2. Discuss the following paragraph with students. Highlight or underline the causal indicators that are used and discuss what causes things to happen. (some examples are below the paragraph)
Allen suddenly awoke because his alarm clock was ringing loudly. Before leaving for work he created a “to do” list. If he didn’t make a list he would surely forget something he might need. Since making his own lunch was unusual he put this as number 1 on his list. He would need to make his lunch so he could remain at work through his lunch break. Next on his list was remembering his gym clothes and tennis shoes. Then if he was running late he could skip stopping at home first. With his list complete he was then ready for his day.
! What caused Allen to awake? (alarm clock) ! Why did Allen make a “to do” list? (so he wouldn’t forget things) ! What caused Allen to be ready for his day? (his completed list)
3. Review the definition of cause (why something happens) and effect (what happens). Reinforce that causal indicators help readers identify when a cause and effect relationship is occurring. Hand out the “Cause and Effect” sheet for students to work on independently.
