  • 3AWARDS YEARBOOK 2015 ABOUT THE AWARDS

Every year, CEDIA members from across the EMEA region put their best projects forward with the aim of being recognised for their high quality system design, installation and integration.

This years scheme saw over 120 submissions from more than 17 countries, all competing for the top prizes in 2015. The battle to win a prestigious CEDIA Awards accolade has never been tougher.

Each installation category is judged by an expert panel drawn from the worlds of architecture, interiors, property, IT, smart home journalism and, of course, custom installation, to ensure the highest standards of scrutiny for each and every entry.

A first round of technical judging is complemented by a final rigorous assessment to determine the category winners. As well as the need to be integrated and beautifully concealed with the interior, important factors also considered include compliance

with industry best practice, the imaginative and appropriate design and use of technology, impeccably designed and installed racks, value for money as well as that all important wow factor.

Throughout the judging process, the identity of member companies taking part in the CEDIA Awards scheme remains completely anonymous to preserve the integrity of the adjudication process.

Over 400 guests joined CEDIA for a black tie event to celebrate the winners. The CEDIA Awards 2015 cer-emony is brought to you by the support of this years sponsors AMX, Artcoustic, ELAN, Indigo Distribution, Kaleidescape, LILIN, Origin Acoustics, Pulse Cinemas and Rako.

The CEDIA Awards is open only to CEDIA member companies. For more information on the scheme please visit www.cediaawards.org

Established in 2006, the prestigious CEDIA Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in home technology design, installation and integration across the EMEA region (the UK, Europe, Russia and the CIS, the Middle East, India, Pakistan and Africa)

    // PROJECT Highgate Media Room

// INSTALLER H&H Audio Visual Ltd

H&H Audio Visual Ltd was enlisted to deliver a multi-functional media room, which would incorporate a cinema experience, home office, and space for a coin collection, in the loft of a four storey Victorian townhouse. The clients main requirement was to be able to walk into the room, and at the touch of a button, turn the office space into a 5.1 cinema set up.

The installer overcame a number of challenges, including delivering the project within a tight budget and ticking all the boxes in terms of features and integration. Having the correct planning in place and a great understanding of these set ups,

H&H Audio Visual was able to shave time and money from the programming and installation cost.

Another challenge came at the design phase as the installer had to calculate the best orientation for the speakers in the unusual shape, which included the existing chimney stack and vaulted ceiling. H&H Audio Visual compensated for this by selecting an AV receiver with comprehensive acoustic adjustment features, such as Audyssey and Dynamic EQ.

By working closely with an interior designer to specify and design the joinery, H&H Audio Visual was able to allow for a millimetre perfect finish and for the system to be woven into the joinery aesthetically. The overall design is sympathetic to the rest of the house and is in keeping with the architecture of the building.

An ambitious and impressive media room, which not only delivered on the clients original brief, but surpassed their expectations on a strict budget.

    Cornflake

Cornflake had the task of transforming

a light and bright room, which included

two full height picture windows into

a calm, fresh, unimposing and casual

media room, which would provide a

family with space to relax, and enjoy

    movie nights.

Cornflake installed a 2.1 audio system

with a large wall-mounted TV, levelled

    between two aesthetically pleasing

Martin Logan speakers and a Velodyne

subwoofer, to cater for low end sound.

    Teamed with atmospheric lighting, soft

    furnishings and acoustically absorbent

fabric wallpaper, the difficult room has

become an unexpected hit with the

    entire family.

    The understated system highlights how

easy it can be to create a media room

that incorporates equipment in such a

way that it doesnt dominate the room,

or make it unusable for other activities.

  • Mood lighting systems recalling a pre-programmed scene at the touch of a button offer sophistication, ease of use and energy saving benefits. Rako can control all light sources, curtains and blinds, including dimming of LEDs. With seamless integration to home cinema, multi-room audio, security systems and holiday mode functions, the Smart Home dream becomes a reality.

Retrofittable wireless modules allow systems to be installed with minimal fuss and expanded later, while CAT5 wired options cater for the largest of projects. With wireless/wired bridging even combined systems are possible. Controlled from stylish wall-pads, hand-held remotes and iPhone/iPad apps, the user has the power of control.

