Mission Statement:

4

Our primary aim is to be a leading provider of EFL in Ireland through the provision of a service of outstanding quality

and professionalism in a warm and friendly atmosphere

What’s New for 2016? CEC’s e-Learning Platform continues to grow in leaps and bounds. We have recently launched two new apps: The e-Learning Front Desk App allows students to access information on CEC events and information, to send e-Reception requests and to view our galleries. The e-Learning GeL: Aims Grammar App provides CEC students with over 2,500 pages of grammar forms, explanations and activities. Access to these apps is free for CEC students with their e-Learning username and password and they are available to download for both Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. CEC were delighted that 2014 marked the beginning of a brand new English plus Munster Rugby programme. This is a unique programme for non-native English speaking junior individual student and groups between the ages of 13-16 years old. Students have the opportunity to develop their English language and rugby skills with CEC’s tutors and Munster Rugby coaches over a two week programme. Due to the success of this programme, we will provide two dates in 2016! CEC are increasing the number of IELTS exams scheduled for 2016 due to the growing popularity of the IELTS exam and of CEC as an official IELTS testing centre in the South of Ireland. CEC is very glad to announce that we have even more exam preparation classes to facilitate the demand for IELTS and Cambridge Exams, as we are the only privately owned school in Cork where clients can both prepare for and sit the IELTS exam.

What’s New for 2016?

Afternoon Elective options As well as having 20 hours of classes each week from 09.00-13.20, students also have the option of adding an additional

8 hours of afternoon study by choosing one of our afternoon elective options. Our elective classes allow students to focus

on specific areas of English language in order to achieve their own personal goals.

In 2016 the following afternoon electives are available to students attending full time morning classes

The TOEIC preparation classes focus on development of business language and skills with an emphasis on vocabulary

and listening while also familiarizing students with TOEIC exam tasks. The Test of English for International

Communication (TOEIC) is accepted by multinational companies, corporations and government agencies as a measure

of the ability of non-native English-speaking people to use English in everyday work activities. Minimum level B1

The Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) is used to measure the ability of non-native English-speaking people

to implement English in everyday working situations. The test is suitable for learners at all levels, as it tests ability not

level. Classes improve learners’ knowledge of business and work related terms, develop learners’ business

communication skills and familiarise learners with the structure of the exam. Minimum Level B1

Classes focus on improving language and skills needed throughout the job application process from understanding job

advertisements and making an application to doing an interview. The course sessions also focus on the language of an

English speaking workplace focusing specifically on telephone and email etiquette and customer service skills in an

English speaking environment. Minimum Level B1

One-to-One classes give you the most rapid, relevant and effective form of language training as the trainer focuses

specifically on your language needs. Before your course starts, we ask you to complete a Needs Analysis Questionnaire.

This allows our trainers to design a course and choose materials that will meet your precise linguistic requirements.

Progress

Our qualified and experienced teachers use a variety of published and authentic materials to help students to progress as quickly as possible. Teachers and Academic management meet regularly to discuss each student’s progress. Each week the teachers hold a short meeting with each student, giving feedback and advice on how to improve. There is also a brief progress test each Friday. When a student is ready to move up to the next level, they will join their new class on Monday.

Methodology

The method of teaching used at CEC is the communicative approach. Our aim is to enable students to communicate more effectively in English both with native speakers and speakers of English from other countries. CEC’s courses include work on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Special emphasis is given to communicating effectively and accurately, and error-correction plays an important role in classes. All of our course levels are mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and have clear learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are what the students can do with the language. Students can see the learning outcomes for each week on the scheme of work in their classrooms and can discuss these with their teachers.

We ask students to arrive at our Adult Centre by 8.45am on their first day. There will be a brief welcome meeting with the Academic team and students receive important information about the school and their timetable. Students who have taken the online test are taken directly to class to meet their teachers. CEC’s classes follow the Council of Europe Com-mon European Framework for languages (CEFR) and we offer classes from A1 to C2.

Our School

CEC Junior Schools location

Douglas is a residential suburb of Cork City located about 2 km from the city centre. The area of Douglas has all of the amenities of Cork city without the problems of a city centre location. There are 2 very large shopping centres, cinema complex, travel agents, McDonalds, 3 golf course and horse-riding stables. A bus journey from the school to the city centre takes no more than 15 minutes.

Douglas Bishopstown

Our junior residential centre is located in the beautiful suburb of Bishopstown. This is a well established south-western residential suburb of Cork situated approximately 3km from the City centre . Bishopstown is student orientated with many primary and second level schools in the area as well as the third level Cork Institute of Technology where the sum-mer school is based. The Wilton shopping centre is perfect for shopping and there is also a local farm which provides beautiful walks for the public.

