While skilled tradespeople are in demand across the country, some geographic pockets are especially rich in steady, well-paying jobs that represent a wide spectrum of trades. As home to one of the country’s busiest harbors, Hampton Roads is a transportation hub that generates a signifi cant number of trades jobs that can’t be outsourced. The Port of Virginia, with terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News, welcomes ships from more than 300 ports in over 100 countries. Last year, over 15.6 million tons of cargo was offl oaded and hauled to regional distribution centers or further inland by truck or rail. Then there’s the world’s largest naval base, which anchors major shipyards where vessels of all kinds are built and repaired. Adding to the mix is an international airport and several regional airports. But whether it’s a cargo container of coffee coming in or a planeload of passengers heading out, it’s tradespeople who make it all happen, from truckers and shipfi tters to welders and aviation mechanics, and employers say they often fail to fi nd enough skilled people to fi ll their openings. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” confi rms Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a staffi ng agency that places tradespeople in shipyards and other locations. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” “Everyone’s saying there’s not work out there,” notes Patrick Scarlett, the admissions director at Aviation Institution of Maintenance in Chesapeake, which trains air traffi c controllers, aviation mechanics and avionics equipment techs. “There’s a ton of work – you just have to be qualifi ed to do it. And these are very rewarding, very high-paying careers.” Despite the fact that skilled trades jobs make excellent career choices, they are often overshadowed or out-promoted by other fi elds. “When I was growing up, we were all told the same thing, you’ve got to get a degree, and I’m sure that’s what students are being told today,” says Scarlett. “But I have lots of friends who went to college, got bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and they’re working at JCPenney. On the fl ip side of that, I have a lot of friends that work out at the shipyards and they aren’t worried about losing out on work, they’ve got families and nice homes, all because they have that skill. So one of the things that I always relate to my students is that a degree is great, but you’re going to need a trade skill too in order to be able to survive out there today. I have a two year old at home and when he gets older, I’m not going to tell him you need to get a college degree. I’m going to say, look, you need a trade skill – then you can get a college degree.” “Even if you have a degree, I think in these times you should have a skill to fall back on,” agrees Totton Walton, vice president of safety and maintenance for CrossGlobe Group, a national trucking, warehousing and logistics company. Walton has hired teachers and even IT professionals. “There will always be job security in trucking – America stops without trucks,” he says.
In fact, there are whole industries that depend on skilled tradespeople in order to stay in business. “During the peak of the recession, a lot of the airline companies were laying off people left and right,” says Scarlett. “Continental gave a breakdown of their layoffs; 200 were pilots and 800 were customer service-related jobs. Out of a thousand people laid off, not one was an A&P mechanic (an aviation maintenance technician). The FAA requires the airlines to keep their planes fl ightworthy or they won’t let them fl y, so the airlines have to keep their A&P mechanics. That’s an incredible amount of job security to see a thousand of your co-workers receive pink slips but you’re still working.” The skilled trades encompass hundreds of job specialties that cater to a wide variety of interests and they all welcome diversity in age, gender and race. It’s a career path that is wide open to career switchers as well as new high school grads looking for their fi rst job. Training programs that lead to required certifi cation or licensure run the gamut from a few classes stretching over several months to apprenticeships that can run up to fi ve years depending on your course of study. Tidewater Community College, career schools and technical institutes have developed an extensive list of accredited programs available locally. So if you’re looking for rewarding work that pays well and offers a great deal of job security, becoming a skilled tradesperson is one smart career move. ■

