Rabbi Reacts Some of the nicest brides and grooms and families I

know have had their wedding ceremonies in hotels. But, in my opinion, hotels are awful places for wedding ceremonies.

I'm not talking about the parties .after the ceremony. I'm no party mayvin. But I do know wedding ceremonies and how they reflect and even shape how we feel about our marriages.

So here's what's wrong with ceremonies in hotels and banquet halls, in ascending order of importance.

1. There is always too much noise coming from the next room or the kitchen. This is as true of the big hitters like the Four Seasons as it is of Holiday Inns. 2. Hotels and halls always take over the ceremony. Because it's their turf, the customer (you!) and the rabbi have little chance to control the photographer, the mikes or the atmosphere. Hotels don't understand the ceremony much less value it. They want to get it over with and get on quickly to their main event. In my experience even elegant hotels don't have tables the right size to use under a chuppa. And they couldn't care less. 3. Getting married in a hotel or hall is getting married in the most transient of places. Yesterday the Junior League used the space., tomorrow it's Kiwi Sales Motivational and you know the rest. Rabbi Reacts (continued) I am leading a two session discussion group in

December on Philip Roth in general and specifically his latest book Operation Shylock. The dates are Shabbat mornings December 3 and 10. We'll have a brief worship service (10:00-10:30 am) then discuss Roth till noon. You are welcome if a) you like Roth (no Rothophobes please); b) you have read at/east 3 of his 19 books; c) you have or will read Operation Shylock carefully and bring it with you; d) you will make a Tzedakah contribution of your choosing in honor of the experience. Call in to tell us you're coming and I'll send you Roth's new epilogue to Portnoy which we'll also discuss.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Calling creative graphic artists, craftpersons, amateur

video producers. BJBE needs: a) A new Omer counter, to mark the 49 days of the

Omer on the bima next spring. We will use the one judged best and display the others during the Omer-count. Small devices are acceptable for display, but the bima counter must be large enough to show the number to all in the sanctuary. Talk to me or Rabbi Memis regarding technical requirements before beginning to work.

b) A device or game or video which will help people . understand how the Jewish calendar balances the lunarsolar year. People with math minds understand explanations, but most of the rest of us need visuals. See me or Rabbi Memis for just what it is you will be teaching. All useable entries will win prizes.

held at BJBE on Wednesday evening, November 23rd. We need a good turn-out from the home team.

President's Corner Three recent events served to re.mind me of the acces

sibility of the Torah and the joy and excitement that comes when making it your own.

A couple of weeks ago I had the honor of sitting on the bima as a group of adults celebrated their B'nai Mitzvah. The glow on the faces of their families could have easily replaced the lights in our sanctuary that special evening. Here was a group of people who committed to their Judaism, sought even more meaning from their history and from the worship experience. · Thanks to the wise and gentle guidance of their teacher, Phyllis Steiner, they were able to enter the world of Jewish learning as adults, gain knowledge, and develop the skills required for reading Hebrew. Each seemed filled with awe as leaning over the unrolled Torah scroll, another link with those who have gone before was forged.

A few weeks later I shared another experience of students and Torah as our new religious school students were consecrated during Shabbat worship. This seemingly simple ceremony was, in truth, a powerful event. Following the children's recitation of the Shema with their classmates, each was given a private blessing by his or her parents, and a small Torah scroll was placed lovingly into little hands. Sensing the connection they were making for their child, more than one parents' eyes filled with tears at that sweet moment in the history of their family.

Three nights later my seven-year old granddaughter, Danielle, celebrated Simchat Torah with me at BJBE. She struggled as her second grade reading skills tried to keep pace with her drive to express· her Jewish literacy, and no matter how I assured her that God would hear every other word if that was the best she could do, Dani maintained her intense concentration as she decoded the English. Reading isn't easy for her, but Dani's positive attitude takes her above and beyond test scores in the public school and her love of Judaism makes her a sponge in religious school. As we paraded with the Torah that night, my step was made lighter by the look on the face of this child of my child who so strongly feels the tie to her people and to her Torah.

Torah scholars and sages provide us with interpretations, rabbis and teachers give us direction, but the Jews simply embrace the Torah, making it our own, individually and collectively, a part of a process, a continuation and a connection.

How exciting!

From the Early Childhood Center On a crisp Sunday afternoon in September, 62. moms,

dads, students, younger and older siblings, grandparents, and friends celebrated Sukkot together. We enjoyed sitting in our very own child-size sukkah with Rabbi Memis as she showed us how to shake the lulav and the etrog. We took family photos and created and then noshed on edible sukkot. It was a wonderful party!

I am pleased to announce that the Early Childhood Center is growing in class size and in class offerings. We are in need of used tricycles and "big wheels" to add to our collection of large motor equipment. If you have a riding toy you no longer need, please call me at the Temple office.

Shabbat Afternoon Torah Study (With a Difference)

The BJBE Ritual Committee and Sisterhood are cosponsoring a weekly Shabbat afternoon Torah Study group whicch began October 8th. Led by Kate Kinser, an experienced torah teacher and educator at BJBE, we meet at the Temple every Saturday from 3:00-5:00, ending with Havdalah.

And what's the difference? Our perspective will be "Women's Ways of Knowing Torah" as we study each book of the Bible, beginning with Genesis, looking again at familiar - and not-so-familiar - stories and text from a woman's point of view.

