Executive Director's Message

Chinese Culture Center is proud to sponsor

the China from the Inside, the new KQED-Granada Television co-production for PBS

and the BBC. CCC was invited and has

also participated in a panel discussion with

filmmaker, Jonathan Lewis. The four one-

hour episodes of China from the Inside

include visits to temples in Tibet, Commu-

nity Party meetings, a village election,

court rooms, newspaper offices, a women's

labor camp, and a country wedding. From

these domains, viewers observe the diffi-

culties of navigating politics and culture in

this vast country. The mini-series brings

the viewer a China that few outside the

country ever glimpse, a country of 1.3 bil-

lion people undergoing extraordinary

growth while facing prodigious obstacles.

Harmony & Bliss Fundraiser, another successful year!

By Sabina Chen

The Chinese Culture Center cele-

brated its 8th Annual Harmony &

Bliss Fundraiser on November 4,

2006. It was the first time the eventwas held at home, at the Chinese

Culture Center, which was trans-

formed to an elegant venue welcom-

ing guests in black tie or Chinese

formal attire. Hosted by the San

Francisco Financial District Hilton,

the event drew over 300 people in

support of CCC.

Guests were treated to an eleven-

course Asian fusion meal, exclu-sively designed by the Hilton's Chef

Darren McCabe. Each course was

paired with champagne and five

wines. The evening featured

CCC's Campaign Co-Chair Dr.

Colin Wong as emcee and Board of

Directors Co-Chair Albert Cheng as

auctioneer, who rallied the crowd to

bid on rare wines and airfare to

Hong Kong. Our fearless auctioneer

also raised support for CCC's In

Search of Roots program (see page 2)

and invited several former and current

Roots interns onto the stage.

Harmony & Bliss was the culmina-

tion of many volunteers, led by for-

mer Executive Director Gloria Tai,

Campaign for A New Beginning

By Emily Avera

Officially launched to coincide with

the Grand Re-Opening of the Chi-

nese Culture Center in 2006, the

Campaign for A New Beginning is a

fundraising campaign that has three

major thrusts: community outreach,

focus on youth, and enhanced exhi-bitions. It seeks to highlight re-

newed efforts in those three major

areas, which signal a new beginning

for the Chinese Culture Foundation

and Center.

Since its launch the Campaign for

A New Beginning has reached a

grand total of $491,550 of outright

gifts and pledges.

But there is a still a long way to go.

While already healthily exceeding the

$300,000 goal set for 2006, there is

the goal for an additional $3.5 million

for the remainder of the Campaign.

Much of the revenue will come from . In the future, a donor wall will

donors who secure naming opportuni- ' be erected in the auditorium lo

ties, which acknowledge donations of recognizing donors to the Campa

or exceeding $50,000 to the endow- who have contributed $1,000ment fund. more. It will be designed

Gordon Chun Design.

Thanks to the generosity of donors

Sarina Kong, and Tiger Wong and

family, we are pleased to announce

that the first gallery section will be

named the H.P. Kong Gallery, and the

Gallery Moon Gate will honor Sam-

uel & Fay Wong. Their honorary

plaques will be posted in the Center

in coming months. And there are sev-

eral other exciting naming oppo

nities still available, including

grand ballroom/auditorium,

three gallery sections.

Chinese Culture Center partners with community groups

By Sabina Chen

The Chinese Culture Center is

pleased to host community arts

groups, such as the Chinatown Pho-tographic Society, the American Ing

Goe Foundation, Huayi Performing

Group, and the San Francisco Gu-

Zheng Music Society. One of the

goals of CCC's Campaign for a

New Beginning is to reach out to

community cultural programming.

Partnerships with Chinatown and

other community arts organizations

will be encouraged to help produce

quality programs and exhibitions atCCc.

Another goal of the New Beginning

is to engage youth and the next gen-

eration with the Chinese Culture

Center. In 2007, CCC is looking to

partner with

groups such as

age of 99.

Back in the late 1970's and 1980's,

Remembering Gladys Wong

the Center needed volunteers to man

the Gallery Shop, which was being

expanded, to include Chinese folk

arts, and ceramics in addition to

books and magazines. Mrs. Eva

Lowe, a life member and supporter of

the Foundation, agreed to help. She

recruited her friend Gladys Wong and

COUSIn Helen Young and together,

they formed a regular schedule to vol-

unteer at the gallery shop from 10:00

a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Tuesday

through Friday. This arrangement

lasted for a period of 17 years! They

would greet visitors, record visitor

numbers, make sales and by 4:00

p.m., when the Shop closed, they

would put the daily sales receipts into

an envelope and hand it to the recep-

tionist.

dies was 70, they took the responsi-