CEC has been arranging activity programmes for groups of teenagers for over 35 years with great success. The junior courses’ objective is to improve the students’ use and command of the English language, not just in the classroom, but through a wide variety of activities.

We are aware that the time spent by the student outside lessons and organised leisure activity time plays an equally important role in the overall language holiday experience. All of our activities are fully supervised by professional trainers and they are recognised by the Department of Education.

Please refer to the dedicated centre profiles for full information on each of our centres

Course Aim: On the Family Language Stay, all members of the family can enjoy English language classes while experiencing

Irish culture.

Course Description: The CEC family programme allows all members of a family to attend and enjoy our language pro-

grammes. The kids have a great opportunity to meet with juniors from other countries and experience other cultures while

learning English, and their parents have the freedom to take a course at our adult college, knowing that their child is safe

in our hands. It is not necessary for the entire family to do language courses; we also have excellent golfing and horse-

riding

programmes which may suit. Ireland is a beautiful setting for your family holiday and it is an excellent place to learn

61

For parents with very young children, there is the possiblility for the parents to share an intensive language course with one

parent taking a course in the mornings and the other taking a course in the afternoons. This allows one parent free to look

after the toddlers.

Cork English College offer a wide range of English

Language Courses for families. We can cater for

both adults and juniors at our centres. Our adult

school is located in the heart of Cork City.

Parents may attend any of our English Language Programmes and children may attend the following:

EL101 – Summer English Language & Multi Activity Programme €450 per week (no accommodation)

LS106 – Summer English Language & Horse-Riding Programme €520 per week (no accommodation)

ACCOMMODATION

Our apartments are new and modern apartments located in the centre of Cork

City. There is a direct bus from the apartments to the junior school and the

adult school is within walking distance. All apartments are fully fitted with all

bed linen, direct dial telephone, T.V., etc.

Cost

Two bed apartment : €590 per week

The centre is specially equipped for E.F.L. training and the

building itself has been purposely refurbished for the highest

standard of English language training in a pleasant, safe and

relaxing environment. Our junior school is located 2km from the

city centre on a direct bus route from your apartment.

The Junior Centre opening dates are from 27th June to 26th August 2016.

Family Language Stay Programme

Page 62: CEC Partner Manual 2016

CEC offers a high school programme for young learners who wish to improve their skills by attending a secondary

school in Ireland. This programme offers students the unique opportunity to experience the educational system in

Ireland while at the same time improving their own language ability. The programme is ideal for students who would

like to study at third level in an English-speaking country after finishing their secondary school education or who

intend to take up studies through the medium of English in their own country.

62

CEC works with a number of partner secondary schools in Cork City and suburbs. The partner schools we use have been

carefully selected based on their performance as educational institutes and on the excellent results which their

students consistently obtain in the final school-leaving examination. The percentage of students from these schools who

go on to study at third level institutes is very high, averaging 80 to 90% of school leavers from any one year.

CEC offers the programme in both day schools and boarding schools to young learners of a school-going age between 13

and 18 years. Most students attend 4th year, also called Transition Year, but we also offer places in other years. While on

this programme and attending a day school, students are placed with a longstanding host family.

Winter Mini-Stay Study Programme

Page 64: CEC Partner Manual 2016

64

Project-based Mini-Stay courses are aimed at secondary school students who are studying English in their home country and who wish to further improve their English, specifically their speaking skills, while also gaining an understanding of the

culture of an English speaking country.

Prior to arrival in Ireland, students are assigned or choose an appropriate topic area and work in small groups to research and prepare information on this topic concerning their own country. They also consider how things may be different in Ire-land. During the course in Cork English College, the students continue their research project researching their topic area in

Ireland.

Throughout the stay, students are encouraged to explore and consider the differences between life in their own country and life in Ireland by researching their topic area and preparing a mini-presentation for the end of the course in which they compare aspects of Irish life and culture with life in their home country. Throughout the course the lessons are topic-based, allowing the teacher to review major areas of vocabulary while also reviewing basic language points. The focus is on providing as much communication practice as possible, therefore listening and speaking are heavily emphasised. The Ministay programme uses task-based learning as the basis of lessons. These tasks encourage learners to negotiate and work together in English to achieve an appropriate outcome using the necessary language. Language useful for presentations, such as organising points and presenting facts and figures and trends clearly are also focussed on to help with the final presentation. Class content can be tailored to include topics and language areas of specific interest to the students in the

group.

