DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS:

The year 2009 has been one to remember for CCDA. Like many ministries that have been around for 20 years, we are growing up and becoming a more mature organization (some of our board members commented that as we turn ‘21’ this next year, we are finally becoming adults). There are many signs that demonstrate this new stage in our development:

We have great leadership in CCDA that is as committed as ever. John Perkins, Wayne ‘Coach’ Gordon, Barbara Williams-Skinner and I are working diligently with our board to provide strong, visionary leadership for our association.

We have seven new board members who give us new and fresh ideas as we move past our 20th year of ministry.

We have an amazing staff that is capable and committed to help fuel this next stage of growth and development for CCDA.

We just concluded a wonderful conference in Cincinnati with 2500 attendees coming together to explore how to make ‘Kingdom Priorities’ a way of life as we minister in some of the most marginalized neighborhoods in our world.

We met face to face with hundreds of CCDA leaders around the nation in one of our CCDA Cafes in 2009. We had an opportunity to connect, and more importantly, to listen, to our members’ feedback about CCDA and our services.

We are investing heavily in the development of young leaders in our association through our Emerging Leaders Cohort and through the National Student Leadership Intensive.

We launched a new curriculum project to develop ‘Toolkits’ for each of our 8 Components of CCD. Our Empowerment Toolkit, written by Dr. Mary Nelson, is ready this year.

We weathered a tough year financially with the help of our reserve fund, and we are primed to have a strong year in 2010 despite our current economy.

I want to thank you for investing in the work of CCDA through your gifts and donations, through your membership fees, and through your participation in the CCDA National Conference and Institute classes. We feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve committed leaders like yourselves who are concerned about loving and empowering the poor of our nation, and seeing neighborhoods transformed by the power of God.

I am convinced that we will look back at 2009 as the year when CCDA transitioned from being a young organization to becoming a MOVEMENT of God’s people, fully committed to restoring under-resourced communities for the glory of God!

Thank you for your partnership with CCDA,

Noel CastellanosCEO, CCDA

This year marked the second annual student “intensive,” a conference-within-the-conference targeted to 16-21 year-olds. It is part of a larger initiative to develop indigenous youth leaders based on CCDA’s 8 Key Components who will continue living and teaching this Biblical approach to ministry. This year’s NSLI was a collaborative effort with continued sponsorship by the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative and a new partnership with World Vision. The end result was an increase in registrations from 40 to 106. Phil Jackson (The House Covenant Church) led the bible studies and Lina Thompson (World Vision) conducted the practical training sessions. The student leaders also met in small groups with CCDA board members, emerging leaders, and conference speakers. After one of the sessions on Empowerment, young Christian Ibarra from Chicago simply said, “Now I get it!”

CCDA CAFES

The Cinci conference had the biggest turnout yet—2500—with a huge number of first-time attendees! Respondents to our conference survey said they were inspired, received valuable training and connected with others. In general, attendees had one remark about the networking opportunities offered:“We want more!”

Dr. John Perkins, CCDA Founder, set the tone at each morning’s bible study.

CCDA Cafes are one-night events where Noel introduces the association to interested groups across the country—with some food and some fun, too.

The NSLI group shows off their leadership potential.

CCDA Chair Dr. Barbara Skinner welcomes attendees on opening night.

First-time attendees enjoyed a free scoop at our Ice Cream Social.

As program director of an inner city youth ministry I was ready to throw in the towel.

A friend paid for me to come to the conference and it was the best thing that could have ever happened!”

The group I came with left Saturday, but I found a way to stay until Sunday to hear Dr. Perkins

one last time…He’s one of the most profound and biblically-based speakers I have ever heard....”

I have been educated, encouraged and restored because of the conference. To God be the Glory!”–Erica Wilson/SOAR Youth Min.

What started as an idea at a January, 2009 staff meeting quickly became an opportunity for CEO Noel Castellanos to visit 15 different cities. Individuals and organizational members graciously hosted CCDA Cafes, providing a location and hors d’oeuvres (like the buffalo wings at the Buffalo, NY café above) or dessert. These cafes quickly became events where members in a city or region could connect, and newcomers could meet the association and learn about our biblical philosophy of restoring under-resourced communities. More Cafes to come on the 2010 Reunion Tour!

Eighteen Christian Community Development leaders, aged 25-40, were chosen from all over the country for CCDA’s first Emerging Leaders Cohort (ELC). The two-fold purpose of this cohort, created by CCDA board member Rev. John Liotti, is to provide opportunity for the elders of CCDA to pass on the DNA—history, theology and practices—of Christian Community Development (CCD) to this generation of leaders. Its mission is to also help emerging leaders develop strong networks to sustain them for this difficult work. The 2009 cohort came together for retreats in Jackson, Mississippi and Santa Cruz, California, where they prayed, worshipped, and gleaned together from “the doctors:” John Perkins, Barbara Williams-Skinner, Luis Carlo and Wayne “Coach” Gordon. Watch for announcements regarding formation of the next Emerging Leaders Cohort.

The experience served as an amazing clarifier for my specific calling as a CCD minister

and [helped me] come to terms with the beautiful uniqueness of my specific setting.”–Matthew Watson

As we approach our 21st year as an association, we have a deep sense that CCDA is becoming a MOVEMENT of passionate Christ followers who are seeking creative ways to empower the poor in our world! In 2010, these are some activities we are most excited about, designed to help us get fully engaged in restoring under-resourced communities:

CURRICULUM TOOLKIT ROLLOUT Our new Empowerment Toolkit, a book and DVD set that equips CCD leaders to create an environment of transformational community empowerment, ships in January. We will also begin creation of our second toolkit.

CCDA CAFÉ REUNION TOUROur 2010 CCDA Café Conference Reunion Tour begins in January. The purpose is to renew and strengthen relationships in cities where we have strong, committed CCDA partners, and to celebrate our past accomplishments with good friends.

CEO Noel Castellanos will host a Reunion Café in each city where we have held a national conference in the past 20 years. Contact Dave Clark for information.

LOOKINGINTO 2010

Celebrating 20 Years of Restoring Under-Resourced Communities

Isaiah 58:12

Celebrating

For 20 years, the Christian Community Development Association has inspired, trained and connected Christians who are restoring under-resourced communities throughout the world. As we gather in Chicago, September 7-11, 2010 to celebrate this significant anniversary, we will Remember our roots, Rejoice in what God has done in and through us, and Reimagine this movement in our ever-changing world.

“Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins

and will raise up the age-old foundations;

you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”

REMEMBER the Past

REJOICE in the Present

REIMAGINE the Future

Words cannot adequately express what attending the CCDA conference meant to

us. The passion, dreams, and desires it sparked will have ripple effects for a long time throughout our community. We are already making plans for next year!–Mary Provence/Rebuilding the Wall, Inc., IN
