Over the years, CES has morphed into the official start of the new year of IoT innovation, and CES 2019 promises to maintain the tradition with the launch of new products and services impacting all facets of connected life. In addition to its sheer magnitude (~180K attendees, ~4.4K exhibiting companies, 1K speakers) in 2019, the annual CES sets the tone and aligns the connected consumer product lineup for the next year and beyond. Growing continually since its start in 1967, CES 2019 is now spread over 11 official venues featuring 31 different product category exhibit areas.

Technological solutions addressing the five verticals of the IoTC (Smart Cities, Connected Vehicles, Con-nected Home, Wearables, and Connected Retail) are well represented within the CES exhibition areas, with specific “Marketplaces” dedicated to each and la-beled: Self-Driving Technology, LVCC, Platinum Lot; Smart Cities, Westgate, Pavilion and Paradise Center; Smart Home, The Sands, Level 2; Wearables, The Sands, Level 2; High-Tech Retailing, LVCC, South Hall.

One of the leading buzz topics is expected to be 5G, since IoTC member Verizon and AT&T both plan to in-troduce the service on Samsung mobile devices by June 2019 and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg and AT&T CEO John Donovan both are CES keynote speakers. While there will be numerous discussions and promotions of 5G at CES, the mass deployments of services (both for mobile devices and for connected home services) are not likely to hit their stride until into 2020, when transmitting and receiving devices start to scale.

A number of large, diversified tech brands will present a range of IoT approaches and devices, such as IoTC member LG Electronics (wearable robotic suits, ser-vice robots, Wi-Fi smart home appliances) and Bosch (autonomous vehicle software, motorcycle radar, secu-rity systems, kitchen projectors, robotic lawnmowers, voice-controlled heating systems).. At the other end of the spectrum, ~800 fledgling startups, most notably at Eureka Park at The Sands, will be featured under var-ious country banners, such as “France Pavilion” and “Taiwan Smart Retail,” or will be in standalone displays highlighting leading-edge innovations by founders with varying degrees of financial or major brand backing.

Voice technology continues its mainstream march, with eMarketer estimating that ~74M people in the U.S. will

use a smart speaker in 2019, even as voice is expanding well beyond the Amazon Echo and Google Home product lines. While voice in the form of creating Amazon Alexa skills was prevalent at CES 2018, expect a significant expansion of voice applications at CES 2019, including Amazon Alexa voice-enabled vacuums (Trifo), voice-con-trolled mirrors for skin care (HiMirror), smart kitchens controlled by Google Home and Amazon Alexa (Gourmia), voice-powered lighting control solutions (Leviton) and voice-controlled cockpits in vehicles (Rinspeed).

Various forms and degrees of artificial intelligence also are finding their way into products and services being demonstrated at CES, such as real-time language transla-tions for inter-office meetings (Zoi Meet), determining a vehicle driver’s mood (Emotion AI), manufacturing floors of the future (Omron), autonomous farming machines (John Deere), automotive radar (Metawave), skincare recommendations (IoTC member P&G), and personal fall detection (E-Vone).

No matter the connected category, CES 2019 likely has something for everyone and will undoubtedly highlight the innovations consumers can expect into the near future and beyond.
