The healthcare industry continues to explode, offering some of the market’s most challenging and rewarding careers. More than 30 years ago, KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education offered its first healthcare program. Over the years the program has grown significantly – mirroring that of the industry. The College currently offers 12 classroom-based professional certificate courses which represents more than 20% of its total offerings. Additionally, the College provides more than 25 online-based programs – with a combination of online career training certificates and 6-week instructor-led courses. “Our healthcare programs provide a tremendous avenue to enhance one’s knowledge and expertise in the field,” said Andrea Cochran, program director. “These courses have helped students start a new career, change careers or advance in their current position. Many of them also serve as preparation for specific certification exams.” Nearly 40 instructors are employed to teach the 12 classroom-based professional certificate programs. Instructors are full-time experts in their respective fields and bring real-world, practical experience to share with the students. They represent hospitals such as WellStar, Northside, Piedmont, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as well as pharmacies at Publix, CVS and WellStar. Impressively, graduates boast a 94% national certification exam pass rate, surpassing the national average of 73% and the Georgia mark of 64%. Classroom-Based Programs:

As one of the fastest growing employment fields, healthcare was recently cited by the AJC as one of Georgia’s hottest jobs – growing by 17% since 2009. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics named healthcare as the largest industry showing the highest amount of growth of any other field – projected to add 3 million more jobs by 2016. As a result, KSU works closely with the Department of Labor to offer the most relevant courses possible. The well-established program

attracts a multitude of healthcare employers seeking quality candidates. The College routinely recommends students to companies looking to fill an immediate need. KSU’s Pedorthist program is the only one of its kind in Georgia and one of only four in the country. Recently introduced programs include Medical Assisting, Health Coach and Group Fitness Instructor. The College also offers a TEAS Exam Preparation course for aspiring nurses. The Medical Assisting program concludes with a 2-month, 180-hour externship generally in a medical office or urgent care environment giving students an invaluable, real-life experience. Practical training is performed in capturing vital signs and measurements, venipuncture, laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, and assisting with examinations and procedures. The College’s partnership with WellStar Health System and Piedmont Healthcare assists students with externship placement opportunities.

CALCULATED CHOICES Payroll professional makes it count with

enhanced knowledge of industry

When you work for one of the world’s largest payroll providers, it’s more than just a numbers game. Just ask Natalia M. Higgins, whose role as a client account executive and passion for her field spurred her to enroll in PayTrain® Fundamentals. “I felt that I was at a point in my career to learn the fundamentals of payroll,” she said. “It was important for me to have a better understanding of payroll practices in order to better support my clients and business unit.” Her employer, ADP, is the world’s largest provider of business outsourcing and human capital management solutions. Natalia is responsible for building and maintaining strategic client relationships with ADP’s Vantage HCM product offerings. She said, “Payroll, time [and attendance], HR and benefits are integrated in a cloud-based solution. Our goal is for organizations to simplify their business challenges and drive performance with tangible outcomes and by leveraging our insightful expertise.” “Significant” and “eye-opening” is how she describes the impact of PayTrain® Fundamentals. She said, “While one key goal of most organizations is to pay their employees timely and accurately, there is so

much that happens behind the scenes. The course has given me a better understanding of the entire payroll administration, and I will be able to better understand and respond to my clients’ payroll needs with the knowledge I have attained.” PayTrain® Fundamentals, along with PayTrain® Mastery, comprise the Payroll Professional Certificate program. Jennifer Henderson, KSU program manager, said, “In addition to in-depth training and knowledge our students gain from these courses, preparation for the Fundamental Payroll Certification and Certified Payroll Professional exams is another advantage of this program. To date, we have a 100% certification exam pass rate.” Natalia’s success on her FPC exam led to a promotion. The PayTrain® Fundamentals and Mastery courses explore payroll concepts, accounting, recordkeeping, administration and more. “The instructor is well-versed in payroll and has extensive years of experience,” Higgins said. “The chapter lectures, quizzes, resources and online practice tests are the right tools to be successful in the course and when taking the American Payroll Association FPC exam.” In addition to her drive, Higgins’ education at KSU has also played an important role in her career success. Along with the FPC, she has a B.S. in Organizational Communication (2006), Professional in Human Resources certification (2009), and Executive MBA (2014). Higgins said, “I know the importance of having these credentials for my career as I grow in the Human Capital Management Industry.” Natalia recommends this course for payroll professionals, regardless of experience. “There is always new information to learn. The class moves at a good pace and the tools and resources are very valuable,” she said. “If they are interested in developing themselves for career growth, the PayTrain® program is the way to go.”

KSU certificate serves as springboard to new adventure for graduate

Earning a professional certificate can create many new opportunities. For TESOL graduate Morgan Attaway, it first helped her land a job teaching English in Atlanta. It also provided her the skills to develop a curriculum for a new Training for International Educators program at KSU, which led to a trip to Israel. She then embarked on her next great adventure — the Japanese Teaching & Exchange (JET) Program at her new home base of Obama City, Japan. “It feels like I have lived here for years, while at the same time it seems like only yesterday I stepped off the plane in Tokyo,” Attaway said. “This fresh off the boat feeling is at its strongest when I am in the midst of giving what is called in Japanese the jiko shokai — better known as a self-introduction.” Attaway’s first week in the classroom consisted solely of jiko shokai delivered to 11 different Japanese high school classes of varying English ability. Not only was she sharing her life story 11 times but she was doing so by being genki (happy, positive, energetic) for every delivery. “You quickly come to realize what works and what doesn’t,” she said. “In my position, the jiko shokai are expected by my school, but you might be given the option of whether or not you would like to do one,” Attaway said. “I say do what feels right for the class. If you have some extra time, even just a few minutes, it can make all the difference in the world to help your students get to know you more as a person than just as an intimidating English machine. Attaway has proven what continuing education, passion and desire can lead to. Are you the next Morgan Attaway?
