one park each month between May and September 2017.

These day-long programs will be bookended by events at St. James Park (April) and Downsview Park (October), reflecting on the history and future of creating parks that have responded to the constantly changing city we live in.

Why parks?

Toronto’s urban parks are a microcosm of our city. Through them, we can understand our neighbourhood’s built, cultural, and natural heritage.

Parks are playful, celebratory, restorative, and creative. They cradle our communities’ rich pasts and provide inspiration for our city’s future.

“…[public parks] not only are directly promotive of health, but they afford the means for so large an amount of innocent amusement and healthful recreation as could scarcely be estimated, in this way tending to the sobriety and good order of the community far more than any restrictive regulations ever could.”

- Editorial in The Globe (February 12, 1873)

Programming values

Parks are malleable spaces. The programming of Parks Past will reflect the space it is in and respond to the history and present of the neighbouring communities.

Programs may explore cultural heritage, natural history and ecology, the park’s built environment.

Parks Past is a participatory program. Artistic and creative expressions, multi-sensory experiences and programming that encourages collaboration and co-creation are highly encouraged
