Alexander Campbell, the founder of the "Campbel-lites," since called the "Christ ian Church," was born in Ireland, 1788, and coming to Virginia, settled in West Virginia as a Baptist minister, but afterward, about 1841, changed his creed and founded a new sect. There was another Alexander Campbell, a Scotchman, who was born 1707, and coming to Virginia settled at Falmouth. Losing all his property during the Revolutionary War, he returned to Scotland, where he died. He had a son, Thomas, an eminent poet. Rev. Archibald Campbell, an Episcopal clergyman, was a brother of this Alexander. He had Washington, Lee and many others of the great patriots of the time as his parishioners. One of the brothers of Thomas, the poet, married a daughter of Patrick Henry. Another, Alexander A. Campbell, born in Amherst County, Virginia, 1789, became a Presbyterian minister. He moved to Alabama, where he preached as a missionary and also edited a paper at Jackson, Tenn., called the Protes tant .

These three Alexander Campbells have become much confused by the descendants of each.

The celebrated Dr. Charles Campbell, the historian of Virginia, born at Petersburg, Va., 1807, was a son of Rev. Archibald Campbell. John Campbell, a descendant of his, was one of the first to own lands and settle on the Rivanna river in Albemarle, and from him sprang the many Campbells in Central Virginia.

John McCleod Campbell, a descendant of Alexander Campbell, of Ireland, who disseminated the "Universali ty

of the Atonement" throughout Virginia, was deposed by the Baptist Church in 1831. The many descendants intermarried with some of the best families of Virginia; all of them did not hold to the doctrine of their great ancestor, and none call themselves "Campbell i tes," indeed, members of that denomination declare tha t Alexander Campbell did not promulgate a new faith, but tried to restore the primitive faith of the early church.

The widow of Alexander Campbell, the founder of the "Chris t ian" faith, was living not many years ago at the advanced age of 94 years at Bethany, W. Va.

In Burke's "Peerage" under the head of "Breadal-ban," will be found the full lineage of the Campbells of Scotland, time of James II to Sir John Campbell, 1681. His son, John 2d, was earl 1662, from whom the Campbells in America were descended.

Early Virginia land surveys were recorded as follows: 1738, May 9. Robert Campbell had a survey of

land in Augusta Co., Va.

1738, May 15, Pa t t Cambell had a survey of land in Augusta Co., Va.

In a list of soldiers in the Revolution compiled from their statements in possession of J. T. McAllister of Warm Springs, Va., are Col. Richard Campbell, Genl. William Campbell, Col. William Campbell, of Militia, Genl. William Campbell, Col. Archibald Campbell, Col. Campbell of Rifle Corps.

In 1742, in the Augusta Co., Va. Militia, were: James Campbell, in Capt . John McDowel's Co. Chas. Cambell, in Capt. John Christian's Co. James Cambell, in Capt. John Christian's Co. David Cambell, in Capt. John Wilson's Co. William Cambell, in Capt. John Wilson's Co. Gilbert Cambell, in Capt. John McDowel's Co. Hugh Cambell, in Capt. James Cathey's Co.

A C A M P B E L L O F 1776.

Colonel Samuel Campbell, an officer of the Revolution, was born in Londonderry, N. H., in 1738, and in 1745 removed with his father to Cherry Valley, N. Y., then a wilderness. In the French war his services were useful; he was a brave officer of the militia in the war of the Revolution, and fought in most of the actions on the frontier.

He was particularly distinguished at the batt le of Oriskany under General Herkimer. He was engaged also in November, 1778, in the conflict at Cherry Valley, N. Y., when the village was destroyed and many of the people massacred by the enemy under Butler and Brant. At this time his buildings were burnt, his personal property carried off, and his wife and all his children, but his eldest son, led into captivity. The captives were marched down the Sus-quehannah river to its junction with the Tioga; thence up tha t river, and to Geneva and Niagara; and thence to the neighborhood of Montreal.

At length, owing to the exertions of Gov. Clinton, Mrs. Campbell was exchanged for the wife of Col. Butler, and the children were with difficulty at the same time rescued from captivity. In 1783, when Gen. Washington and Gov. Clinton were on their exploring tour, they honored him with a visit for one night and commended warmly his patriotic zeal. After the war he was a member of the legislature and an earnest republican.

He died September 12, 1824, aged 86. So firm had been his health, tha t he was engaged in personal labor the day before he died. Among his numerous descendants were some of the chief citizens of Cherry Valley, N. Y. His character through life was irreproachable; and for many years he had been a consistent professor of religion.

T H E G I R L S O F B E T H L E H E M The Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies, at

Bethlehem, Penn., is one of the oldest female institutions of learning in this country. Since 1786, thousands of young ladies have attended the Bethlehem school. In the early days few of the pupils were Moravians, but were members of aristocratic and wealthy families, and for many years the seminary was quite the vogue. The following list of pupils, recently found, will prove of great genealogical interest.