    KIT LIST

The clients brief was to create a space, which would accommodate an 8 10 seater cinema, and a more relaxed family room. New Land Solutions three main objectives were to make sure that the viewing experience would be the same, no matter which seat you are sat in, that all equipment remains hidden and to a high standard, and finally, that the room is finished in the style of a super yacht, useable both in the day and evening.

New Land Solutions began by focussing on the disappearing seats, and in the end, has delivered an impressive and unique set up.

The deceptively simple space is focussed around a relaxing, half circle sofa and compact coffee table. With one press of the Savant

controlled touchscreen, the space magically transforms. The coffee table disappears into the floor, allowing the sofa to slide forward and over the now empty space.

From behind the sofa, five Fortress cinema chairs appear from beneath, thanks to a Future Automation automated lift mechanism. A large Screen Research projector screen descends down from a concealed ceiling slot in front of the sofa and a Runco projector silently slides into position behind a wall at the rear of the room. The blinds automatically descend to create a perfect movie viewing environment, eleven hidden speakers power on, driven by Procella amplification and a Datasat RS20 audio processor to complete a unique media room transformation.

    Kensington Audio Visual

    Kensington Audio Visual overcame

a big challenge on this project, by

creating a beautiful media room in

what is essentially a sun room. With

windows and glass doors on three

of the four walls, and the client not

wanting any disruption to the views

    and the relaxing environment, the

installer had to make sure that all

equipment was as hidden as possible,

and performed well, despite the various

    challenges this room presented.

Both the projector and screen were

fully recessed into the ceiling. At the

touch of a button on the Crestron

system, the projector and screen lower,

allowing the client to watch any video

source in the house, the curtains and

blinds close, and the lights dim to the

    preferred brightness. The surround

    sound system consists of directional

    in-ceiling speakers, which are perfectly

aligned to allow for a great experience.

    Philharmonic AV

The owners of a Victorian terrace

    house requested Philharmonic AV to

install a media room, which would

    accommodate the whole family. To

satisfy everyone, both audio and video

had to be exceptional. To deliver audio

that would achieve an immersive movie

    experience, as well as spine-tingling

musical escapism, the installer chose a

    5.1 Artcoustic surround sound system

    and an Arcam AVR.

    Philharmonic AV installed a Panasonic

60 plasma display, as it was the

last plasma model made, and is still

perceived to offer one of the best HD

images. The end result is not only a

system that operates beautifully on a

technical level, but also a dedicated

space in which the family can enjoy

    their favourite music and movies.

    Seven Integration

The brief for this project was a discreet,

    high performance media room that

would also double up as a guest

    bedroom an unusual request.

    The biggest challenge was the

installation of the rack. The depth of

the rack, and the request for it to be

hidden away, meant that it had to be

    located within the bed/wardrobe space.

A pull out Middle Atlantic rack was

specified and located at a height of 2.5

    metres. Seven Integration ensured that

    its location had adequate extraction

and ventilation connected to the main

    building system.

As the space was doubling up as a

guest room, Seven Integration also had

to ensure that the equipment remained

silent. To take care of this, the installer

fitted a Tripp Lite IP controlled PDU,

which enabled the client to easily

disable any equipment that emitted an

    audible noise.

Cinema Architects Vereeniging turned an unused space into

an area which now includes a cigar lounge and media room.

Due to there being a large window which the client didnt

want covered up, Cinema Architects Vereeniging installed an

automated electric screen, curtains and blinds, providing the

perfect spot for watching movies. Clever lighting was designed

for the room, to make it an informal setting when being

    enjoyed as a cigar lounge.

Beautiful dcor and modern sound, lighting and special effects

were the criteria for this disco room. En-Trade installed a large

video wall as the focal point in this room, while hiding most of

the other equipment out of sight, either at the DJ box, or in a

separate room. Colour changing lights, smoke machines, and

high quality audio have ensured this is a disco room like no

    other.

ing the Runco short throw projector

    In-ceiling speakers were provided by

B&W, while the 2.4m wide projector

    screen was from Screen Research.

Due to its acoustic transparency, the

    three in-wall speakers are hidden

    of the room, a 15 16.9 screen

and a Full HD LED projector. For

    the interior acoustical treatment,

    AV Solutions India covered 50%

of the floor with a thick carpet,

and supported this with a mix of

    absorbers, diffusers and reflective

    surfaces on the walls.

