YEARS OF EMPOWERING YOUTH & INSPIRING POSSIBILITY

ANNUAL BENEFIT FOR KIDS APRIL 2016

2

For 30 years, we’ve made it our mission to transform young people’s lives through the power of art.

We’ve put creativity to work—helping thousands of NYC kids realize a love of learning, aspire to success in the workplace and stand out as leaders in their communities.

Yet our work is just beginning.

We invite you to join us in imagining a brighter future for the youth of New York City.

Tonight, we look forward to what’s ahead.

Cheers to the next 30 years!

DEVELOPING CREATIVE ART WORKS

5

Creative art works!

Each year, we touch thousands of young lives with creative youth development services. On subsequent pages of this journal, you will read compelling statistics that demonstrate why that matters. But, in all truthfulness, charts and graphs are not what get me out of bed every morning. I simply can’t imagine a New York City, let alone a world, in which kids do not have the opportunity to make art. For me, developing an appreciation of beauty is a way to think about how the world could be and to inspire us to make our dreams reality.

There is both a rigor and a freedom to all art-making at CAW – we foster a sense of investment and ownership in the art and help develop a sense of personal agency with all our programs, from our Saturday art workshops for elementary school kids to our large-scale public art programs employing youth apprentices. We outline the tenets of social justice, draw on emotions, and paint a language of critical thinking that spans across learning disciplines.

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, and contemplate our future, I would like to thank all of you, and there are many, who have helped us empower youth and inspire possibility. I am humbled and grateful for all of your support.

Brian RicklinExecutive Director and CEO

THE CHALLENGE:WHY THE ARTS MATTER NOW, MORE THAN EVER, FOR YOUNG, UNDERSERVED NEW YORKERS

Sources:1. National Center for Children in Poverty2. Citizen’s Committee for the Children of New York3. National Endowment for the Arts4. America’s Promise Alliance

In the US, 41% of children between ages 12 and 17 live in low-income families¹

In NYC’s under-resourced neighborhoods, 45% of children live in poverty²

Impoverished teenagers without access to arts education are 5 times more likely to drop out of school³

The graduation rate of students in urban school districts is just 54%—that’s 19% lower than their suburban counterparts⁴

7

OUR ANSWER:WE RECOGNIZE THE IMPACT CREATIVITY AND ARTS PROGRAMMING CAN HAVE:

That’s why we empower young people who would otherwise lack access through free dynamic arts experiences that incorporate creative expression, academic enrichment and community engagement.

We put creative art to work, helping young people develop the personal and professional skills to meaningfully shape their futures for the better.

8th grade and high school students with high levels of arts engagement were 20-30% more likely to aspire to college⁵

Low-income high-school students with rich experiences in the arts were more than 3 times as likely to earn a BA⁶

A survey of 1,500 CEOs found that creativity was the most sought-after trait in ensuring the future success of their businesses⁷

Dear Friends:

I am proud to lend my support and congratulations to Creative Art Works for their thirty years of extraordinary work. I would also like to extend my congratulations to this year’s honorees; Neil J. Goldmacher, Marcia Sells, and Benjamin Lev, for their commitment and dedication to education, the arts and civic responsibility.

Creative Art Works has accomplished a great deal in the last thirty years. CAW empowers young people through art programming every day, by promoting creative expression and community engagement, that also serves to enrich their lives academically. Creative Art Works improves the lives of thousands of New York City’s under-served youth each year, fostering a profound connection between themselves, their art and their community, while teaching them life-altering technical and developmental skills.

Once again, I would like to thank and congratulate all the honorees as well as Creative Art Works for their years of successfully engaging young people creatively, while teaching them marketable skills that will help ensure a brighter future for themselves as well and the community as a whole.

Sincerely,

Mark LevineCouncil Member7th District, Manhattan

OUR STAFF IS CLOSELY CONNECTED WITH THE ARTS AND THE CAW MISSION

Brian Ricklin, Executive Director and CEO“Two pivotal experiences in my formative years inspired my commitment to creative youth development — working on a mural with underserved youth and teaching theater to inmates in a maximum-security prison. I am grateful to lead the CAW family, because all the talented people in this organization share my passion for the arts and social justice.”

Michelle Yun-Hee Proffit, Program Operations Manager“The other day I saw a youth painting with watercolors. There were no rules involved, no learned technique. Instead it was a blip here, a fanned stroke there as colors swirled and drops of water hit the paper casually. I saw freedom and constructive learning in this one moment. My work at CAW is to ensure all young minds have an opportunity to experience such moments.”

Karen Jolicoeur, Director of Development“In addition to leading me to New York, to my husband, and to some of my dearest friends, the performing arts have taught me to dig deep, confront fear, strive for perfection, accept imperfection, communicate, give and take, and to literally and figuratively step into another person’s shoes to see through her eyes.”

Lance Paladino, Program Manager“The process of creating artwork taught me how to ask questions.”

16

Scott Lucas, Marketing & Communications Manager“What I learned from teaching art to middle school students is that you don’t have to be good at it to love it. When kids make art, they don’t think about whether it’s good or bad, they just get caught up in the joy of creation.”

