Focus attention on your qualications and
accomplishments and demonstrate why you are a
good candidate or the position
Obtainaninterview.
Resumes vary in content as well as ormat It is important
to remember that a resume is a personally written
document that allows or individual creativity It should
present a positive image to the potential employer By
positioning the most important inormation about your
experiences and qualications rst, and devoting the most
space to them, you highlight your strengths The ollowing
suggestions are provided to assist you in drating your
resume Although the names o the categories may vary
the ollowing inormation should be included
C
1. Contact inormation:Name, present and/or permanent
addresses, telephone number(s) where you can be
reached or a message can be let, e-mail address and
Web page i you have one and want an employer to
view it
2. Objective: A brie statement indicating what you want
to do It is a critical part o your resume; everything
that you do should support the objective I you have
more than one objective you may want to tailor
separate resumes to t each one Although some
employers do not place importance on the objective,
many do An objective indicates that you have thought
about what you want to do, that you have some idea o
what youre getting into, and that you have some
direction or goal You can customize your objective by
including inormation about strengths, skills and
industry or organization type This will demonstrate
that you know something about the position and
organization to which you are applying
3. Education: List institutions where you have complet
(or will soon complete) some level o education,

advisable to include more than one Experienc

I you have had many jobs, choose the ones that are mo
relevant to the position you seek Remember that resum
descriptions are ragments, not complete sentences Try
start each sentence with an action verb (see page 9) and
not use personal pronouns such as I or my Wh
writing your descriptions do not simply list the tasks y

The electronic processing o inormation has aected the
way you need to prepare your resume Your resume must
be able to be read by computers as well as by humans
Many employers use optical scanners to enter resumes
into computer databases and then electronically search
or candidates using identied criteria Dont assume that
your target employers are too small or dont have the
budget to use computer scanners
All resumes should ollow the same basic principals to be

readers toothe more simple, the better
1 Length depends on your experience and qualications
Generally, resumes should not exceed two pages For
most college graduates with a bachelors degree a on

2 Make your resume easy to read and ollow It shou
read more like an outline than a narrative
3 Place your contact inormation, in bold letters, at ttop o your resume I your resume is two pages, y
need only include your name on the top o the secon

Dear Dr. Anderson:
While researching possible employers in the eld of microbiology I became aware of your
company. I will be completing my Bachelors of Science in Microbiology in May and would
like to inquire about the possibility of employment as a Research Technician at Biosciences
Corp.
As you will see in my enclosed resume I am currently working as an undergraduate Research
Assistant at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus in the Microbiology Department.
The research I am assisting with focuses on the growth and characteristics of microscopic
organism bacteria. My assistantship has afrmed my interest in bacterial research andprovided me with the opportunity to hone my laboratory and analytical skills. In addition, I
have taken several elective courses to further enhance my knowledge and abilities within the
eld of microbiological research. I believe my research experience combined with my class
room knowledge has provided me with an excellent foundation for employment in your lab.
Also, I have participated in several activities and jobs that have strengthened my
communication, leadership and teamwork skills. For example, last fall I was elected as chair
of the publicity committee for the student chapter of the American Institute of Biological
Sciences. In this position I managed two other students, recruited speakers for monthly
meetings, and coordinated advertising activities across the University of Minnesota-Twin
Cities campus. These group activities reinforced my desire to work as part of team.
I would like to thank you for your time and consideration of my qualications. If you have anyfurther questions about my abilities please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at

The job search is much more than resumes and interviews
He or she who gets hired is not necessarily the one who
can do the job best; but, the one who knows the most
about how to get hired (Lathrop, 1977) In this article wewill share with you inormation known to increase your
job and internship search success
How many weeks or months do you think it takes most
students to nd a job or internship? Expect your job search
to take at least three to six months Start early and plan to
enact a smart and targeted job search
Many employers search or employees dierently rom
how job hunters search or jobs While employers search

comortable submitting resumes and answering ads rom adistance When hunting or a job, think like an employer
use reerrals and inside contacts whenever possible
Some job hunting methods are more eective than others
and some are very ineective The least eective ways o
searching or a job are those that dont involve person-to-
person contactusing the Internet, mailing resumes at
random, ads, and agencies
The best ways to search or a job or internship are to, rst,
identiy and contact employers in your eld o interest
using the yellow pages or similar resources Second, knock
on the door o employers that interest you, whether they
have a known job opening or not Ater researching about
an organization on your own, schedule an appointment to
meet with an employer to gather inormation tailored to
your specic career and company questions This process
is called inormational interviewing Finally, ask or leads
rom riends and amily Let the people you know, know
youre looking or a job Even i they arent aware o any
immediate job or internship openings, they may be able to
connect you to someone who does or think o you down
the road when they hear o an opening
The most eective approach, however, is to use more than
one method to nd a job or internship Research shows
that using up to our job search methods will urther
increase your likelihood o success in nding a position
(Bolles, 2007)
Also, did you know that the majority o jobs are obtained
through inormal networks? Theyre acquired through
riends o riends, being in the right place at the right time,

Experts tell us that Most job-hunters who ail to nd th

the job market, but because they lack inormation abo

job or internship search, be sure youve answered t
ollowing questions:
WhatskillsdoImostenjoyusing?
WhatdoIvalueinajoborinternship?
Whatworkareasinterestme?
Such sel-refection will help you clariy and set your goa
and help you articulate them to the proessionals y

internship search
Start by identiying a specic job or internship targ
Many people dont have a clear target when they beg

Next, research possible employers What do you kno

Who are the leaders? Check out proessional associatio

Once you have targeted and researched an employer,
you may have additional questions Now is a great time
to schedule an inormational interview with a company

these questions
The purpose o an inormational interview is to gather
career inormation, gain insider tips about getting jobs or

job search
Ask or a 2030 minute meeting and get directions I they
are not able to meet in person, try to schedule a telephone
