Orsemus B. and Frances (Mullen) Boyd (original chalk drawing of Frances Boyd in possession of Jeffrey Howard Boyd of Boonton, New Jersey)

Orsemus Bronson Boyd, son of Henry and Eliza (Bronson) Boyd was born in 1844 near Croton (now called Treadwell), New York. At the start of the Civil War he enlisted in the Eighty-Ninth Regiment, New York Volunteers with his father and older brother Amos who died in the field of battle. In 1863 he accepted an appointment at West Point. Orsemus' grandparents were Amos Boyd and Celestia (Steele) Boyd. Amos was the son of William and Marjary (Taylor) Boyd of E. Springfield, Massachusetts. William's parents were John and Margaret (Long) Boyd who were married in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts on 11 April 1731. John is believed to be son of Capt. James Boyd born 1669 in Scotland.

Orsemus Boyd was unjustly accused of theft while at West Point and ostracised by fellow cadets for years until he was exonerated by the admission of guilt of a fellow cadet named JOHN JOSEPH CASEY who committed the deed. On his sick-bed, in a delirium, Casey confessed to the crime of planting the evidence which convicted Boyd. Casey died less than a year later by a bullet from a gun of one of his own men. His confession was made to a fellow Cadet named Hamilton and Hamilton didn't tell anyone about it for several years.

Orsemus graduated in 1867 and was appointed a second lieutenant in the Eighth Cavalry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1868 and remained in that rank for fourteen years, receiving appointment as Captain in 1882. After a brief illness while on campaign against Geromino, he died at a military camp near Grafton, New Mexico on July 23, 1885, at the age of forty-one.

"Immediately after graduation from West Point in 1867, Orsemus B. BOYD married Frances Anne MULLEN, a woman who would prove his equal in stamina and courage for eighteen years of army life in the West. She accompanied him on bruising and treacherous journeys across the Sierra Nevada and Mojave Desert to live in some of the most remote outposts the army saw fit to garrison: Camp Halleck in Nevada, Camp Date Creek in Arizona, Fort Stanton, Fort Union and Fort Bayard in New Mexico and Fort Clark in Texas. Her home in Nevada was a two-room tent with a barley sack carpet. The better part of social life in Fort Clark was the exchange of grievances. They eventually had three children: Mabel, James, and Henry Boyd.

"Intensely proud of her husband, Mrs. Boyd endured much for his sake: severe heat and cold, drudgery, a poor and monotonous diet, frustration, disappointment, malaria and filth. By the time she reached Texas she had become so accustomed to making much out of little that she could prepare custards and other dainties in a tent stove. "Her depictions of army life, of the landscapes of the Southwest, and of rough western travel are exceptional, but no less so is her portrait of herself as the steadfastly loyal wife of an unjustly dishonored officer. Her rage and bitterness at their treatment by the army were gradually tempered by her affection and respect for other army wives, her own sense of duty, and her deep love for the sky, land, and rivers of the Southwest."

*He had served in the Civil war along with his father Henry Boyd and his older brother Amos Boyd, who was killed in action.

There is a reprint available by University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1982. Bison Press reprint of original edition of 1894). 370 pages.

BOYD, FRANCES ANNE MULLEN (1848-1926).

Frances (Fannie) Boyd, writer, was born in New York City on February 14, 1848. Her father owned a bakery there, and the family was well-to-do. Her mother died when she was quite young, and her father remarried. Frances married Lt. Orsemus Bronson Boyd on October 9, 1867, in New York City. For the next eighteen years she followed her officer-husband, a graduate of West Point, from one duty station to another, making a home for themselves and, eventually, their three children, at frontier posts in Nevada, Arizona,New Mexico, and Texas. Boyd's military career spanned the post- Civil War Indian wars, years when travel was dangerous and living conditions primitive.

In December 1875 Mrs. Boyd and their daughter and son accompanied Lieutenant Boyd to a new assignment at Fort Clark, Texas. The post, located forty miles from the Rio Grande near the site of present-day Brackettville, guarded the San Antonio-El Paso road. For six months in 1879-80 the Boyds lived at Fort Duncan, a small garrison at Eagle Pass, where troops patrolled the international boundary. After two of the children were stricken with malaria in 1881, Frances Boyd took them all back to New York. The family remained separated while Boyd served at various stations. In 1885 Frances returned to Fort Clark, her husband's current post. Boyd was soon ordered to New Mexico, where he died, on July 23, 1885.