Profi le: HVAC Technicans During the heat of summer, we crank up our air conditioners and take for granted all that cool comfort wafting our way. But should our unit begin huffi ng and puffi ng hot air or no air at all, an HVAC tech immediately becomes king of the tradespeople. That alone is enough to generate some serious job security, but HVAC techs also protect business-critical, multi-million dollar pieces of equipment as well. “Along with homes and business that need air conditioning and heating for human comfort, almost every manufacturing process requires some kind of heating and cooling system to make an end product and they can’t afford to have a production line affected because that system has failed,” says John Kerner, CEO of the Kerner Group, a multi-company organization that supplies HVAC, electrical, indoor air quality and facility management services. All of that helps explain the increasing need for HVAC techs: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC
industry was roughly 50% undermanned,” reports Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu). Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing competition for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains. Most HVAC techs enter the fi eld after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certifi cation exam.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay of HVAC techs is $42,530, though that amount can increase signifi cantly. “Our very fi rst HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Kerner also notes the hefty paychecks that HVAC techs can earn: “I can tell you that our senior mechanics
make more than a school teacher,” he says, “and they have company-provided vehicles that they can drive back and forth to work – it’s one less vehicle they have to buy, insure and maintain. “This is a growing career fi eld that is evolving. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.” ■
The experienced HVAC Mechanic will be responsible to inspect, repair, and maintain HVAC systems; read/ interprets control circuits, schematics, diagrams, blueprints, and specifi cations; operates hand tools and power tools safely and according to manufacturers’ instructions; uses protective measures to minimize safety risks to self and others while performing job duties; maintains parts, supplies, and equipment.
Sentara Leigh Hospital has an immediate opening for an experienced full-time HVAC Mechanic.

Profi le: Automotive Mechanics For those with a knack for problem solving, there’s a well-paying occupation that welcomes your talents – auto mechanics. Since these are jobs that can’t be outsourced, job security is one of the appeals of the fi eld. “There are always jobs,” says Bud Brueggeman, who recently retired as TCC’s automotive technology program head. “Even during the slowdown there were jobs for automotive techs. It’s one of those fi elds where if you are a skilled employee, you can get a job.” Another attraction is the opportunity to work with rapidly evolving technology that places a heavy emphasis on analytic, diagnostic and computer skills in an increasingly high-tech environment. “When I fi rst started, computers were just being introduced into vehicles,” recalls Larry Grubb, the auto tech coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “A lot of technicians at that time didn’t want any part of it,” he laughs. “Today just about every single system on a car is computer controlled in one way or the other, from brakes to lights and steering suspension. What we’re seeing is that students nowadays are technically savvy, so that defi nitely helps them grasp a lot of this.” Grubb says the complex work that automotive techs perform is just the beginning of where the fi eld is heading. “It’s getting very interesting. I’ve been doing this for probably 30 years now or longer and it’s as exciting for me today as when I was fi rst starting out because the technology keeps changing; there’s something new to learn all the time. Now there’s this new fuel injection, there are the hybrids and there are all the alternative fuels – it’s hard to imagine where this area is going to go.” People who enjoy trouble-shooting are a good fi t for this occupation, Grubb says. “When you have a vehicle come
in with a problem, being able to address that challenge and see it leave with the issue repaired is very satisfying.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 17% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2020, with a current median hourly pay rate of $17.21. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $59,590 a year. Auto mechanics work for dealerships, independent repair shops, national chains – even tire and auto part stores. And this is a fi eld that lends itself to entrepreneurs who want to start their own businesses as long as they’re self-motivated and have the necessary skills, says Brueggeman. “You have to buy tools and equipment, but it’s fairly simple as far as setting up a business and getting started.” So, for an in-demand job that embraces new technology and offers great opportunities for advancement, rev up to a career as an auto mechanic. ■

Profi le: Construction As newspapers begin to cautiously hint at a long-awaited upswing in the building industry, construction tradespeople can expect their already busy work lives to get even busier. When building jobs contracted several years ago, the construction trades simply moved on to ancillary tasks: remodeling homes, replacing aging roofs, wiring high tech offi ces, repairing roads and performing specialty industrial work. As a whole, the building trades are able to move from one work sphere to another as market conditions shift, giving them an enviable resilience. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that most will see an increase in demand through 2020. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 40% through 2020. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, drywall installers, carpenters, cement masons and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 23-34% through that same period. Construction inspector jobs are projected to grow by 18%. The pay can be quite good. Electricians earned a median hourly wage of $23.20 per hour as of 2010.
Top earners claimed an annual median income of over $80,890. Electricians who are skilled in voice, data and video wiring will see the most demand, though in Hampton Roads marine electricians with shipbuilding and ship repair experience are especially sought after. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains Ainslie. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were taught through practical experience and then later on through trade schools or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” To help counter that trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created the Building Trades Academy, where students learn trades that are in demand locally, such as
carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Other options include training programs at local community colleges and technical schools that cover many of the construction trades, and area builders and subcontractors are often open to apprentices and interns. “If someone is interested in any of the building trades, they can contact the Tidewater Builders Association (757-420-2566) for more information or talk to their guidance counselor,” advises Ainslie. ■

Profi le: Truck Drivers Decades ago the image of the burly truck driver was a well-earned one. “I remember when trucks didn’t have power steering,” recalls Totton Walton, vice president of safety and maintenance for CrossGlobe Group, a national trucking, warehousing and logistics company. “You’d be lucky to have an air conditioner working or AM radio.” Today? “Trucks ride like they’re fl oating,” Walton says. “They have air ride suspension and have come an extremely long way in comfort. Some trucks even have automatic transmission.” Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them. “Microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, televisions,” lists Walton. “It’s a whole
different world for a driver now.” The comfort upgrades are important, but so is the job security. “America stops without trucks,” Walton points out. Almost every product we use travels by truck at some point - food, clothing, household products, equipment, even the cars on a dealership lot – which explains the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by 13% for delivery truck drivers and 21% for tractor-trailer drivers. This increased demand for more drivers – especially as many of the older pros reach retirement age – means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” reports Matthew Woods,

an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” he says. Drivers can choose over-the-road runs that take them all the way across the country, or work pick-up and delivery hauls within their city or region. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Woods. Most of CrossGlobe’s drivers work regional runs, says Walton. “We have owner-operators who own and drive their own trucks and run under our insurance and authority; 98% of them pull container boxes that come in through the port. We have a warehouse at the Norfolk port, one at the Newport News port and a warehouse right outside the gate at the Portsmouth port. Most drivers in the container business make runs in their own state or the states surrounding them because with a container you’re usually hauling in just one direction and running empty in the other. When you’re hauling long distances, you try to be loaded in both directions and you may end up hauling coast to coast.” Driving is a career that readily accommodates a variety of lifestyles, family circumstances and personal preferences. “The industry is full of jobs where a driver can be
home every single night or they can be out in their trucks for two months at a time,” says Walton. “Either way, the pay is good. Most of our drivers make over $100,000 a year.” Beginning drivers start off at a healthy pay rate too. “Our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year,” says Woods. “A seasoned truck driver with maybe fi ve years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” he estimates. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including TCC’s eight-week program that features state-of-the-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once students complete the TCC course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests. Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. “There is defi nitely a tremendous amount of independence in this job,” confi rms Walton. “It’s good for the type of person who doesn’t want to work in an offi ce or a warehouse with someone looking over their shoulder. For self-starters who can produce results, drive safely, and like getting out and meeting different people, this is the ideal job for them.” ■

Profi le: Shipbuilding and Ship Repair In an area known for its superb deepwater harbor, well-traffi cked shipping lanes and strong naval presence, it’s no surprise that shipbuilding and repair is a major economic driver. In fact, several of the largest regional employers are shipyards and there are also hundreds of subcontractors and industry-related businesses – all vying for skilled tradespeople who are in short supply. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a staffi ng agency that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” “We’re all pulling from the same pool of workers and there are only so many of them,” notes Karen Baird, a recruiter with Oceaneering-Marine Services Division in Chesapeake who has resorted to advertising outside the area to fi ll openings. Part of the reason is an aging workforce. For instance, Newport News Shipbuilding announced last summer that they expect to hire 10,000 to 15,000 workers over the next fi ve years to replace retiring workers. “There’s a shortage of skilled workers and we have a backlog of work,” explains Brad Mason, Director of Operations at AMSEC, a marine services company with a local presence. That means excellent employment opportunities for a wide variety of shipbuilding trades that include welders, electricians and carpenters. “Inside machinists are something we’re always looking for,” adds Baird. “These are the people who manufacture
things for the submarines and vessels we work on. It’s a dying trade because now they have machinery that does all that for you, while back in the day it was more hands on; they would do the cutting, welding, whatever was necessary. It’s rare to fi nd those hands-on tradespeople today.” “There are also laggers who install insulation, pipefi tters, and pattern makers,” lists Mason. “You’ve got electronics technicians, outside machinists, shipfi tters who cut and position metal on the ship, and riggers who use chain falls and cranes to move heavy loads, like a section of the ship that might weigh 900 tons. There are a lot of different skills represented in a shipyard.” Skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. “Our starting salaries for an unskilled person averages around $14 an hour, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but if they pick up a skill and work hard, by the end of four years they can be in the $45,000 - $50,000 range and they don’t have the school debt that other folks have incurred for their education,” says Mason. “This can be extremely rewarding work, both from a fi nancial and personal basis.” Rodriguez agrees that the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” The benefi ts can be quite extensive as well, says Baird. “We all tend to have really good retirement plans at the marine companies and shipyards.”

