A hundred years ago, Billy Sunday, the most famous evangelist of his day, made his way through the country putting on revivals in every city he visited. Months before he visited places like New York City, Chicago or Atlanta, an advance team would work with locals to prepare for his visit. In New York, property was leased so they could build the 18,000-seat tabernacle in which he would hold his two weeks of revivals.

By the time he arrived in town the advance team was working in another city to prepare it for his visit. His re-

markable success as an evangelist was due, in large part, to the work of his advance team who prepared each place for his arrival and ministry.

In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? John 14:2

There is great solace and hope in this passage in which Jesus promises that he goes ahead of us to make sure there is a place prepared for each of us. It is startling and amazing to realize Jesus has committed that he will be our advance team in heaven. When we finally show up, after our years of earthly life, there will be a place that has been prepared especially for us.

Each of us can walk through life knowing that our advance team is none other than Jesus Christ himself. This news is all too easy to hear, celebrate and then coast through life knowing that we can’t possibly fail, given the power that resides in our advance team.

We are now in the midst of Advent. The scriptural phrase which is, in essence, the core theme of advent is “‘Prepare the way of the Lord.” It is a reminder that Jesus has arranged for his own advance team, and it is us.

This is our time to be the advance team. God is coming into our world through the birth of the Christ child this year. Let our hearts, our church and our world be pre-pared for his arrival by our faithfulness and willingness to proclaim the good news of God's most precious gift; His Son.

Vestry Slate for 2017

The Vestry Nominating Committee has announced its 2017 slate of candidates: Pat Brumbaugh, Ann Kimsey, Richard Lee and Carolle Perkins. Parishioners have until thirty days prior to the Annual Meeting to make additional nominations by submitting a petition signed by at least 3 parishioners in good standing. Those elected will replace Hal Daniel, Rebecca Mick, Kate Kenne-dy and Greg Vaughn, who will have fulfilled their terms as of January 2017. The Annual Parish Meeting is Sunday, January 22 at 11 a.m.

Pat is a life-long Episcopalian. He and his wife Ann started attend-ing St. Luke’s shortly after they moved to Atlanta in 1998. Pat and Ann have two children: Lucy, 14, and Jack, 12. Pat is a graduate of the Education for Ministry (EfM) program, a four-year theological education program administered by the School of Theology, the Uni-versity of the South. Pat partici-pates in St. Luke’s Healing Ministry,

teaches middle school Sunday School, and serves on the Board of Directors of Crossroads Community Ministries, Inc. Pat is a partner at King & Spalding LLP where he prac-tices on the Business Litigation practice group. His practice mainly involves representing lawyers and other profes-sionals, and he serves as his law firm’s Assistant General Counsel.

Ann Kimsey is a graduate of Leadership St. Luke's and serves as a Sunday greeter. She is active with Sojourners and One2An-other. Ann volunteers her time in the mailroom at Crossroads and is on the committee develop-ing the Ansley School. As a member of Vestry, she says she will be open and

willing to serving in any capacity needed.

Richard Lee is a longtime mem-ber of St. Luke's who has served two previous terms on Vestry, once as Senior Warden. He and his wife Kathy raised their boys at St. Luke's. Richard has been chair of the Finance Committee and Annual Stewardship Campaign as well as co-chair of the Tending the Fold campaign. He has taught Sunday School and been a mem-

ber of a rector search committee. In his professional life, Richard works in commercial real estate investment. He has served on the Board of Directors of Kanuga Confer-ence Center, Inc., is presently co-chair of Campaign for Kanuga and is a past trustee of the College Foundation of the University of Virginia.

Carolle Perkins is an active mem-ber of St. Luke's volunteering as a greeter, lector and leader of Sunday School spring cleaning. She is active in Bridge Builders and the Buck-head chapter of the St. Luke's book club; and serves on the Evange-lism Committee. Carolle retired in 2012 from Procter & Gamble. She volunteers in the mailroom at

Crossroads, with the Atlanta Regional Commission's RSVP program and at the Center for Puppetry Arts.

STEWARDSHIPHelp Us Close Stewardship on a High NoteSt. Luke’s Stewardship Committee is working to close out the Ponder Anew campaign for 2017’s operating budget. We wish to thank all those parishioners who have completed a pledge card and to encourage those who have not yet done so, to please complete and return their cards as soon as possible. Follow-up contacts with those who haven’t returned a card are being planned and calls will be made in early January. Thank you for being a part of and supporting our church’s ministry.

Pay by CardSt. Luke’s is pleased to announce that we now accept pay-ment of pledges and other gifts via credit card. Credit card contributions may be scheduled as one-time or recurring, and the set-up process is easy. If you wish to take advantage of this new contribution option, you will need an Access ACS account, which can be obtained by contacting Michelle Jemmott ([email protected]).

You Were Once Strangers: An Advent SeriesSt. Luke’s will be asking the question, “Who is the stranger among us?” as we consider the Holy Family as refugees in our midst—a family displaced during a vulnerable time, seeking the kindness of strangers. This Sunday, Cathryn Marchman of Partners for Home is one of the most instrumental voices for homelessness services in Atlanta. As we reflect on the displaced in our midst and the growing insecurity of affordable housing in our community, Cathryn will share with us the city’s new strategic plan for ending homelessness. St. Luke’s plays a role—what is it?

We celebrate the lives that make up the community of St. Luke’s Church.

Glenn Gallery

For the next three months, all who pass through the halls of St. Luke’s will be blessed and challenged by the Glenn Gallery’s guest art-ist exhibitor: Jim Loring. Jim is a humanitarian photographer, educator and speaker who has completed more than seventy interna-

tional assignments. He is the program director for the photography department at North Georgia Technical College. In his own words about the exhibit, Jim states:

“What does it mean to be a refugee? With your life in ruins you have witnessed the unthinkable and each day is a struggle to survive. This is true for each one of the people in these images. For some, they have had to flee from terror and the home where they long to return. For others, they have experienced a natural disaster where it is no longer safe to return. They have lost everything, and yet had been living as successful citizens in their respective lands. They were able to provide for their families and enjoyed a happy life. [The images hanging in the Glenn Gallery] are of refugees and Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP’s) from Syria, Mali, Nepal and Haiti… I hope these images spark interest, conversation and action. The world is a wonderful place; there is much to learn from and be inspired by. We can be heartened that, with concerted and sustained effort, the ills of the world can change for good. This is a day to step up and make a difference, a day to let your voice be heard.”

We asked Jim to share this exhibit with us, beginning in Advent, as we reflect on the Holy Family as refugees among us. We remember the Hebrew scripture, “You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”

Jim’s photography is available for purchase, with 10% of the proceeds benefitting St. Luke’s refugee ministry. Stay tuned for a reception in January, where Jim will be present to share more about his work and travels.