As per the clients hidden design

    brief, Cornflake built the speakers

into the infrastructure of the room,

    discreetly positioned for optimal

Front and side wall speakers were

painted to match both the colour

and texture of the bronze plaster. A

    full height acoustically transparent

speakers concealed to the rear, deliv-

ering a sleek and professional finish.

For this homeowner, a serious cinema connois-seur and movie enthusiast, expectations were high. Art Cinema | 3Logic was to provide a solution that was nothing less than flawless in terms of acoustics, sound and picture. In this new build property, the home cinema had to act as the centrepiece feature.

With this in mind, the home cinema experience is stretched across three rooms. The first is the entrance which perfectly conveys a traditional, Hollywood cinema ticket booth before moving into the lobby, a bar area where all equipment is concealed within the rack. The bar area is also a multi-room audio and visual zone, allowing the screening and sound from the cinema room to be previewed at all times so viewers never have to pause or miss a moment

when topping up on refreshments. Finally, and most importantly, acoustically treated doors from the bar lead to the impressive home cinema. This room, as requested in the brief, was treated acoustically, eliminating all acoustic imperfections, filling the room with absorbing panels. Bass traps are positioned in every corner and the floor and ceiling are covered with specially treated fabric.

Assuming the client will want to align the top-class home cinema with new technologies, Art Cinema | 3Logic ensured this room was future-ready in preparation for a 4K projector. Crestron control connects the cinema to the rest of the house, allowing for lighting, security, energy management and monitoring to be controlled from a dedicated user interface.

MACBEE Pvt. Ltds main goal for this cinema was to get it technically as close to reference level as possible. As the owner of a chain of multiplexes, the client was particular with his requests fit as many seats in as possible, and install the largest screen the room will allow.

MACBEE Pvt. Ltd was able to facilitate 15 seats in the room. With so many seats, the right lens and screen size were imperative.

The Vutec screen selected met the brief, with just one finger space left between the wall and the screen. Due to the Christie DCI projector being on the louder side, MACBEE Pvt. Archimedia provided a solution that

    meets the balance of performance

    vs budget. Having understood that

the cinema would often be used in

    non-blackout conditions, the installer

To ensure that the cinema would sound

great from every seat in the room,

Archimedia installed two rows of side

    surround speakers and four subwoofers

positioned on the 25% lines of the

A dedicated home cinema was designed and installed on the

third floor of a family home in Moscow. En-Trade had to consider

the acoustics as the client didnt want the noise escaping the

room. In order to eliminate noise in the rest of the house, a

reinforced concrete floor suspended on a thick layer of the

polyurethane foam was built in the hall. A Christie projector

provided optimum viewing in this room. All service functions

are operated via a Crestron CP3 processor, with Crestron DIN-

1DIMU4 lighting control units and DIN-2MC2 blind control units.

En-Trade was called upon to install a home cinema in the ground

floor of a country house. Due to double up as a gaming room,

the installer had to give careful consideration to the acoustics

of the room. All equipment was cleverly hidden away, even the

screen was hidden by curtains when not in use. Lighting on the

The combination of formal and informal settings was required in this new build project, and resulted in Lifestyle Technologies collaborating with an interior designer to provide the perfect blend of technology and design.

The first stage saw Lifestyle Technologies design a control system which included Lutron HomeWorks QS for lighting, Crestron thermostats for heating, and a Coolmaster interface for cooling.

The second stage was focussed on the entertainment element. Lifestyle Technologies provided 11 individual listening zones, including invisible speakers in the formal areas of the house and stylish environmental speakers

featured on the veranda and in the pool area, to allow for a party atmosphere. The same kind of thought was given to the lighting, and pre-sets were arranged for different areas in the house. An astronomic time clock system automatically adjusts the lighting and blinds for different times in the day.

In the basement, a Vivitek HD projector and a 92 motorised screen, Audica LCR soundbar, Cabasse satellite speakers and subwoofer provide the client with a cinematic experience, while a TV behind the projector screen provides more casual viewing.

The specified products, placement and installation all contributed to Lifestyle Technologies meeting the clients brief. Also, the strategic placement and sophisticated GUI programming was self-explanatory and only a few minutes of training was enough to bring the client up to speed with the system.