Left a widow at age thirty-seven, Frances Boyd took up residence in Washington, D.C., where she had social connections, and later lived in New York City. Her descendants remember that she traveled extensively in Europe. Her Cavalry Life in Tent and Field, a tribute to her husband that describes her experiences in the West as an officer's wife, was published in 1894. It is considered one of the finest of the genre. Early in the new century, perhaps in 1908, she bought a house and land in Boonton, New Jersey, where she lived for the rest of her life. She died in Elizabeth, New Jersey,on May 2, 1926.

Hello,

Just stumbled across your listing on Orsemus Boyd. I am the ggggrandson of Orsemus Boyd. I have some of his personal papers and other documents. Is this something that would interest you?

Charles R. Novak ----------------------------------- Message 2

Hello,

I viewed some of your information; very impressive. I just recently ordered the Springfield, MA vital records. I ordered them for a different family line, but will look for Boyds in these records. Any request?

I also have more detailed information about Orsemus Boyd's ancestors. I'm not sure if Amos Boyds wife was Celesta Steele. I have some records that state her as Celesta Adams.

A few years ago I was in contact with an individual descendant from Reuben Boyd and Rebecca Bond. He sent me alot of information. Interested?

Mr. Boyd,

There are other descendants in Boonton, New Jersey. One, Jeffrey Howard Boyd has the original chalk drawling of Frances Mullen Boyd. This is the one you have on your website.

The other Boyd person I've been in contact with is

Mary Brewer [email protected] RD 5, Box 353 Latrobe, PA 15650

She is descendant from Lavelle Henry Boyd, Orsemus Boyds half brother.

Unfortunately not much Boyd stuff survived in my family. I do have some of Orsemus Boyds personal papers including a letter written about the scandal and his promotion to Captain and the certificate.

DESCENDANTS OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS IN BRAZIL

Since the end of the War Between the States, much had been written and said by all those who wish to find the truth behind America's bloodiest and most disheartening war. Few realize that this War took more lives than all of America's other wars together. The War Between the States took more than 600,000 lives and ruined the Southern economy. The scars would take decades to heal. The immigration of Southerners to Brazil following the War is an interesting and curious event connected with the War. This immigration was a direct result of the outcome of the War. This wave of Immigration, which may have included up to 9,000 people, has left in Brazil a community of descendants of Southern immigrants. They are identified as the "Confederados". The descendants are all over the country, but the largest community, and by far de most important is located in the State of São Paulo. This community, founded by the Southerners, has grown into the town of Americana. Americana and its older mother city, Vila Santa Bárbara (today Santa Bárbara 'Oeste), a few miles apart, are the gravity center of the community of Southern descendants in Brazil. Since 1954, the Fraternity of American Descendants has held headquarters there. For more information on these Southern immigrants go to this web site:

CIVIL WAR FACTS

THE WORLD ALMANAC AND BOOK OF FACTS, (my copy is 1997) shows for the North: Total served = 2,213,363; Battle deaths = 140,414; Other deaths = 224,097; Wounds not mortal = 281,881; Total casualties = 646,392. Confederacy: Total served (est) = 600,00 to 1,500,000; Battle deaths = 74,524; Other deaths = 59,297; Total deaths = 133,921.

THE UNIVERSAL STANDARD ENCYCLOPEDIA, pub Unicorn Publishers, Inc., New York, (mine is edition of 1954) says, as its last paragraph: "Union forces during the war numbered over 2, 500,000. Total Union casualties were 339,528, of which number 110,070 wre killed in baattle or died of wounds, 224,586 died of disease, and 24,872 of other causes. The total number of Confederate troops in the war is estimated by various historians at fom 600,000 to 900,000. Confederate killed and wounded are estimated at about 134,000. The defeat of the Confederacy was nearly inevitable. The resistance of the agricultural South, skillful and fierce though it was, had to break before the superior resources in men, materials, and money of the industrial North.

When I was in the 8th grade (1925-6) I was living in Florida, and learned that in the South it was called the "War Between the States," or the "War of Secession," NOT the "Civil" War. But I had grown, and during high school returned to New England, where we called them Civil War Veterans, or the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) as long as there were any of them left to march or to ride in open cars in our local parades.

