Chinese Culture Center Presents C4
By Abby Chen
You might ask, what is C4? C4 stands forChinese Culture Center Cinema. With
films and follow up discussion, C4 is a
program designed to connect with the di-
verse and changing Chinese community in
San Francisco Bay Area.
C4 will showcase films with true-to-life
portrayals of Chinese, rich in diversity,
and deeply rooted in a dynamic society.
In the 1990s, China became one of the
fastest growing economies in the world.
Its entry to the World Trade Organizationhas further intensified its interaction with
the global community. China's economic
success has, however, often overshadowed
the political, social and cultural changes
that have been taking place in the past two
decades. Many people in the West who
have limited experience or knowledge
about contemporary China continue to
view China as a culture full of unchanging
traditions. Perhaps it is time for this huge
nation to be understood: its people, its
culture, and its history.
Screening Schedule:
June 3, 1:00 PMOpening: Nostalgia (Reel China Biennial Grand
Reward) &Guarding Shangri-la
Nostalgia is the winner of the Reel China 2006
Best Documentary Award. This is a break-
through film about the transformation of Shang-
hai's urban environment. When filmmaker Shu
Haolun hears that hisboyhood neighborhood of
traditional Shikumen housing he grew up in is
slated for demolition, Shu takes his DV camera
back home. Moving between chats with
grandma, walks through the old alleyways, and
re-enactments of his childhood, the Nostalgia is
an entertaining but pointed and poignant diary
about the heavy price to be paid for urban devel-
opment.
Remark from the jury: "It is not just a personal
history, but also a critical look at social values.
Who actually 'owns' this neighborhood? The
residents? And who defines what is "best" for
the neighborhood, and for those who live there?
These are important questions, and not just in
China. This film raises questions that not only
China - or, more accurately Shanghai - faces,
but also questions that apply to cities around theworld."

In my spare time-the few moments
between community events, board
meetings, grant writing, and budgets-I
have been planning my wedding.
Blake and I wanted to elope, but our
families wouldn't let us. They said we
needed to celebrate, as families joining
together. My family and relatives are
immigrants from Taiwan; Blake's fam-
ily is 5th generation Oregonian. There
are people coming in from Taiwan, Ja-
pan, Germany, and Falls City, Oregon.
Everybody has an opinion, of course.
Food, location, ceremony, who gets
invited and who doesn't. Do we have a
tea ceremony? (Yes, but my parents
have declared they will be embar-
rassed.) Do we have a Chinese ban-
quet? (Yes, but don't order the jelly-
fish.) Would Blake's relatives eat the
shark fin's soup? (Maybe.) Would my
family be offended if there was no
shark's fin soup? (Probably.) Couldn't
we just have pizza instead?
Being director of the Chinese Culture
Center is a lot like planning a wedding:
there are a lot of opinions about food,
location, and who's invited to the table.
In the end, we still have to be family.
It's a big wedding. From our In Search
of Roots interns, to Chinese-American
emerging artists, to the Cantonese-
speaking Chinatown immigrant,
"Chinese Culture" must encompass
both shark's fin soup and pizza.
This spring and summer, CCC is lo
ing to serve up a healthy helping
"Chinese Culture," starting with
programming for May, Asian Pac
American Heritage Month. Join us
our panel discussion on May
"Mirror on the Wall: a Conversati
between American-Born and Chin
Immigrants." With this forum, we h
to explore dynamics currently fac
our community: divisions between
migration status, language access,
acculturation issues.
We also look forward to the premi
of C4: Chinese Culture Center Cinem
a series screening independent Chin
documentaries. C4 seeks to bring
our community a discussion of conte
porary issues facing China, issues s
as the vast economic, social, cultu
and political changes of the 21st c
tury. What affects China is relevant
only to the Chinese community here
the Bay Area, but also ripples to
rest of the world, even in Falls COregon. (Oregon, by the way, is
largest exporter of grass seed to Chin
I hope you will join us this spring
summer at the Chinese Culture Cen
Blake and I will be married in June
Portland, Oregon. After that, I hope
bring my in-laws back to the Bay A
for a jellyfish pizza.

Present Tense Continues to Showcase Young Artists
By Abby Chen
Currently on exhibit in the gal-
lery is Present Tense, Artwork
by Emerging Chinese Ameri-
can Artists. This exhibit, pre-
sented in partnership with
Kearny Street Workshop, is
likely the first of its kind to
promote young Chinese-
Americans' artistic VISIOn.
Present Tense shows a layer of
expression springing from a
rich Chinese culture, a layer
that is a continuation of the
Chinese experience. We hope
Present Tense, through visual
art, can connect inter-generations in Chinese com-
munities.
Due to conflict of aesthetic
experiences between their eth-
nic homeland and adopted en-
vironment, descendants of im-
migrants have discovered new
soil and context. As demon-
-'. .!. . .!__,_._._,. ._,_._,--'--'-"-"-'-"~ strated in their artwork, young
Chinese Americans have gen-
erated a brand new way of self-
Artwork entitled Unomao by Niana Liu
expression, and formed their uniq
cognitive process as well as cultu
morphology. Moreover, they activ
seek meaning in a densely connect
modern world and externalize th
point of view.
The young Chinese American artis
vision is audacious, unconvention
and expansive. They intensively co
municate and interact with the Ame
can mainstream art world and As
American community. Their works
injected with a strong component
both local insight and global influenc
Since the exhibit opening, we have
tracted some new audiences to the cter; one of these is KQED's Gall
Crawl. KQED not only featured
exhibit, but also helped us reach ou
a much broader community. We h
our exhibit will develop the recogniti
and inclusion of Chinese American
ists, bringing more exposure to Chin
traditional and contemporary cultu
diversity. The Present Tense exh
will be on display at CCC's gallery
til May 19,2007.

Cheers to Muses Debut
By Abby Chen
Chinese Culture Center is proud to
work with the Asian American WomenArtists Association (AAWAA) to bring
this exhibit to CCC gallery. Cheers to
Muses curated by Cynthia Tom, show-
cases work by select visual artists and
writers from the anthology in tribute to
the muses who have inspired their
work. Exhibiting artists include: Cyn-
thia Tom, Amy Lam, Christina Mazza,'
Susan Almazol, Lenore Chinn, Kay
Kang, and Terry Acebo Davis. Writers
include: Nancy Hom, Vanessa Merina,
Olivia Boler, and Anh-Hoa ThiNguyen.
What distinguishes this unique anthol-
ogy from many others are the moving
dedications, written by the contributors,
to non-familial Asian American women
whose lives or works have influenced
and inspired their own. These heartfelt
affirmations are a testament to the pow-
erful influence these muses have had on
the artists and writers, and remind us
that we are part of a continuum of the
