Greetings,
Across our campus, members of our University community are processing a long and divisive election season, and considering how to move forward individually and as a nation. I want to remind you, at CDU we are determined to continue our work and fight for social justice and health equity on behalf of the under-resourced and underserved populations. Therefore, we will not let external forces dampen our spirit or diminish our passion for community engagement and transformation. Indeed for a time like this, we summon the strength that lies within each of us and rekindle our passion and compassion for each other and the communities we serve.
This time of year brings fond memories for me, and perhaps it does for you too. Though we may be tempted to focus on difficulties and challenges we’ve faced, I understand how important it is that we choose to think about the many things we can be thankful for and ways to express gratitude. After all, Thanksgiving is the official season of gratitude.
Five years ago, the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City and the United Nations Foundation wondered how they could bring back the spirit of giving to the holiday season, so they created Giving Tuesday, a national day of giving focused solely on charitable giving. In 2012, CDU joined the movement and used Giving Tuesday to launch our annual Mission Maker Campaign. Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is held the first Tuesday in December. This year,
however, Giving Tuesday comes earlier than it is has in years past. It is today November 29th. Our Mission Maker Campaign for this year has begun. Since the University joined the Giving Tuesday movement, contributions to the Mission Maker Campaign on this single day have totaled $32,995. I want to thank everyone who has already contributed to the Mission Maker Campaign. I want to thank
everyone who plans to make a contribution and hope that you will do so today. Giving Tuesday will help to boost our fundraising efforts! Your donation to the Mission Maker Campaign is an investment in CDU now and in the future. Be sure to check out the rest of the newsletter for more information on Giving Tuesday and the 2016 Mission Maker Campaign.
I am grateful to be part of this community and wish you season’s greetings as we pause to reflect on our many reasons to be thankful.

NMF Awards Richard Morgan
Prestigious Award
College of Medicine student Richard Morgan won the National Medical Fellow-ships’ (NMF) oldest and most prestigious Franklin C. McLean Award established in 1968 in memory of the founder of NMF. Dr. McLean was an eminent physician who saw that the lack of opportunities for African-American physicians was a problem for our nation; that we needed more minority physicians to achieve basic equality of opportunity, and to ensure access to quality healthcare for millions of under-served and minority Americans. That’s why NMF was founded: the need was great then and it is even greater now. Since its inception NMF has provided scholarships to more than 30,000 aspiring physicians. This award is presented to a senior medical student in recognition of outstanding academic achievement, leader-ship, and community service. Congratulations, Richard, on receipt of the Franklin C. McLean award. You, too, can apply for 2017.
CDU Welcomes Enrollment Management Team Changes in Admissions Focus on Enrollment The Office of the Provost has announced changes to the way CDU recruits students. The new CDU Enrollment Management Division now includes the Office of Financial Aid and Office of Enrollment Management (formerly the Admissions Office). The Enrollment Management Division is under the leadership of Mr. Angelo Lioudakis, Executive Director. “Please be advised that our former Admissions Counselors have now been retitled as Enrollment Specialists with expanded responsibility for student recruitment and community engagement – functions that are critical to the achievement of our strategic enrollment goals,” wrote Provost Steve O. Michael. “We look forward to a more vibrant and result-oriented stu-dent recruitment and enrollment function for CDU.” The University is working hard to meet the President’s challenge to grow the University to 2,000 students within the next five years.