Adult Terms & Conditions

66

The following is an outline of the terms and conditions for bookings and payments for Agents and representatives of Cork English College. The purpose of this list is to outline our conditions clearly and concisely and thereby avert misunderstandings. The Term “Agent” refers to any intermediary representing CEC. Any disputes relating to accounts or services provided will, where necessary, be heard in the courts in the Republic of Ireland where the bulk of the service is carried out. Enrolling on a Course Where possible we ask that Agents complete the CEC Registration Form. The CEC Registration Form requests information on personal details, course, level, arrival information, transfer details and accommodation details. We would ask that Agents complete this form, or assist their clients to do so. Booking and Paying for a Course Group bookings - a 20% deposit is requested at time of booking with the remaining balance due for payment 2 weeks prior to arrival. Individual Bookings - a deposit of €200 is required at time of booking with the remaining balance due for payment 2 weeks prior to arrival. CEC will then send Agents an e-mail, indicating the price of the course and accommodation and any additional services requested, with the commission already deducted. The total invoice will show the amount due. For some countries’ visa applications, full payment is required in advance before acceptance letters are issued. Payment Procedure Payment may be made by Bank Draft in €uro to the college address or by Credit Transfer in €uro directly to our bank: Bank of Ireland, Bridge Street, Cork, Ireland Account Name: Cork English College Limited Bank Code: 90-27-92 Account Number: 81959925 IBAN: IE92 BOFI 9027 9281 9599 25 SWIFT Code: BOFIIE2D [please add €15 to cover bank charges] Please note any invoices paid directly to CEC by credit card will be subject to a total credit card surcharge of 2% **Please ensure when making a payment to include the invoice number and student name or number** Commission Individual Bookings - Commission is paid in two ways: 1) Net invoice method 2) Retrospective Commission method. CEC invoice the Agent, who is paid the gross price by the client and then pays the net invoice fee to CEC. Commission is calculated on our Public Price List and is paid only on Tuition Fees for Adults and on our total package price for Juniors. Retrospective Commission Method Clients are invoiced for the gross amount and commission is paid on Adult Tuition Fees and Junior Package Price. Deposits must be paid for students booked by Agents on the retrospective method. The Agents details must be clearly marked on each booking at the time of booking for commission purposes.

Group Bookings - Special group rates are agreed with Agents by negotiation. It is important to note that should this group not reach the number agreed upon, this will automatically invalidate the fee agreed and a sliding scale will then apply. CEC will provide this sliding scale upon receiving a group booking. CEC requires a 20% deposit on each group booking. Bookings will not be confirmed until the deposit, has been received by CEC. It is important to note that deposits must be paid by the end of March 2016. Balance must be received 2 weeks prior to the groups arrival. Groups will be assigned to chosen centres on a first-come, deposit-paid basis. Failure to meet the terms outlined can lead to cancellation. CEC reserves the right to close bookings once we have reached our quota in each Centre. Arrivals Group quotes include one group transfer on arrival and one group transfer on departure. Regarding flights arriving between midnight and 6am or delayed flights, CEC reserves the right to hold students until 7am. Small groups or individual students booked as part of a group and arriving separately to the group will be charged a transfer fee. If groups are arriving and departing to/from their accommodation at unsociable hours due to flight arrival or departure times CEC reserves the right to charge a supplement fee to cover this. Pricing CEC requires Agents to submit their price lists. Misrepresentation It is the responsibility of Agents promoting CEC to give a true and accurate description of our programmes. Any such description must be submitted to the CEC Marketing Department before printing. CEC reserves the right to refuse bookings from an Agent who is misrepresenting our courses. Adult Groups Ireland - Accommodation is half-board from Monday to Friday and fullboard at the weekends. If full board accommodation is required from Monday to Friday, CEC can arrange this at an additional cost of €40 per person per week. CEC reserves the right to terminate the contract in the following circumstances:

The unruly behaviour of a student.

Vandalism by a student.

The committing of a criminal offence on the part of a student.

In circumstances where the accommodation and facilities offered by CEC are unsuitable to the special needs of a student.

In circumstances where the behaviour and conduct of a student is such as to adversely affect the proper administration of the School.

Where a medical condition needing special medicine and care is not advised on the Registration Form or when the booking is made.

Insurance Students are not insured by the School, or by the host family, against illness, theft or loss of personal effects. Therefore the school accepts no responsibility in the event of such occurrence. Personal insurance cover is highly recommended. Insurance should cover the loss of personal possessions such as laptops, cameras, and mobile phones as well as the loss of tuition fees if a student decides to cancel their course or return home early. CEC does not assume any liability for loss, delay or accident of any kind whatsoever which may occur due to the fault or negligence of any company, hotel proprietor, campus, hostel or any other persons carrying out ancillary arrangements.

