Case Study Project: Island Venture Location: Inner/Outer Hebrides, Scotland There are a collection of Islands off the West coast of Scotland, UK, known collectively as the Hebrides. The main ones of our concern are: Lewis, North Uist, Skye, Mull, Jura and Islay. They are all populated but only have low numbers of pupils of school age (5 – 16yrs). As such, the islanders travel to a central school on the island on which they live to study in purpose built schools as can be seen in the appendices (to simplify the design, all schools on all islands are identical). There is a main Admin centre on the Scottish mainland, in a town called Oban. Appendix 1 shows the geography of the islands; Appendix 2 the floor plan of the schools; Appendix 3 shows the layout of the central admin office on the mainland in Oban. The pupils attend the school daily, however during the winter months the ferries that connect the islands may not run due to rough seas so taking examinations or visiting the mainland for extra library services etc. becomes an issue. Normally after compulsory education, those wanting to study at a higher level attend another educational establishment on the mainland. During the evening the school is open as a community centre for adult education/societies. Due to the inclement weather conditions in the winter if an older student is unable to return to the mainland, they should be able to access lectures at their University remotely from one of the local schools. All the students’ records are stored centrally on a MIS system at Oban and all sites connect via a secure Web connection. User accounts to logon to the network are administered locally. You do NOT need to improve the current PC hardware or Servers at any site, assume that the current PC’s have a wireless NIC installed. You have been asked to investigate the current setup, that is a hub based network using a dial-up connection to Oban, install a wireless network as per the diagrams in Appendix 2 (the diagrams in Appendix 2 show +wireless, this means wireless is need there, currently not deployed), propose a financially viable upgrade path (LAN and WAN) to increase response times. Additionally, look at providing a VoIP provision for staff to communicate with the central office at Oban. You need to produce the following in the form of a management report. Task 1 – 30% A design for the LAN’s, with an explanation of your design and approximate costs. Task 2 – 30% A diagram showing how you plan to link the sites together (WAN), a justification of the approach taken and the costs involved. Task 3 – 30% A financial justification of the new network infrastructure and investigation into the use of VoIP for the 13 staff at each site, each of whom makes approximately 10 minutes of calls each per day. Assume a 5 day week, and they are in school for 36 weeks per year. Within this task

you also need to comment on the RoI (Return on Investment) and the benefits that the sites will gain from you design Task 4 – 10% A summary of the proposal, also you need to submit the report in a professional management style with academically sound references (i.e. not Wikipedia).
