Sixteen teams will begin the road to the 2010 Tim Horton Brier national championship as they compete for one of four entries in this year’s B.C. finals. Teams that are competing in the coastal playdowns earned their spots in various qualifying events in December. Among the rinks that will be playing in Port Alberni are former Canadian and world champion (2000) Greg McAulay of Richmond along with former provincial title holder Jay Peachey of the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster. McAulay and Peachey, along with the Brian Miki and Jason Montgomery rinks all competed in last year’s provincial championships and are looking to build on that experience. Waatainen, of Nanaimo, is another team with provincial experience, having earned a berth in the 2008 provincials. That was the year that Waatainen and rival Jeff MacPheat amalgamated teams instead of competing against each other. This year he comes to the coastals with third Dave Shortill, second Jeff Pilon and lead Keith Clarke. McAulay, a perpetual presence at the provincials in the past decade, has some extra incentive to do well at the coastals: his two daughters recently competed in the B.C. junior championships held at Juan de Fuca Curling Club. “They had a good experience at their provincials and now I need to get to mine,” he told a Vancouver newspaper this week. McAulay’s second, Dean Joanisse, is a former Canadian junior champion and has also skipped his own team in the national Brier, in 2001 and 2007. McAulay’s foursome attended the Olympic pre-trials event in Prince George in November but didn’t win a berth. Epp has been to the provincials five times, and can’t recall how many times to the coastals. He brings an experienced team with him: third Blair Cusack just qualified for the senior men’s provincials with his seniors’ team, and Jim York has also played in the coastals before. This will be lead Brad Kocurek’s first coastal playdowns. Epp said his team is feeling confident going into the weekend. “Everyone’s got a good attitude going in,” he said Wednesday.
