New sculpture by Johannes von Stumm now adorns the ‘Wessex Plinth’ at Salisbury Museum

The Salisbury Museum is pleased to announce that a brand new work by Johannes von Stumm is the latest sculpture to grace its ‘Wessex Plinth’ at the front of the museum.

Johannes von Stumm is a sculptor who works in a most unusual and challenging way, by unifying stone, wood, metal and glass to form one sculpture. His critically acclaimed work has been exhibited both in the UK and abroad and is the result of years of hard work and experimentation. Johannes studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany and received his diploma in 1989.He became a fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2003 and was elected President of the Society from 2009 until 2012.

Johannes says of the piece created for Salisbury Museum, ‘It is an imposing figure, about 280 cm high. Looking at it I have associations with a guardian figure. The name ‘Goliath’ sprang to my mind, because it is a powerful, unapproachable figure. The head is made out of glass. I remembered the story of David and Goliath and this work is inspired by the story. The forehead of my ‘Goliath’ is made out of fragile glass. The imposing, powerful and unapproachable figure is vulnerable. My warrior ‘Goliath' stands in the Northern tradition, perhaps inspired by nearby Stonehenge and Avebury, in strong contrast to the white marble figure of David in Florence, created by Michelangelo.’

Communications Officer, Louise Tunnard says ‘Johannes’ work is immensely powerful. Goliath is made primarily from granite that Johannes found on a farm in the West Country. It bears the marks of its previous life alongside the vision that Johannes has for it. The fact that this new sculpture is rooted in the tradition of standing stones, beautifully reflects our archaeology collections, especially those relating to the landscape of Stonehenge.’ The plinth exhibition programme will feature work from Almuth Tebbenhoff, which will go on display at the beginning of June. Adrian Green, the museum’s Director says, ‘Our temporary exhibitions at the museum have primarily showcased historic art of national and international importance. Our ‘Wessex Plinth’ extends this

programme beyond the walls of the museum and will be an opportunity for us to work with living artists who can respond to our medieval building and our nationally important collections, either with existing pieces or new works of art.’

Johannes says ‘It’s the spiritual energy of a piece of art which counts, and nothing else.’ Goliath will be on display from 8 March, until 1 June 2018.
