The beautiful architectural remains of Palmyra, which have been shockingly destroyed in recent months by the war in Syria, are well known in the West. However, the equally fascinating Hellenistic and Roman site of Dura Europos is little known, despite its exquisite remains, including examples of early Christian art and architecture, as well as well-preserved synagogues.