Jill Goldstein, Office Manager“As a social worker working in homeless shelters, I saw the impact that art has on kids. Some days it was just for fun – other days, it was the only way they could express the myriad challenges in their lives. Whether or not they were verbal, or had diminished capacity, whatever the circumstances of their lives, art was an outlet. Art matters.”

Christina Mozumdar, Program Associate“Growing up, my parents gave me piano lessons and encouraged me to join a children’s choir. Music helped me find myself as an individual. I continue to observe the ways that art and culture influence us as a society. Every day at CAW, I witness first-hand the impact that arts programs have on the youth we serve.”

STORIES OF EMPOWERMENT AND INSPIRATION

In memoriam

Brookie Maxwell—painter, sculptor and curator—dedicated her life to bringing people together through the healing and inspirational power of art.

Her involvement in Creative Art Works “had a huge impact on the kids because someone came along and was interested in what they had to say,” remembered her son, Ellis Donlin Maxwell.⁸

The vision that she established as co-founder of Creative Art Works endures today, and we’ve made it our mission to ensure her impact lives on for future generations.

TONIGHT’S HONOREES

Benjamin LevFounding Principal, Hamilton Grange Middle School, an education partner

Ben Lev loved drawing and painting classes growing up in Las Vegas, NV. After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in English Literature in 2004, Ben spent two years teaching math as part of the first Teach for America corps ever placed in Brooklyn. He earned his M.S.T in Special Education at Pace University in 2006 and an M.S. in Educational Leadership from City College in 2011.

Ben collaborated with his fellow math teachers at MS 324 in Washington Heights to create a curriculum that supported significantly improved scores for 8th graders on the New York State Mathematics Test. In 2010, Ben became the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at PS 192 in Hamilton Heights, where he and fellow educator Paul Manzi co-created a curriculum that resulted in a nearly 35% increase in student progress on the NYS Math Test and a 30% increase in ELA scores. While at PS 192, Ben embraced the CAW partnership, serving the elementary school children.

In 2014, Ben founded Hamilton Grange Middle School. Creative Art Works partnered with Hamilton Grange that same year to offer in-school and after-school arts programs.

Ben is a diehard baseball fanatic. He and his wife are on a quest to see a game in all 30 Major League stadiums in the US and Canada.

Andrew D. LevinPresident and Chairman

It takes many brushstrokes to make a painting; likewise, it takes the efforts of many individuals, all working towards a common goal, to build a vibrant organization. I am humbled by the thought that Creative Art Works has been around long enough now that there are hundreds of people who have played a part in conveying us to our 30th year. We are grateful to all those who’ve contributed to the success of our mission, whether as a donor, an employee, a volunteer or a programming partner. A special thanks to our tireless staff who puts their heart, soul, and talent into making a difference every day.

I would like to thank my fellow directors. This year, I am pleased to welcome three new members – Rich Morris, Steven Soutendijk and Eric Withrow. I would also like to congratulate two of our longstanding directors who have assumed important leadership roles. Frank DiBrino is our new Secretary and Rick Morris (yes, we have two board members named Richard Morris) is now Treasurer.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are grateful for the selfless contributions of tonight’s Benefit Co-chairs and Honorees. I wish to thank Neil Goldmacher for his longstanding support and his outstanding job of fundraising. And I am grateful to Marcia Sells, who championed our partnership with the Columbia University School of the Arts and helped us build bridges between the university and the communities of Manhattanville and West Harlem. Finally, we are pleased to recognize the achievements of Benjamin Lev, Founding Principal of our programming partner Hamilton Grange Middle School. Ben recognizes that a well-rounded education is vital to success in academics, in business, and in life.

Creative Art Works has touched more than 30,000 lives in 30 years, yet that awe-inspiring number is only the beginning. With your continued support, we can count on a bright future.

Yours truly,

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

26

“ In school we learn math, we learn science, we learn the textbook facts, but art is my teacher for the subject called life.

When I am going through tough times, listening to music or seeing a reflection of my emotions through a piece of art always lends me spiritual strength, because it is a confirmation that I’m not alone.”

THANKING OUR SUPPORTERS

28

Our heartfelt thanks to the individuals and businesses that have helped make our year and this event possible.

No organization makes it to the thirty-year mark without a community of believers, supporters, contributors, hopers, dreamers, and doers. We are truly grateful, humbled and delighted with ours.

We’d love for you to be part of it. There are many ways you can get involved. Commission a work of public art. Become a donor. Sponsor a program. Volunteer. Any way you choose will make an immediate impact. More than 76% of all revenue goes to direct program expenses. Each and every contribution makes a tangible difference.

“ I know Creative Art Works makes a difference in the lives of young people, because I have been a member of the CAW family since I was 14 years old. Creative Art Works was the first organization where people encouraged me and supported my creativity and personal development. They recognized my potential. I am now 27 years old, and recently, I brought my son to his first Creative Art Works Saturday program. I want him to experience that same positive environment, so he grows up to be confident and loves to learn.”