Class 1789—Jemima Campbell, born 19 February, 1780,

daughter of John Campbell of New York. 1799—Jane Campbell, born 1 April, 1789, daughter of

Call Matthews of Plainfield, Conn., who enlisted 6 September, 1755, at Durham, married Catherine Campbell, daughter of Sir Archibald Alexander and Lady Mary Campbell of Scotland and Dublin, Ireland. Call Mat thews ' wife, Catherine, had a sister, Mary, who fell in love with someone to whom her parents were much opposed. She took all her jewels, inviting Catherine to go to London shopping where she married the man, embarking for America on her husband's vessel. Catherine, who was young and attached to her sister Mary, would not return to her home alone, and joined Mary on the vessel.

THE ARGYLE CAMPBELLS (Contributed)

Archibald Campbell, son of the earl of Argyle, was born in 159 8, and became known for his strong partiality to the covenanters, though he retained all his attachment to Charles I. by whom he was created a marquis. He opposed Cromwell's invasion of Scotland, and placed the crown on the head of Charles II. when his coronation took place at Scone in 1651. But notwithstanding his attachment to the king, and the display of an undaunted character in political life, he was seized in London when he came to congratulate Charles on his restoration, and upon being condemned as guilty of high treason was beheaded as a traitor at Edinburgh cross, 27 May, 1661. He wrote instructions to a son, and defences against the grand indictment of high treason.

Archibald, earl of Argyle, son of the preceding, distinguished himself so much by his bravery at the battle of Dunbar, and on other occasions, that Cromwell exempted him from the general pardon granted in 1654. In consequence of the interception of one of his letters, in which he spoke of the ingratitude of courts, he was tried before the parliament of Scotland, for leasing, making, or sowing dissentions between the king and the subject by false information. He was condemned to lose his head, and the sentence would have been executed had not the great Clarendon interfered with the king. Argyle was afterward restored to royal favor, and made privy counsellor, and one of the lords of the treasury, but he was afterwards again exposed to persecution, and most iniquitously condemned to suffer death. He escaped from confinement and after concealing himself in London, he went to Holland, and soon returned to Scotland, to support the rebellion of Monmouth. The plans which he pursued were not, however, well concerted, he was abandoned.by those who ought to have shared

George Campbell, D. D., was educated at St. Andrew's and was promoted to a small living in the Highlands. He was made professor of church history at St. Andrew's, 1728, and published a discourse on miracles, besides a vindication of the christian religion, and a treatise on moral virtue. He died in 1757, aged 61.

George Campbell, a Scotch divine, was born at Aberdeen. He was educated at the Marischal college, of which he became a principal in I 759, and professor of divinity in 1771. He died in 1796, aged 77, a little time after resigning his office. Among his works his translation of the four gospels are particularly entitled to commendation. His answer to Hume on the miracles was much admired.

H I S T O R I A N A N D B I O G R A P H E R John Campbell, LL. D., an eminent writer on biog

raphy, history and politics, was born at Edinburgh, 8 March, 1708. At the age of five he left Scotland for the neighborhood of Windsor, England, and he was placed as clerk to an attorney at the usual age, but the occupation was irksome to his feelings, and he relinquished it for the life of an author. In his 30th year he first appeared before the public in the military life of Prince Eugene and of Marlborough, in 2 vols. He published in 1739, the travels of Edward Brown, and the memoirs of Ripperda, and two years after the concise history of Spanish America. In 1742 the two first volumes of his history of English admirals appeared, to which two years after two volumes more were added, a work of great merit and established reputation.

Besides other popular publications he was engaged in the Biographia Britannica, which first appeared in weekly numbers in 1745, and to which he contributed some of the most interesting and best written articles. In 1750 he published his Present State of Europe, and afterwards was employed in the modern universal history which appeared in detached parts in 16 vols. His last work was "a political survey of Britain" in 2 vols., 1774, in which he displayed extraordinary labor, great judgment, and extensive knowledge.

He lived in the indulgence of his literary pursuits so retired that few had the happiness of his acquaintance, but those tha t visited him found him amiable in his manners, instructive in his conversation, and in his general conduct mild, humane, and religious. He was appointed in 1765 king's agent for the province of Georgia,

Rev. service with gen. data concerning him and his wife Elizabeth Wellen desired. His grandson, a man of ninety years, says William Campbell came to America at the age of ten, to Vermont, but he does not know from what state he enlisted, perhaps N. H., nor where he was married. He also says that a nephew, Thomas Flood, an army surgeon, bought William Campbell's farm, paying him Continental money, which he soon found to be worthless. In 1788 with his wife and children, Geo -ge, James, William, Wellen, Parmelia, Hannah and Sarah, he went west to what is now Cincinnati, later going to Jefferson Co., Indiana, where he died in November, 1821, at the age of ninety-nine years. His grave is on the farm patented under Thomas Jefferson and is marked simply, "Rev. Soldier." M. B. H.

