A Faculty Expedition to Colombia
1
“Colombia was once associated with cocaine trafficking and powerful drug lords, but today's reality is different: It's stable, a magnet for foreign investment and diplomatically engaged...Increasingly, Colombia is seen as South America's rising star.”
Juan Forero National Public Radio (NPR)
“Several dimensions intersect in a way that gives added importance to our hemisphere: there is more energy and petroleum in the Americas than in the Middle East, the population of the hemisphere, from Chile to Canada, will be larger than China’s by 2060 and the U.S. Hispanic population is now larger than that of any Latin American country except Mexico.”
Steve Vetter President and CEO, Partners of the Americas
Program Concept
Today, students across the nation are confronting a more competitive environment where employers demand an experienced and globally competent workforce. Preparing the talent for this workforce requires that community colleges provide a variety of experiential learning options for their students. By nurturing international relationships, strengthening curricula with international components and offering diverse opportunities for international experience, community colleges will increase the number of students that graduate with the global competence employers seek.
The call for global competence is nowhere more apparent than in the Americas, where governments, societies and economies are integrating faster and through more innovative models than anywhere else. The middle class in Latin America has grown by 50 million in the last decade and this growth promises to continue thanks to the region’s vast manufacturing, agricultural, and mineral resources. What’s more, the Hispanic population in the United States has grown to more than 50 million, while approximately 40 percent of U.S. exports go to our Latin American and Caribbean neighbors. This integration inextricably links the future of the people and nations of the Americas. Understanding the Americas is not a luxury – it is a necessity.
The need and demand for global citizens in the Americas is clear and the responsibility for preparing them falls to our educators. The Ambassadors for Prosperity program is designed to help community colleges and educators plug into the Americas and prepare the next generation of workers with the global competencies and service mentality critical to success in the 21st century.
Through the Ambassadors for Prosperity volunteer and internship programs, students are immersed in a genuine Colombian experience that gives them a chance to develop their leadership and professional skills in a dynamic and captivating atmosphere while exploring sustainable and innovative social projects. These participants emerge with a new perspective and are transformed into global citizens that embody the values of service, community and mutual understanding, and understand how Colombian society functions and how Colombian citizens strive to connect with the US.
Colombia provides the setting for the transformative experience, having emerged from the challenges of the last century as a far-sighted regional leader. The country contains the third largest Spanish speaking population in the world, unparalleled biodiversity, a strong economy nicknamed “the Latin American puma” and international caliber cities and institutions of higher learning.
The current program has been developed to give educators like you a chance to sample the unique,
international service-learning opportunities offered to the Ambassadors for Prosperity. Together with your bilingual guides, you will learn about the life-changing work of our finest host organizations, explore opportunities for engaging international experiences in your curricula and enjoy Colombia’s most enthralling cultural attractions. You will see first-hand how an international service experience can change the lives of students and help build the next generation of global citizens and Ambassadors for Prosperity!
Thank you for joining us on this amazing journey. See you in Colombia!

Payment Policy
All participants must make a non-refundable deposit of $500 at least 30 days prior the
starting date of the program. This deposit will be deducted from the total program fee.
The remaining balance can be paid in a lump sum or in installments, but must be
submitted no later than two weeks prior to the participant’s planned arrival date in
Colombia. If payment is not received by the designated date, the participant’s
registration and placement will be cancelled and the $500 deposit will not be
reimbursed.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Cancellation and refund requests are to be made in writing to Partners of the Americas.
Upon request for a refund, Partners of the Americas will provide a refund form to the
participant. Refunds are issued within 30 days of the receipt of the refund form through
bank wire transfer less transfer fees. The participant is responsible for cancelation of all
travel arrangements. If cancellation is made 21 days or more prior to the intended start
date, the participant will be refunded all of their money less transfer fees and the
deposit. Cancellations made less than 21 days prior to the planned start date will be
refunded 25% of the program fee minus the $500 deposit. Participants who cancel on
the arrival day or during the program will not receive a refund.
Change of Date Policy
Significantly altering a group´s planned arrival can seriously inconvenience our host
organizations and lodging sites and requires a great deal of extra work on the part of
our in-country staff. Arranging visits and lodging is a complicated process requiring
commitment from all sides: the participants, Heart for Change, Partners of the
Americas, the host organizations, the hotels and others. A request to reschedule the
program start date must be made at least 21 days before the anticipated start date to be
15
honored with no extra charge. A request received less than 21 days prior to the planned
start date incurs a $100 change-of-date fee which will be charged to each participant.
For group programs, only the group as a whole can submit a request for a date-change.
It is the responsibility of the group to acquire and submit confirmation that all group
members are in favor of the change.
Lodging Policy
Participants will stay in suitable accommodations chosen by Heart for Change and
Partners of the Americas. Due to lodging constraints in Bogota, Villa de Leyva and
Leticia, participants might be required to share a room with another participant of the
same gender. Standard rooms accommodate 1-2 travelers each and include single or
double beds with shared or private bathrooms. Participants must indicate in their
Registration Form or acceptance if they wish to reserve a double-occupancy room,
though it cannot be guaranteed until receipt of program payment. Double-occupancy
rooms are only available in Bogota and to be shared by volunteers of the same gender
only unless both applicants inform Heart for Change in Registration Form or at time of
acceptance.
Heart for Change Ambassador Policy
As representatives of Heart for Change and as ambassadors and representatives of
their home country, participants are expected to act maturely at all times and respect
themselves, others and their environment. Participants over the age of 18 are allowed
to drink alcohol according to Colombia law. However, no alcohol is allowed on the
participant sites or in the Heart for Change participant lodging. Smoking is not allowed
on the work sites or at the Heart for Change lodging. Illegal drugs are not allowed at any
time during the participant experience, and if a participant is found in possession of or
under the influence of any illegal substance, he/she will be asked to immediately leave
the program without a refund. Eviction of program includes eviction from lodging and
work site. All participants are expected to abide by local laws. Heart for Change is not
responsible for any issues caused by participants breaking the law. Be smart, be safe.