Alert:There is a Boyd family group in California calling themselves

House of Boyd Society (HOBS). They have a web site and say they publish a quarterly

newsletter but they haven't mailed anything to members since 2002. I keep getting emails from people telling me how displeased they are with HOBS. Oneperson sent me an email telling me she sent in a Life Membership fee to them ($150.00). After I let her know they haven't published since '02 and because of

her insistance she got her money back. All I can say is before you send money to join a genealogy group is to make sure they provide the service they say they do.

In this case I would ask for a sample copy of a current newsletter. For a history of the HOBS see: http://clanboyd.info/HouseofBoyd/

Boyds of Kilmarnock

Founded on Wood's Edition of Sir Robert Douglas's Peerage of Scotland

Edited by Sir James Balfour Paul Lord Lyon King of Arms, 1880

This electronic edition copyrighted by Richard G. Boyd (C) 1989

Owing to a certain similiarty in their arms, old writers have assumed that the Boyds were a branch of the royal house of Stuart (Stewart). Crawfurd, writing in 1716, says "The common bearings of the Boyds and Stewarts have given ground to a conjecture that they are branched from the Royal Family of Stewart". Nisbet a few years later, says, "The first of the sirname of Boyd was Robert, son of Simon, third son of Allan, second Lord High Steward of Scotland, who died in 1153, which Robert is designed in the charters of Paisley nephew to Walter the son of Allan Dapifer, Great Steward of Scotland", and Chalmers adds that Simon, who was a witness to a foundation charter of the monastery of Paisley 1160, followed his brother into Scotland. So the story grew, and Wood accordingly begins his pedigree of the Boyds with the said Simon, and on the strengh of this the descent has been accepted by subsequent writers. That Walter the Steward had a brother Simon, and that he witnessed the foundation charter of Paisley in 1160 as Simon, frater Walteri filii Allani, is not disputed, but this charter was executed, not at Paisley, but at Fotheringay in Northhamptonshire, and not only is there no evidence that he ever subsequently came to Scotland, but Mr. J.H. Round appears to prove conclusively that this Simon was only uterine brother to Walter, and that he was the Simon "de Caisneto" alias "de Norfolc," who held the Manor of Mileham. Were Nisbet's statement, that the first recorded Robert Boyd is designed nephew of Walter the Steward in the cartulary of Paisley capable of proof, then it would establish the connection, though not necessarily a descent from Simon, but no such entry is to be found, and, without further evidence in support of it, this descent cannot be accepted.

The first reliable information we have of the family is as vassals of the de Morevilles in the regality of Largs, and it may be that their progenitor accompanied the first de Moreville to Scotland and obtained a grant of lands from him. However this may be, the fact that the Boyds were early proprietors in Renfrew, and possesed the barony of Nodsdale and several other lands of good value in the reign of Alexander III (1249-86) is attested by a charter, seen by Mylne, granted by "Sir John Erskine, knight, "Johanni filio suo, juniori, quem (uxore) sua, filia Gilronani, procreavit totam terram suam ex australi partae aquae de Goghow," which is bounded with the lands of Robert the Boyd" The first person of the name of Boyd on actual record would seem to be:

Sir Robert Boyd, said to have been so called from the Celtic BOIDH, signifying fair or yellow. e as Dominus Robertus de Boyd miles, was witness to a contract between Bryce de Eglington and the village of Irvine in 1205. Robert Dictus Boyd is mentioned in a charter by Sir John Erskine of the lands of Halkhill 1262. He is said to have greatly distinguished himself at the battle of Largs, 2 October 1263, and to have been rewarded by Alexander III with a grant of lands in Cunningham.

Robert Boyd occurs in the Ragman Roll as taking the oath of the allegiance to Edward I at Berwick-on-Tweed 28 August 1296. He is said to have afterwards joined Sir William Wallace in his gallant attempt to assert the independence of his country.

Sir Robert Boyd, the faithful companion of Robert the Bruce in the War of Independence. A Robert Boyd attended the King's escheators from Dumbarton to Renfrew with Sir John Walleys and their men at arms, October 1304, and Sir Robert de Boyt was taken prisoner by the English in the Castle of Kildrummie shortly

before 13 September 1306, a Duncan Boyd having been captured and hanged 4 August previously. Robert Boyd joined in a letter to the King of France, 16 November 1308, and he was one of the Scottish commanders at the battle of Bannockburn 4 June 1314. For his faithful adherence to his cause, he had a grant from King Robert to 'Roberto Boyd, militi, dilecto et fideli nostro,' of the lands of Kilmarnock, Bondington, and Hertschaw, which were John de Baliol's; the lands of ilbryd and Ardnel (Portincross), which were Godfrey de Ross's son to the deceased Reginald de Ross; all the land which was William de Mora's, in the tenement of Dalry; with seven acres of land, which were Robert de Ross's in the tenement of Ardnel; all erected into an entire and free barony to be held of the King. He had also a charter of the lands of Nodelles dale; and a third, granting Hertschaw in free forest. He was one of the guarantors of a treaty of peace with the English 1323. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Halidon hill, 19 July 1333, and died not long afterwards. He had three sons.....(cont.).........(New members of Clan Boyd Society, International will receive an electronic copy of this "Peerage of Scotland" 1880, with their membership. Family Finder:

