April 2015 Abstract Background: Booker T Washington decades ago launched a war on poverty before other pioneers including Leon Sullivan established the Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC) of American in 1964. The fact is that Booker T. Washington had realized even in the 1800s, that health inequities and disparities were greatest among African Americans. This poster will map Washington’s legacy that influenced research done by George Washington Carver as they both engaged in the “Movable School” concept, to improve minority health and reduce health disparities, inclusive of poverty. In his accomplishments, he utilized various means such as training and equipping minority populations and preparing them for self-employment and capacity development, through efforts aimed at overcoming health obstacles linked to racial or ethnic groups, socioeconomic states, gender, age, education and other characteristics. The poster further emphasizes how Washington’s work was of importance to social determinants that are often influenced by where people were born, raised, worked, and the systems to which they were exposed. Methods: A literature review of the achievements of Booker T. Washington and the contributions of his legacy even to modern-day practices will be utilized in the analysis. Literature Review:
