Celebrate Me Week Tuesday, July 17, 2017 Volume 29; Week 1, Issue 2 Canyon of Inferiority On Monday evening, our SOD Director Mackenzie talked to us about the canyons of inferiority that we face while in adolescence. Mackenzie told us that during adolescence, there will be all sorts of good stuff, but there will also be hard times too. She used the analogy of weather to show us how speed bumps come along in life. The wind, hail, and storms in our life can come in many forms. Whether it is a death in the family, a failed test, or losing a friend, we never really know what life will throw at us. Mackenzie also introduced us to the canyon of inferiority. This canyon is created through all the negative feelings and experiences we may have. Mackenzie shared two canyons that she has had in her life. The first canyon was a result of her choices. She entered a relationship and it seemed to be going well, but then it started to spiral downward and she wasn’t able to pull herself out of it. Mackenzie stressed the importance of realizing that we are not alone, and that when we see a red flag, we need to take a step back and think about whether or not it reflects our true self. Mackenzie’s worst canyon so far in her life was not something she really had control over. When her cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Mackenzie’s canyon started to deepen, and she had a difficult time dealing with what was happening. She recalled growing up with her cousin and looking up to her as a role model. By the time Mackenzie’s cousin passed away, she had spent a whole year in her canyon. It wasn’t until Mackenzie met up with a camp friend during college that she began to climb up and out. Mackenzie’s camp friend told her that if she ever needed him, he would be there for her. She didn’t realize it right away, but she needed the support of her camp friend. By leaning on her friend from camp, Mackenzie helped us see how blessed we are to be here at CMW! We all have a second family in this camp, and we all support and love each other! While it wasn’t her choice to go through the loss of her cousin, Mackenzie showed us that it was her choice to ask for help. By leaning on her friends, family, and God especially, Mackenzie was able to get out of her canyon! Mackenzie used her weather analogy again and said that all of the friends, tools, and memories we take with us from camp make up an umbrella for us that can keep us sheltered from the storms we face in life. She shared with us the song “Sanctuary,” which helped us to see how camp is kind of like a refuge for us. Camp friends become our family, and they can be valuable when overcoming our canyons. Mackenzie shared a new slogan with us as well: “You’re one in a million, don’t be a chameleon!” She told us to realize how special we are and stressed that there is no time in our lives when we should ever be anything less than who we are.

SOD: Start Our Day

On Monday morning, we got to wake up bright and early for our very first SOD with Mackenzie and Emma! We learned that our theme for the day is INFERIORITY. We defined inferiority as not being able to feel like ourselves, or feeling less valuable than another person. We also learned I.A.L.A.C – I Am Loveable And Capable. Collin’s heart became broken when people gave him Killer Whales. Instead of tearing people down, we want to make them feel good about themselves by giving Warm Fuzzies! Together we read Philippians 4:4-7, which helped remind us of God’s love for us as well as showed that we are never alone; even if we feel inferior, God is ALWAYS with us!

Critters and Company

“If you don’t like the way

I look, talk to God. I

just showed up!”

On Monday afternoon, we met Greg from Critters and Company. Greg brought some friends with him and shared stories and lessons to help us see how our attitudes can make a difference. Each animal that Greg showed to us taught us valuable lessons that we can add to our CMW Toolbox! We met Cisco the parrot, who taught us the importance of asking for help. We next met an owl named Mandy, and she taught us the importance of flexibility when things don’t go as planned. Todo the tortoise stressed that we just need to be ourselves. Kiwi, a wallaby, helped us see that we need to practice in order to make a difference. The snake shows us that we always need to be alert and pay attention. We were also shown a dove, which taught us the three words we need to think about before doing something: Do no harm. Finally, we saw a hedgehog, and we learned that when we have a problem, we should take it apart bit, by bit (by bit, by bit, by bit).

Afternoon FUN!