Page 67: CEC Partner Manual 2016

Adult Terms & Conditions

67

Medical Insurance Medical Insurance can be arranged at a cost of €100 per annum. We advise all clients to take out full medical insurance prior to their arrival. CEC cannot be held responsible for medical costs incurred if a student does not specifically request medical insurance cover. Citizens of the European Union countries should bring the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with them. Adult Classes At peak times of the year, adult classes can take place at alternative premises other than our main teaching centres. Junior Groups (Winter) Where groups book mid-week to mid-week, it may not be possible to provide classes on the Monday and Tuesday of their last week. Additional tuition will be given in lieu of this during the afternoon period. Group Leaders Group Leaders will be supplied with a Group Leader Handbook, which outlines their duties. It is important that Group Leaders read this handbook carefully. Group Leaders are expected to attend the centre each day and to accompany their group on all social and cultural excursions and activities. Accommodation will be full-board in Cork. In the peak month of July it may not be possible to provide single room accommodation for Group Leaders. It is not feasible for a Group Leader with a group at a Junior suburban centre to attend an Adult / Teachers Course at the city centre Adult School. We advise all Group Leaders to bring a mobile phone with them and to give this number to the centre principal in case of emergency. The host family phone is there for students to contact the Group Leader. The phone can be used in emergency situations only. Phone Calls Students can only make emergency phone calls from the host family telephone under supervision. Agents will be responsible for recouping costs of calls made without permission. Text Books (Adults) Text books are not included in our fee and cost approximately €45. Book rental may be organised for groups only. Accommodation It is important that Agents make special requests (i.e. no pets, vegetarian, etc.) on their initial booking. It is too late to make these requests after students have been placed. Where a number of special requests are made for one student, CEC reserve the right to fulfil what we feel to be the most important request. Agents should advise CEC of any special dietary needs, such as lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance or coeliac. There will be an extra charge for students requesting a special diet of approximately €30. Smoking Smoking is not permitted in any public buildings in Ireland (schools, residences, etc.). It is not acceptable to smoke in a host family home. Public Holidays CEC will be closed on the following Public Holidays: 1st January, 17th March, 25th March, 28th March, 2nd May, 6th June, 1st August, 31st October, 16th December 2016 – 2nd January 2017.

When public holidays occur on a Monday, students will begin their course on a Tuesday. No extra classes will be arranged to make up group lessons missed on public holidays and there is no refund of fees or credit given. An activity is organised in lieu of classes. Please note there is no refund for clients who downgrade from Intensive to Standard Course during the first four weeks of their stay. After the first four weeks the fee can be refunded through the Agent at the discretion of a Director of CEC. Beginners arriving on dates other than the published start dates for beginners may have class in the afternoon, or at the lowest level operating at that time, or must take individual tuition. It may be necessary for absolute beginners to have one-to-one tuition until they reach a suitable level. Their group class fee will be offset against these charges.

Cancellation & cancellation fees All cancellations must be notified in writing. Bookings may be cancelled up to 2 weeks prior to commencement of the course without penalty (other than non-refundable deposit of €200). For cancellations received between 7 and 14 days before commencement of the course, 60% of the full amount will be refunded. For cancellations received between 1 and 7 days before commencement of the course, 30% of the full amount will be refunded. There is no refund for any cancellation once the course has commenced. This includes late arrival, early departures or missing days during the course. Book-ings are not transferable, i.e. they are specific to dates, courses and applicant. Students who temporarily leave their host family accommodation for one week or more during the course are charged a €75 per week retainer fee. At least one week’s notice is to be given. Where a visa has been refused, CEC will refund fees to the Agent on receipt of evidence of the visa refusal plus the refusal number. All fees which have been paid will be refunded less the deposit of €200. Where refunds are made by bank transfer, the bank charges will also be deducted from the balance. If the intended commencement date of an English Language Programme is delayed because of visa problems, CEC will not adjust your tuition or accommodation end date and no refund will be made. Curtailment There is no refund of fees for curtailment of a course after commencement. These terms also apply to students who are part of a group. The cancellation fees will be waived if there is a replacement student. Independent Course Selection Arrangements If, for any reason, students make their own arrangements for further study in Ireland, the contract between CEC and the student will be considered broken and no refund will be made. Expulsion No refund. General Conditions

CEC does not accept responsibility for costs incurred due to flight delays, (i.e. accommodation etc.)

CEC does not take responsibility for any loss or theft of belongings.

Students are expected to have appropriate medical and baggage insurance.

There is no refund of fees for days missed during the course, or for late arrival or early departure, or for public holidays.

There is a fee of €15 on all payments made by bank transfer.

CEC reserves the right to cancel all arrangements and bookings without prior notice if our payment conditions are not met. All operators working with CEC will be deemed to have agreed to these conditions without variation once they have made a booking. Social Media CEC reserves the right to expel any student found abusing or insulting any other CEC student, or homestay accommodation, on any form of social media. Legal Notice CEC reserve the right to alter and amend information contained in this handbook without notice. We reserve the right not to accept applications.
