description

At the Red Hat Forum in Antwerp (2014), Wilbert Van Cromvoirt (CAW) and Peter Dens presented the challenges CAW Antwerp faced when merging 3 organizations with both Linux and Windows environments. By choosing Open Source and RHEV, they lowered their TCO and created a more manageable environment.

HOW

Page 5: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

• Two systems: Windows & Linux• Two IT-experts in the organization (Windows & Linux)• Huge differences in IT-culture

HOW

Page 6: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

Our wish: Integrate the best of the three systems and a bit more…

Kangaroot analysed the situation (contracts, know-how, applications), and suggested a technical solution

WHAT WE FOUND

Page 8: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

WHAT WE FOUND

• 3 Organisations

• 1 Windows environment – outsourced

• 1 Linux environment - in house -

self built – server per location

• limited functions

• 2 FTE system admins

• Good & bad in both setups

• No clear visions or goals

Page 9: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

WHAT WE WANTED

Page 10: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

• 1 Platform• Re-use the existing Thin Client idea of CAW De Terp – Lower TCO

– Easier to manage with small team

• Open Source • Bring down the amount of applications• End User Policies

WHAT WE WANTED

WHAT WE BUILD

Page 12: CAW & Kangaroot: Choosing Open Source & RHEV

WHAT WE BUILD

● Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization ● Zimbra Groupware (migrate away from

Exchange) ● Re-Use Windows environment in

Belgacom Datacenter (until end of contract)

- Only for windows apps - Restricted via End User Policies
