Having to recognize the importance and the vitality of the Global Compact ten principles for the sustainable development of a business in this global arena, Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology held the Official roll out of the Global Compact ten principles on 5th May 2010 for its all employees, seconded employees and industry embeds under the leadership of Mr. Ravi Fernando. Viewed as the building blocks of reputation, these ten principles are of utmost importance as a smart tool in achieving competitive advan-tage over the other Nano solution providers as it helps the organization to differentiate itself and to build a good rapport amongst the global players.

As commented by Mr. Fernando, “The commitment of the CEO or the Senior Leadership per se will hold no effect on the commitment of the Organization for the same, unless all employees across the Organization are educated on the significance of the ten principles and its relevance to business in this competitive landscape”. Speaking on the topic of “the Global Agenda towards Sustainable Business and the SLINTEC Positioning” Mr. Fernando emphasized the global challenges in today’s’ World and the challenges and the

responsibilities that Business community have towards the societies, in which it operates. Further, the link between the Corporate Business Strategy of Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotech-nology, which differentiates itself as the Nano hub for Sustainable Nanotechnology, and the ten Universal Principles were explained with reference to the triple bottom line.

The comprehensive presentation on UNGC and Sustainable Business was presented to the audience with business relevance as an Organization aspiring to be the leading Research and Innovation platform for Sustainable Nanotechnology in Asia. This was followed by the speeches by Science Team Leaders, Prof. Ajith de Alwis and Prof. Veranja Karunaratne on “Making SLINTEC more Sustainable…key Initiatives” and “Benefits to SLINTEC from Science point of view” respectively.

Post awareness session, all employees handed over their Letters of Commitment to the CEO with explicit commitment to embrace and uphold the ten UN Global Compact Principles, which are evolved around a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption within their sphere of influence.