Crystal Technology had the tough job of installing a modern

the authenticity of its heritage. Working with a carpenter,

Crystal Technology was able to integrate speakers and Lutron

seeTouch keypads into 150 year wood cabinets.

The installer specified Lutron HomeWorks QS for the lighting and

a Savant AV system. The home cinema features a JVC Full HD

projector, a Savant HDBaseT receiver, 5.1 B&W in-wall speakers and

a 100 acoustically transparent screen from Screen Research.

Working closely with the interior designer, Finite Solutions

installed an unobtrusive home automation system. Lighting,

security, video distribution, and a data network was installed in

this family home. Music distribution, surround AVR, remotes and

iPad / iPhone control all came courtesy of URC Total Control.

Security was a key feature for the client, so Finite Solutions

Woelf was responsible for integrating the lighting, keypads, multi-room AV, heating, security, intercom and blind control. The

installer achieved all this, as well as automating the owners personal elevator. When he leaves the loft, the elevator automatically comes to the 5th floor and opens itself. In the kitchen, a moveable glass wall was installed behind the gas fire to hide devices such as the toaster and juicer. This was controlled via the automation system.

The entire building works with a SIP communication system. Woelf integrated the system into the automation platform to enable the client to use the multi-room speaker as a door bell. He is able to contact the concierge at ground level to open the doors to allow visitors in.

The end result is a property which is 100% fully integrated. Besides the normal solutions, Woelf has gone one step further, to achieve something truly unique for this client.

A beautifully integrated and exciting project, which incorporates AV, heating, lighting, security, blinds and most impressively, the integration of an elevator

    SONA

The brief for this new property was

for a large home technology system

    that wasnt over complicated. SONAs

    solution included a cable infrastructure

to provide low-voltage cabling to every

room, to support the systems that were

due to be installed, but to also prepare

    the property for future upgrades.

    Lighting control was provided via

    Lutron HomeWorks QS, including 200

    lighting circuits and colour change

control for the gym, wine store and

    swimming pool. SONA also utilised

    contact closures from the lighting

control system to control the vehicle

    gates and garage doors.

    Three entertainment areas were

created in the property one for

gaming, one for TV watching and the

    third for a cinema experience. A 55

display and projection system and 5.1

    in-ceiling speaker system created a

wow effect for the whole family.

    Perfect Integration

    Perfect Integration was requested

to deliver a fully integrated system

that would provide easy and intuitive

    control of lighting, HVAC, security

and AV systems, and that could be

    upgraded in the future.

A Crestron control and AV system was

selected to sit on top of the lighting

control and HVAC systems and to

provide a scalable option. A nice

feature on the system is the follow me

option in the master suite. A Crestron

PIR switches on the lights as you enter

and softly brings on the music or TV/

movie that was playing in the bedroom.

Each of the lower four floors are fitted

with a wall mounted Crestron touch

panel, providing control of the lighting

and AV systems in the room it is in,

and adjoining rooms, plus whole floor

    control of the HVAC system.

    While this property required lighting

control, blind and curtain control, a

    centralised AV distribution system, and

a media room, the main priority was to

hide the technology. For this reason,

SONA ensured that in all rooms, except

the media room, the televisions were

hidden when not in use, and discreet

    in-ceiling speakers were installed.

The system is cleverly set up to

    respond to the environment, by

    adapting the lighting scenes depending

on the time of day. iPads are the main

control interface in this property. The

single App is easy to use, and allows

the owner to control the lighting,

security, AV and much more from the

    iPad.

With the client requesting a fully integrated system that would

deliver entertainment and manage the building, Archimedia

opted to use Savant to integrate AV distribution, lighting,

window dressings, CCTV, security and HVAC control. The lighting

control system was specified according to the interior designers

load schedule and combines switching, phase dimming and

DALI interfaces. Archimedia installed Lutron keypads for lighting

and window dressing control, while iPads control other aspects

    in the property.

The core requirement behind this project was to be able

to create a technological infrastructure that can integrate

everything related to the home. Finite Solutions opted for a

Control4 home automation system. In addition to a HC800

whole home processor and HC250 HD room controller, Finite

Solutions provided four handheld remotes and three in-wall

touchscreens that offer easy access to the system, anywhere in

the house. Two iPads were also integrated into the solution to

give the home automation an even bigger boost in terms of ease

    of use and accessibility.
