//Why is it important to address multiple domains
when we create environments for our children?
NAEYC and Developmental Domains
1. Domains of children's development -- physical, social, emotional, and cognitive -- are closely related. Development in one domain influences and is influenced by development in other domains. Development in one domain can limit or facilitate development in others (Sroufe, Cooper, & DeHart 1992; Kostelnik, Soderman, & Whiren 1993). For example, when babies begin to crawl or walk, their ability to explore the world expands, and their mobility, in turn, affects their cognitive development. Likewise, children's language skill affects their ability to establish social relationships with adults and other children, just as their skill in social interaction can support or impede their language development. Because developmental domains are interrelated, educators should be aware of and use these interrelationships to organize children's learning experiences in ways that help children develop optimally in all areas and that make meaningful connections across domains.

Learning StylesVisual ◦ learn best by seeing or visualizing an activity◦ Highlighting, charts, lists, diagrams
Auditory◦ Need to hear what they learn◦ Listening, speaking, music
Kinesthetic◦ Learn best through touch and movement◦ Demonstration, simulation, role play, experimentation
Do you know what learning style(s) fit you best?Does it depend on what you are learning?
Our students’ learning styles
How can we identify our students’ learning styles?◦ Observations◦ have them complete a learning styles inventory
Why do we need to identify our students’ learning styles?◦ Know how they learn best◦ Group and individual instruction
Learning Styles and Young Children
http://www.catalogs.com/info/education/young-child-learning-style-assessment.html
1.Visual– What is one example of a visual activity with young children?
2.Auditory– What is one example of an auditory activity withyoung children?
3.Kinesthetic-tactile— What is one example of a kinesthetic-tactile activity with young children?
When children are taught in a way that uses as many of the learning styles as possible, they are more likely to understand and remember.
Let’ say you are going to read a book aloud to a group of 4 or 5 year olds. We will use The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Let’s explore how we can target different learning styles and promote learning in multiple domains.

Return in 3 minutes. 1.How is are learning styles addressed?2. How are domains addressed?
What to do with learning styles
Yes!
• Incorporate ALL learning styles into our lessons
No!
• Have our students ONLY use the learning style they are most comfortable with
How can you include all 3 learning styles into the following lessons?
• Learning letter sounds• Learning addition• Learning the days of the week• Learning to follow the rules of a game such as “Duck, Duck, Goose”
Weekly Reminders
• Complete reading• Post your answer to our discussion board question
and respond to several of your classmates’ posts• Attend seminar or complete Option 2• Complete Graded Review
This week’s discussion topic
Choose an activity that you would do with children between the ages of 3 and 6 in a classroom setting.
Explain which two developmental domains this activity addresses and how it addresses these domains. Discuss which learning style(s) the activity addresses and how.
When responding to your classmates, elaborate on which other developmental domains could be addressed with the activity or on how to add to the activity to address other domains and/or learning styles.
I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand.
