TAKE A MULTI-LAYERED APPROACH TO ENTERPRISE DATA SECURITY
In the fast-paced world of securities and investments, investors’ tolerance for risk is at an all-time low, while government regulation is at an all-time high.
Capital market firms must safeguard their rapid-fire financial transactions to meet rigorous compliance requirements for greater client privacy, data retention and security. At the same time, they grapple with managing growing data spilling in from a variety of sources such as text messages and social media including Twitter, Facebook, Bloomberg chat, IceChat, CME Direct Messenger, Thomson Reuters Messenger, Cisco Jabber and others.
So much information is at risk for data leakage, security breaches, identity theft and cyber-attacks, yet traditionally short-staffed firms often view a data loss prevention (DLP) strategy as an afterthought — until something goes wrong.
“The new normal for the CIO is that fast is not fast enough. The same holds true for information security.”
Paul van Kessel, IT Risk and Assurance Services Global Leader, Ernst & Young

DON’T WAIT: CAPITALIZE ON DLP TECHNOLOGY NOW With a comprehensive DLP solution, capital market firms such as yours can proactively protect their proprietary information, clients and reputations, while eliminating the high costs and time losses from failed compliance audits. DLP technology can help you:
BOLSTER YOUR SECURITY PORTFOLIO• Command an airtight security
control environment with an update to your security protection programs that will meet stringent regulatory requirements.
• Augment current protective technology (including firewalls, encryption, intrusion detection and prevention systems) to limit data loss vulnerabilities without compromising speed and productivity.
MITIGATE RISK EARLY• Identify and secure highly
sensitive enterprise data to protect investors from risk and fraud, while providing greater data visibility to authorized parties.
• Monitor the flow of confidential data at rest, in motion and in use throughout the enterprise and accurately block unauthorized transmission.
• Prevent system downtime caused by looming cyber-security threats and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, in order to support a disaster recovery/business continuity strategy.
MASTER COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS• Address regulations established
by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Dodd-Frank Act, the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
• Ensure clear, accurate disclosure of financial and market-related information.
• Prevent suspension, regulatory penalties, criminal liability and reputation damage.

SOLUTION CATEGORIESDLP solutions fall into these three broad categories, with many combining features from one or more of the categories to provide a customized control environment.
Endpoint DLP systems. Reside at the host level; consist of software installed on end-user computing devices to monitor data while it’s in use or stored on the endpoint
Network-based DLP systems. Attached to the network perimeter; monitor data traffic as it enters or leaves the organization’s internal network
Storage-based DLP systems. Provide dedicated protection for data at rest

Q&A WITH KIRK CASKEYCDW Data Loss Prevention Engineer and Team Leader, CDW Malware Interception Team
Q: What key trends are driving capital market firms to invest in security IT solutions?A: Protecting the integrity of confidential customer data is an ever-evolving challenge. Cyber-criminal attacks have increased dramatically over the past five years, and we can expect that to continue. Also, capital market firms are increasing the speed of their transactions, regulations are tightening and managing data from a variety of sources is overwhelming.
Q: What technology or best practices do you advise that your clients use to ensure their data is fully protected? A: In addition to a DLP solution, we recommend encryption software, web proxies and a malware filtering solution to weed out legitimate emails from phishing and whaling emails, which represent about 80 percent of incoming emails. Also, firms should concentrate more actively on coworker education, because much of their data loss comes from within the organization.
Q: What do you anticipate as the next wave of technology for defending confidential data?A: Any new security technology will need to address the “bring your own device” (BYOD) movement. Personal devices employees bring in can contain malware, Trojans or command-and-control bots. Once connected to the network, such devices can cause serious issues. It will be important to install some endpoint encryption software and take proactive measures to protect the network.
Q: Is anything new developing at CDW to help your customers defend against increasing threats?A: We’re introducing a CDW Malware Interception Team. Our customers have always relied on us to help them solve challenging security issues. They know we don’t give up until we find the problem, provide a solution and prevent it from happening again. This new team will offer additional specialized resources to solve their security challenges.
5 KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF REGARDING DATA SECURITY
1 What types of data are you looking to protect?
2 What other kinds of security concerns beyond data loss keep you up at night?
3 What would happen if you didn’t solve your IT security problems?
4 Who would be most affected by the ramifications of a data security threat?
5 What types of security policies do you have in place right now, and how often are they updated?