The Boyd Family By Charles Richard Novak

July 21, 2001

Forward

This document is to provide information on the Boyd family. Most of this information comes from the works of Francis Orsemus Boyd, the grandson of Orsemus Bronson Boyd. However, a lot of it is my own work.

For more information on Orsemus B. Boyd, please refer to the book, "Calvary Life in Tent and Field," by Mrs. Orsemus B. Boyd.

The Boyd Family

1. William Boyd was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on March 15, 1750. He is the first Boyd I know of in the direct family line. He was a Corporal and "patriot soldier in the Revolution," having enlisted in 1776. In January of 1777 he married Margary Taylor, of Newington, Connecticut. She was born on March 7, 1758. She supposedly came from a long line of Taylor's in Connecticut. William and Margary left Cambridge with three children and settled in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where seven more children were born. William died in West Springfield on May 25, 1840 and Margary in 1834. William and Margary had ten children. The first three were born in Cambridge, the rest in West Springfield. Children:

2. Margary Boyd 3. Amos Boyd B. 1785 4. Huldah Boyd 5. Betsey Boyd B. May 22, 1789 6. Reuben Boyd B. December 7, 1791 7. Elisha Boyd B. March 13, 1794 8. Eunice Boyd B. June 7, 1796 9. Julius Boyd B. April 7, 1801 10. John Boyd B. June 21, 1803 11. Sabra Boyd B. June 23, 1806

3. Amos Boyd (William) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1785, the son of William Boyd and Margary Taylor. He moved to West Springfield, with his parents in 1788. He was married on November 22, 1811 to Celestia Steel. Celestia was born in Massachusetts in 1789. ***NOTE: some sources of information state her maiden name as Adams, mainly Henry Boyd's Pension records and death certificate. Amos was a farmer who in February of 1817 moved to a farm in Croton, now Treadwell, Delaware County, New York. He bought 125 acres of land. Amos died on July 11, 1862. His wife Celestia died on July 21, 1867. Both are buried in Croton Union Cemetery in Treadwell, New York. Children:

12. Henry Boyd B. April 2, 1816 13. Emily Boyd 14. Harriet Boyd 15. Sophronia Boyd

12. Henry Boyd (William, Amos) was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts on April 2, 1816, the son of Amos Boyd and Celestia Steel. At age 18 he started teaching school in Croton, New York. On September 4, 1838 he married Eliza Jane Bronson, daughter of Orsemus Bronson and Hester Perlop. Eliza was born in 1816 in Treadwell, New York and died on July 1, 1850 and is buried in Croton Union Cemetery. They had two children

the Civil war when he joined the Eighty-ninth New York Volunteer infantry on September 1, 1861. He served until July 1, 1863, when he was appointed a Cadet in the United States Military Academy. He saw active service and was mentioned for gallantry at Roanoke Island, North Carolina. He entered the West Point Military Academy and graduated in the class of 1867. During this time he was accused of stealing money. This was perpetrated by John Joseph Casey. Orsemus Boyd was found innocent of this crime, but continued to go through West Point. He was ridiculed by his classmates and forced to wear a sign that called him a coward and a thief. On his death bed, Casey finally confessed to the crime, thus clearing Orsemus' name. ***NOTE: This scandal is explained in detail in the beginning of "Calvary Life in Tent and Field". On October 9, 1867 at the residence of James H. Gibney, Orsemus was married to Frances Anne Mullen, daughter of John Mullen and Frances Land, by Reverend Hasbronck DuBois. He served at Camp Halleck, Nevada from November 15, 1867 to January of 1869. He was then promoted to First lieutenant. During this time he was assigned to California and New Mexico. On June 26, 1882 he was promoted to Captain of the 8th Calvary. During this time he did frontier duty at San Antonio, Texas and at Ft. Clark, Texas.