“And if you go to work on a ship, there are so many opportunities to grow,” says Cathey Botwright, president of Seaside Staffi ng, an agency that places skilled tradespeople in local shipyards. “Most of the management at these privately-owned shipyards here, from the foremen to the directors to the vice presidents and executive management, they all came from the trades. Metro shipyard and the old Northrup Grumman Newport News, all of their management came from working on the ships. They showed the ability to do more and they all rose from the deck of a ship.” Along with the good pay and opportunities for professional growth, there are also the intangible benefi ts of working in the shipbuilding industry. “There is the pride in saying hey, I’ve worked on board the USS George H.W. Bush or some other vessel that is used to protect the country,” says Rodriguez. “You’re a part of something that is very signifi cant to the United States. And how many people actually get the opportunity to step onto an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine?” Like all regional marine service employers, Rodriguez hires a diversity of people, including women. “In fact, one of our best welders is a woman who works for a client on a job that was initially supposed to be a two-month project. They’ve had her for almost fi ve months now and
they don’t want to let her go. “We don’t discriminate – if you have a skilled trade or a desire to learn a trade, if you’re going to show up every day and perform, then we’re interested in you.” ■

Profi le: Aviation Mechanics & Air Traffi c Controllers
If the idea of a desk-bound job holds little appeal for you, consider the high-fl ying fi eld of aviation, where air traffi c controllers and aviation mechanics enjoy careers that offers technical challenge along with generous pay and great benefi ts. Air traffi c controllers are charged with overseeing airborne planes and coordinating takeoffs and landings. Aviation mechanics keep the planes in sound repair and safely aloft. To get started, students enroll in an FAA-certifi ed school like the Aviation Institution of Maintenance in Chesapeake, which has training programs for air traffi c controllers, aviation mechanics and avionics equipment techs. Aviation mechanics with the industry-standard A&P certifi cate are qualifi ed to work with the body and engine of the airplane, explains Jerry Lee, director of education at the Chesapeake campus of Aviation Institution of Maintenance. A popular related fi eld is avionics, which includes repairing and maintaining navigation and other electronic components. “Until a few years ago, companies looked for either aviation mechanics or avionics techs – today they want someone who can do both jobs,” he says. “Our aviation mechanics program by itself runs 19 months and the aviation
mechanics program combined with avionics takes 23 months.” Aviation mechanics should see a job growth increase of 6% through 2020 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics and Lee says their graduates are experiencing no problems fi nding jobs. “As a matter of fact, we actually have employers calling in and asking for students with their A&P certifi cate because they have openings.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics places the median hourly pay at $25.59 and annual pay at $53,220 as of 2010, with high-skill workers earning over $72,250 a year. Job perks include free air travel. For those interested in air traffi c control, the Aviation Institution of Maintenance just launched a new two-year associate’s degree program in partnership with Hampton University, says Patrick Scarlett, admissions director at the aviation school. “Students take their general education courses, like English, online at their own pace through Hampton University and do their hands-on air traffi c control training at our facility. “They can contact our school (http://aviationmaintenance.edu) and we’ll sit down and talk with them about the program, do a career planning session and once they say this is something they want to do, we’ll walk them through the Hampton University website to fi ll out their application then and there.” To qualify for the job, controllers must be U.S. citizens, pass a security check and medical exam, be able to read and speak English clearly, and start their careers no later than their 31st birthday. That means students entering a training program must be 28 years or younger, says Scarlett. Air traffi c controllers earn an annual median salary of $108,040 and a seat at one of the most interesting jobs in the airline industry. ■