So do you need to be women to participate? Definitely not! This group is open to eueryone - men included. Expand your perspective and knowledge of Torah by joining us! To sign up, or for more information call Shelley Riskin (724-7418).

Mitzvah Day Ootober 1 e, 1884

Mitzvah Day On October 16, several hundred congregants gathered

at the Temple before fanning across the city and suburbs. Together we painted with the disabled, built with the homeless, fed the hungry, entertained the elderly, and played with homeless and abused children. On their behaH, I thank you.

Thanks also to the 45 volunteers that helped make Mitzvah Day possible. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and creativity made Mitzvah Day a success. You resolved to make this a Temple-wide event. You were successful. The event reached several hundred volunteers, and included the support of the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, youth group, Jr. Choir, Rhonda Wehner, the Mitzvah Corp, Confirmation Class, Religious Schools, Rabbis and the Board. Pretty impressive.

Congratulations on a job well done.

Our thanks go to Dodi and Ira Fleischman who donated the lovely new Torah crown in honor of Zelda Wise.

News From ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America)

Israel and the Reform Movement -What's Happening?

Slowly but surely, the stranglehold of the ultra-Orthodox over religious life in Isrsael is being loosened. A string of recent Israel Supreme Court decisions points unmistakably to incremental but obvious progress in the Reform battle to secure religious equality. In the last year alone, the High Court has issued historic decisions ensuring the right of nonOrthodox cemeteries and burials, and recognizing Reform conversions conducted abroad. There are also several petitions currently pending, asking for proportional f uncling for Reform institutions, including the Hebrew Union College rabbinical school. And now, a milestone ruling, submitted in January, has upheld the right of non-Orthodox Jews to sit on Israel's network of Religious Councils. The ruling invalidated decisions by the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem Municipal Councils to reject Reform and Conservative candidates.

Five Supreme Court Justices ruled unanimously that "banning candidates (from Religious Councils) because of their personal world view constitutes discrimination and contradicts the principle of equality. and therefore must be voided."

The Court's decision breaks the monopoly of the Orthodox on Religious Councils. Rabbi Uri Regev, director of the ARZA-sponsored Israel Religious Action Center, who filed the petition on behalf of the non-Orthodox candidates in the Tel Aviv Council said: "We are seeing a gradual collapse of the underlying principle that has governed Israel until this day, namely, that Judaism equals Orthodoxy. We will go to work right away and make sure that in all municipalities in the country, non-Orthodox candidates will be advanced.

Please consider becoming a member of ARZA. Membership in ARZA provides needed support to further the efforts of the Reform Movement in Israel. You make a difference by beginning or renewing your membership. For more information call the temple office or ARZA Chicago (312n82-1477, ext. 16).

for the 30th BJBE Adult Retreat at refurbished Olin-SangRuby Union Institute Bayit and Lodge, Friday-Sunday, January 20-22, 1995.

Interested -in Going to Israel? Information on a wide variety of programs of work,

study or travel in Israel for high school, college and graduate students and young adults is available from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. Federation also offers a limited number of partial scholarships based on financial need to help teenagers, college students and young adults meet the cost of participation in approved programs during mid-winter break, second semester, next summer or for the next academic years.

Scholarship applications are now available for programs beginning December 1994 through June 1995. The applications must be submitted by November 4, 1994. Spring scholarship applications, for programs beginning June 1995 through May 1996, will be available in January 1995.

Scholarship applicants must demonstrate financial need, live or attend school in the Chicago area, and participate in a formal program in Israel.

High school scholarships are available to students enrolled in grades 10, 11 or 12 as of September 1994. Scholarships for college students and young adults, funded by the Joseph A Hochberg Scholarship Fund and the Jewish Federation, are available to high school graduates ages 17 through 28.

For information about programs in Israel and scholarships or to request scholarship applications, contact Doris Wolin (312/444-2895).

The Holocaust Education Foundation The Holocaust Educational Foundation is inviting

Holocaust survivors -- anyone who survived WW II in concentration camps, in hiding, by whatever means -- to come forward and tell about the experience on video tape. The tapes go directly to the Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University, where they are made available to scholars, teachers and students of history, who will then be able to pass on what they learn to future generations. The plan is for the tapes to be housed ultimately at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Each person interviewed receives his own tape.

The years are going by, and the period when people who went through and survived the ordeal can bear witness is growing shorter. It is important for them and for those who follow that they be heard.

If you are a survivor and are willing to participate in this urgent task, please get in touch with us. If you know of any survivors, please tell them of our activity and ask them to get in touch.

Call Gitta Fajerstein Walchirk of the Holocaust Educational Foundation (251-5461).

Future Scholar Weekends Include Debbie Friedman and Mark Washofsky On February 24-26, we will learn from Dr. Mark

Washofsky,. professor of Talmud and rabbinic literature at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. This program is sponsored by BJBE and Congregation Beth Shalom.

On the weekend of March 24-25, we will host the one and only Debbie Friedman who will present her music at our Shabbat Service and lead us in a Havdala service of healing on Saturday, followed by an old-fashioned kumsitzsing.

These special programs are funded by the generosity of those who contribute to BJBE as Shomrim givers. We urge you to consider becoming one of the Shomrim.
