Saludares Contributors Susan Carreon Katherine Masaganda Ching Reburiano On March 8, 2011, we had our 2nd annual CCU Skills Day. The skills day doesn’t only target the novice nurses, it also attracts nurses that have been in the CCU for some time to update their knowledge and refresh their skills. The morning started off with a delicious breakfast provided by our PCD Cecilia Ma. There were 4 main topics discussed: Therapeutic Hypothermia, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump, Central Lines / Pacemakers, and ECMO. The Therapeutic Hypothermia station was covered by Miriam Donio. The insightful power point presentation was presented at the Nursing Grand Rounds last February. The Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump station was covered by M i r i a m Candaroma. She talked about the fact that IABP is a cardiac assist device designed to increase coronary perfusion and decrease myocardial oxygen consumption. She reminded us NOT to panic when receiving a patient on IABP, instead to stay calm and remember how to start up the device, assess the patient, and how to interpret the waveforms. The central lines and pacemaker station was covered by our nurse educator Audrey Graham-O’Gilvie. She discussed Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection and she reminded all of us that the maintenance of central lines should ALWAYS be meticulous and properly managed. We demonstrated proper changing of central line dressing and reviewed proper documentation. She also talked about pacemakers and the importance of consistently assessing the pacemaker settings and battery life. Our nurses are so lucky to be given the opportunity to expand our knowledge and sharpen our skills within the comforts of our own unit. It was a very productive and successful day. We are all looking forward to the next CCU skills day. April 2011 - Vol.1 Issue 2 Nursing Fellowship in Quality & Patient Safety By Ian N.
