DOCSIS

• International telecommunications

standard that permits the addition of

high-bandwidth data transfer to an

existing cable TV system

• CMTS (Cable Modem Termination

System, like DSLAM) and CM (Cable

Modem) are the main components of

the system

• CMTS -> ISP , CM -> Customer side


xDSL

• Family of technologies that are used to

transmit digital data over telephone lines

• ADSL -> Asymmetric , SDSL -> Symetric

• Provides communication up to 5.5

kilometers

• DSLAM and modem are the main

components of the system

• DSLAM -> ISP , Modem -> Customer


xDSL CONNECTION

• DSLAM and modem are the main components of the system

• DSLAM combines individual DSL connections from users into

one high-capacity link to an ISP (May place in ISP building,

on a street or in the apartment)


SPLITTER

• Used for seperating voice and data signals in DSL


WIRELESS BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES

• Wi-Fi

• Wi-MAX : Can provide coverage to an

area as large as 3,000 square miles

• Cellular ( 3G, 4G, LTE) : Mobile

connection

• Satellite : Expensive solution


3.2 PPPoE


PPPoE Overview

• Network protocol for encapsulating PPP

frames inside Ethernet frames

• Solution for tunneling packets over the

DSL connection to the ISP's IP network,

and from there to the rest of the Internet

• Typical use of PPPoE involves leveraging

the PPP facilities for authenticating the

user with PAP or CHAP