Huntington Ingalls Industries is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed tohiring and retaining a diverse workforce. U.S. Citizenship required.
Profi le: Welders If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “We can’t fi nd enough anywhere in the country,” says Brad Mason, director of operations for AMSEC, a marine services company with a local presence. “And it’s not only our business, but also power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – they all use welders and it’s hard to fi nd them.” Because they are in short supply, welders command excellent wages, notes Thomas Stout, program head for electomechanical controls at Tidewater Community College. “The opportunities can be very lucrative, especially for anyone who can weld aluminum, or is qualifi ed to weld in a nuclear power plant, underwater or do ship repair.” Locally, people who want to enter the fi eld can opt for registered apprenticeships or programs developed by community colleges and technical training schools in partnership with regional industries. Shakirah Harrell, the welding coordinator at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu), got her start at Newport News Shipbuilding. “I went through a 4-year apprenticeship program and worked my way up from basic welding to pipe welding,” she says. “I worked there for fi ve years and discovered I liked showing other people how to weld, so I started teaching part-time at Tidewater Tech, then full-time and now I’m the program coordinator.” Harrell says that there are great opportunities for advancement in the fi eld and that females welders do very well. Mason agrees – “It’s a very complex skill, and one thing that we have found in our industry is that women are extremely good welders. I wish we could fi nd more women who were interested in it.” While the fi eld has gone very high tech, with over 100 different processes that can be used, welding still rests on a foundation of four basic fundamentals. “We touch on all four processes in our program and follow the AWS (American Welding Society) guidelines,” says Harrell. “Each employer has their own welding test, and we give our students the ability to go out and pass those tests. Then the students receive their certifi cations through the employer.” Some of the local marine staffi ng agencies have developed their own programs to help alleviate the shortage of welders. Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, (www.nsc-tech.com), recently began a program that trains and certifi es welders for shipyard work. “They are a dying breed so I purchased a fabrication shop and I’ve got ten welding booths set up with standard
shipyard equipment. When you pass our test, we transfer your certifi cation documents to our clients’ quality assurance departments so we can put you to work in a shipyard. We’re actually talking about providing our own apprenticeship program in the second quarter.” Top earners reported an annual pay rate of $53,690 as of 2010, while the median hourly wages were $17.04 per hour. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into operating or programming robotic or other welding machines. Welders may fi nd themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the fl oor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. The median salary for welders who choose shipbuilding is a healthy $46,015. About half of all welders work a 40-hour work week, but overtime is common and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that one in fi ve welders rack up 50 hours a week or more. Because many fi rms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and family needs. If the idea of employers competing for your talents appeals to you, and you want top pay and benefi ts, a welding career is hard to beat. ■

We are Currently Hiring for the Following Position:Heavy Equipment OperatorNewport News - Job ID# 49969914
Reducing human impact on the environment for 70 years.
Profi le: Maintenance Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to offi ce towers to schools, you’ll fi nd grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Inside critical utilities, such as HRSD’s wastewater treatment plants, workers keep machinery operating smoothly and protect the environment at the same time. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and fi nd out what we do, decide
what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a fi eld that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefi ts, but you also have the added benefi t of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Other good options in this job category include residential and commercial property maintenance. Responding to a growing need, the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, developed a course of study that teaches both property management and maintenance. “We had a number of the apartment management companies come to us and ask us to tailor a program for them,” explains Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. “They need people who can go into someone’s home, communicate clearly, analyze what the maintenance issue is, determine how to take
care of it and then make it happen very quickly. It’s been a very successful program for both the students and the management companies.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 11% through 2020 and notes that the annual median pay in 2010 was $34,730. Industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers should see an increased need of 19% through 2020 and their median pay in 2010 was $44,160/yr. Specialty workers and supervisors command higher wages. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often fi nd good opportunities for career advancement. ■
