Raise your glasses on high! Tonight we celebrate!” “What?,” you say, “What’s going on? Did I miss something?” No, no. You didn’t miss it yet, but put it on the calendar: Riverfront Art Gallery’s 8th Anniversary celebration, Saturday, November 14, 5:00 to 9:00 PM, with nibbles and libations and music by Cory Herve. In addition, several of the 50 artists currently represented will be on hand to chat during the evening. A raffle drawing is scheduled for 8:00, so be sure to get there on time! You must be present to win. Gallery co- owners, Lance Kuehne and Jerrie Jerné will be delighted to see you. Our featured artists always give us cause to celebrate as well. Regionally known oil painter Henry White, in his show “Oaks of Our Time”, will treat us to a tribute to the stately oaks that grace so much of our Sonoma landscape. Concerned about suburban sprawl, winery expansion, drought, global warming, and the dreaded sudden oak death, Henry explains, “Before it became ‘wine country’, the Petaluma area was and still is a landscape of cattle grazing, hay fields, and ranches set in the oak savanna and wooded hills of northern California. I love these landscapes, coast live oak trees, and the other flora and wildlife around me. I feel a sense of urgency in capturing the aspects of the trees and hills as they are now, because, as Bob Dylan said, ‘the times they are a changin’.” Henry likens creativity to a quickening of the spirit and a rising joy. Do come to share the spirit and joy of Henry’s tribute to the majestic oak. The second featured artist of this Late Fall Show is photographer Lance Kuehne. Always the consummate craftsman, Lance makes few alterations to his photographs, just a bit of contrast or color adjustment that the flatness of digital imaging makes necessary. But surprise, surprise! Lance has been bitten by the creativity bug! He began experimenting with filters in Instagram and voila! a new photographic frontier opened to him. His featured show, “Diverging Paths”, will celebrate his divergence onto this new path with a series of images all of which have been altered to some degree--to enhance a feeling of age, suggest the intensity of sunset, or create a mood. Although he won’t abandon his old approach, he will alternate between artistic documentation and evocative interpretation. He says, “I am freely modifying the image to better show what I am trying to say. After all, I’m an artist, not a journalist.” Riverfront Art Gallery is at 132 Petaluma Boulevard North in downtown Petaluma. Regular hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, 11 AM–6 PM; Friday and Saturday, 11 AM–8 PM. Closed Monday and Tuesday. For more information call 707.775.4278 or visit riverfrontartgallery.com. S tudies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. This year, let’s ensure our children start school with all the tools they need to help them succeed. To that end, this Fall, the Sonoma County Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to celebrate a Library Card Sign-up Drive—a time to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all–a free library card. And—for a limited time—you can get the coolest library card in the world! A limited edition Charlie Brown and Snoopy library card is being issued starting this September. “We are really excited about this awesome library card. These are lovable characters who appeal to all ages and promote literacy,” says Mathew Rose, Branch Manager of the Sebastopol Regional Library. The Charlie Brown and Snoopy library cards are available at your local library in limited quantities. To continue the Library Card Sign-up Drive fun, the library is hosting a Selfie With Snoopy campaign. Take a picture of yourself with your library card at your favorite Peanuts statue or at the library in front of a Snoopy or Sally READ poster. Post your selfie to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtags #snoopy and #sonomacountylibrary. Anyone who has a library card, both the regular and limited library cards alike, can access a wealth of resources that support academic achievement. For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit any Sonma County Library in person or visit the library online at sonomalibrary.org.
