Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival is an innovative event for the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, which acknowledges the valuable role that seniors play in our community and highlights the importance of engaging in the arts and creative activities to foster good health and wellbeing as people age.

Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival has been inspired by the creative ageing festivals in Ireland (Bealtaine), Wales (Gwanwyn Festival) and Scotland (Luminate).

Each of these festivals offers opportunities for older people to participate in the arts – through exhibitions, performances, film screenings, workshops, discussion groups, networking and sharing of experiences and information.

Evidence demonstrates the powerful impact that the arts can have on the health and wellbeing of older people – enhancing quality of life for people who are seeking to remain fit and well as they age and for people who live with a chronic condition such as dementia.

Health benefits through arts activities, such as dancing and singing, include improved mobility and motor control, improved heart and respiratory function, greater self esteem and confidence, less reliance on medication and personal care, higher social engagement and beneficial effects on mental health.

This is of particular importance to the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, which has the third largest ageing population and the second highest incidence of dementia in the State and is leading the way in developing Dementia Friendly Communities in NSW, led by local MP Leslie Williams.

Two special Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival events are ‘The Big Chat’ on Monday 23 March at the Glasshouse and PMHC’s “I’ve got Uke babe” - a program funded under Local Government NSW’s Creative Ageing strategy. Ninety seniors are learning the ukulele and a public performance will be included in the Festival.

‘The Big Chat’ is a one day event, supported by Arts Mid North Coast, which will explore what ageing looks like in the 21st Century and the benefits of creative ageing in terms of health, fitness, wellbeing and quality of life. The role of local government and the role of artists in supporting older people will be examined.

‘The Big Chat’ will also consider ways to challenge the barriers for older people to access cultural activities and events, including how to change ageist attitudes in society, the most effective ways of disseminating information to older members of society, advocacy for public policy, improved transport options, and moving isolated older people from the widespread reliance on television to engaging with community life in a more active, meaningful and rewarding way.

Expert speakers will bring clarity to these issues. Participants will engage in conversation and debate. Facilitators and artists will present demonstrations and workshops to increase knowledge and skills in area of care for older people. See pages 14 and 15.

Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival is presented by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and The Australian Centre for Arts and Health, with support from NSW Department of Family and Community Services and Local Government NSW.

Festival partners include Arts Mid North Coast, North Coast TAFE, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW (Mid North Coast), Hastings District Respite Centre, Catholic Care of the Aged, UnitingCare Ageing, U3A, The Whiddon Group, Port Macquarie Historical Museum, ABC Radio Mid North Coast and The Glasshouse Arts Centre.

Council is delighted to co-present a full fortnight of programs for those who are young at heart.

The Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival opens with Council’s hugely popular Sensational Seniors Expo, followed by a rich smorgasbord of workshops, exhibitions, concerts, performances and activities such as the Library Services One Book One Community event, free Art and iPad workshops, free Glasshouse Art Lecture Series and a special performance by our “I’ve got Uke, babe” ukulele seniors beginner group - as a special focus of Seniors Week this year.

Council is appreciative of sponsorship by the NSW Department of Family and Community Services and Local Government NSW as one of the State’s most innovative Councils exploring ways of ageing well. So dip in and explore new shows, programs and activities, make new friends, join new groups, be adventurous and have a happy Seniors Week.

Celebrate Creative Ageing and join us to explore what it means to be growing older in our society, why older people are so important in our community and discover the fun to be had in a creative ageing space.

We have planned a program which will form part of Seniors Week 2015 but have added a few extra days to fit in all the activities, exhibitions, performances and workshops we would like you to share and enjoy together.

The Celebrate Creative Ageing Festival runs from 15 March to 29 March 2015.

East Coast Encounter is a multi-arts initiative involving Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, writers and songwriters to re-imagine the encounter by Lt James Cook and his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770. Paintings, photographs, videos and three dimensional works are included alongside a small selection of historic artefacts.

The multi-media exhibition features a documentary DVD by Jeff McMullen AM, who has been a journalist, author and filmmaker for nearly 5 decades. Jeff was awarded the Order of Australia in 2006 for service to journalism and efforts to raise awareness of economic, social and human rights issues.

East Coast Encounter has been curated by John Waldron, from BlueSkyView Exhibitions Services in Queensland.

John will give a gallery floor talk about the exhibition as part of The Big Chat on Monday 23 March at the Glasshouse.

“Bowling Club” is a short film on the theme of Lawn Bowls, commissioned for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and created by Scottish visual artist, Janie Nicholl.

Players and enthusiasts from Willowbank Bowling Club and Burnbank Bowling Club in Glasgow were interviewed to find out their reasons for involvement in the game and to gauge the effect of the game on their lives, in terms of social interaction, physical fitness and community pride.

Archive footage from the Scottish Film Archive, with scenes of players from the 1920’s and thirties, create an interesting blend of the past and present and show how much and how little has changed.
