And I remember Muscatine--still more pleasantly--for its summer sunsets. I have never seen any, on either side of the ocean, that equaled them. They used the broad smooth river as a canvas, and painted on it every imaginable dream of color, from the mottled daintinesses and delicacies of the opal, all the way up, through cumulative intensities, to blinding purple and crimson conflagrations which were enchanting to the eye, but sharply tried it at the same time. All the Upper Mississippi region has these extraordinary sunsets as a familiar spectacle. It is the true Sunset Land: I am sure no other country can show so good a right to the name. The sunrises are also said to be exceedingly fine. I do not know.

Dawn-to-Dusk: Dreams of Color Sunrise-Sunset Photography Contest
Meet the Jurors:Jane Doty, painter and galleristWhether it’s on a large canvas, a small gesso board,
or a piece that incorporates scraps of torn paper,
Doty’s art emits a feeling and energy revealing her
passion to create. Doty says, “My style definitely
leans toward realism, but I do enjoy painting an
abstract every now and then.” A retired elementary
educator, Jane Doty is now a prolific artist working
out of her home-based studio in Durant, Iowa while
exhibiting her paintings in Sunrise Galleries and at a
number of area art fairs.
Michelle Servadio, nurse, activist, gardener and photographerThe ‘butterfly whisperer’, Shelly loves time spent in
her garden or along the banks of the Mississippi
River capturing nature’s beauty with her lens. From
her Central California roots to her home in Iowa,
she brings a unique point of view to her nature
photography.
Jim Elias, painter, photographer and gallerist“Where we are right now is really only home for
awhile,” says Jim Elais. He’s been presenting
landscapes in the form of paintings and
photographs for over 40 years. Each image
captures a simple element of God’s masterpiece as
seen through one man’s eye … to capture and share
a perspective on where ever home is. Elias studied
fine art photography as an undergraduate, worked
in the advertising industry for many years and
recently retired as college marketing &
entrepreneurship professor. He now manages
Sunrise Galleries and works out of the Muscatine
Gallery & Studio.
Janet Gillhouse, interior designer and seamstressDesigning costumes, theatrical sets, t-shirts and
commercial properties means Janet brings a special
perspective. Color, shape, texture and composition
are elements she knows are important to great
photography.