What battles was he in? A brother Arthur was taken prisoner by the Indians and kept for several years on the Canadian lakes. This David,

Captain Whitaker Campbell, Sr., of King and Queen County, Va., was born about 1727, and died between 1812 and 1814, buried at the old Campbell place, near Bruington, King and Queen County. At this place are the sunken shapes of three graves, where are buried Captain Whitaker Campbell, Mary Catherine Purks and William Purks. Colonel Campbell married, first name of wife not known—perhaps, Throckmorton—and had seven children, which we will give first in the list of his children. Secondly, he married Mar tha de Shasure (Major Alfred R. Courtney, of Richmond, whose mother, Sally, was youngest daughter of this second marriage, says this name was sometimes spelled De Shazo). There were four children by this marriage. Captain Whitaker by his marriage had:

I. Whitaker Campbell, Jr., administrator of his father's estate, 1814-1818, married Sarah Smith Baytop, of Gloucester, Va., daughter of Thomas Baytop, born 1751, captain of artillery in Revolutionary War, and his wife, Sarah, daughter of George Booth, of Gloucester, Va. Issue, four children, among them Sarah Smith Baytop, as above.

I I . Mary (Polly) Campbell, married Benoin Cartlon, Sr., soldier in Revolutionary War, about sixteen years old in 1776. His Revolutionary War history from Washington states he applied for pension, and received it 14 September, 1832; was then down as son-in-law to Richard Rome (a second marriage probably). Enlisted at King and Queen, Va., St. Stephen's Parish.

I I I . Priscilla Campbell married Captain Robert Courtney, Sr., son of Philip Courtney. This Robert was uncle to t ha t Robert , who married Sally, the youngest child of Whitaker Campbell . The senior and junior was

IV. Jane Campbell married —Jones, father of Hill Jones of Caroline County, who married a daughter of Captain Robert Courtney, Sr., in 1819 (her first cousin). Hill Jones was father of Hon. A. C. Jones, of Arkansas.

V. Alexander Campbell, born about 1774; died about 1829; married three times. One wife was Sarah Courtney, born 1770, died 1827; another marriage was to Lucy L. Brown, 24 April, 1828. Alexander Campbell had a daughter, who was raised by her aunt , Mrs. Captain Robert Courtney, Sr., and married Colonel John Pollard, and so became the mother of Dr. John Pollard. Hon. H. R. Pollard, Sarah Jane, the wife of Rev. Dr. Alfred Bagby. (Judge James M. Jeffries comes in here somewhere).

T H E C A M P B E L L S I N T H E W A R (From a War Correspondent)

The gallantry of these men who wear the ta r tans of the old Scottish clans would seem wonderful if not habitual with them. Their first dash for Longueval was one of the finest exploits of the war. They were led forward by pipers, who went with them not only toward the German lines, bu t across them and into the thick of bat t le .

I t was to the tune of " T h e Campbells are Coming" tha t one regiment went forward, and tha t music was heard with terror beyond doubt by the German soldiers. Then the pipes screamed out the charge, the most awful music to be heard by men who have Highlanders against them, and with fixed bayonets and hand grenades they stormed the German trenches. Here and there many concealed machine-gun emplacements and dugouts were so strong t ha t no shell could smash them, some of them great vaults and concrete chambers of great depth, where many Germans could find cover. Bu t the Highlanders went down into them with great recklessness, two or three men flinging themselves into the vaults where their enemies were packed. I was told by one of their Colonels tha t in the bombing down the communication trenches they threw all caution to the wind, and while some of the men went along the trenches others ran along on top under a heavy

79

fire cheering their comrades on and then leaping down upon the enemy.

The Germans defended themselves with most stubborn courage and even at the point of the bayonet were still able to serve some machine guns at one point from which it had been found difficult to dislodge them. They were down in concrete emplacement from which they could send out a continual sput ter of bullets. Down the ruined way of what once was a street the Highlanders dug trenches across the village. The enemy attacked the village with progressive lines of heavy shells yard by yard, but by the best of luck his lines stopped short of where some ranks of Highlanders lying down in fours, were using frightful words to keep their spirits up.

The casualties were heavy among the other officers and men, but the Highlanders held on with wonderful spirit. It is this spirit which I saluted today with reverence when I met these men marching out of the fire zone. They brought their music with them, and the pipes of war were playing the Scottish love song, "I lo'e nae laddie but ane, an' he lo'es nae lassie but me." Their kilts were caked with mud, stained with blood and filth, but the men were beautiful, marching briskly with fine pride in their eyes. The officers and men of other regiments watched them pass, and saluted them as men who had fought with heroic courage, so t h a t the dirtiest of them there and the humblest was a fine gentleman and worthy of knighthood.

Many of them wore German helmets, and grinned beneath them. One brawny, young Scot had the cap of a German staff officer cocked over the ear. One machine gun section brought down two German machines besides their own. They were tired, but held their heads up, and the pipers who had been with them, blew out their bags bravely, though hard up for wind, and the Scottish love song was running out across the fields.
