FROM CHALLENGE TO VISION

Societal Challenge

Often, SCAD students living in residence halls and off-campus housing throw away, rather than donate their unwanted items to Goodwill. These things can be sold to generate revenue that will help those with disabilities and other barriers to employment find jobs and live independently.

TODAY FUTURE

FROM CHALLENGE TO VISION

Goals

We wish to generate excitement and a greater awareness of Goodwill’s mission among our students. Although SCAD and Goodwill have been working together for some time, our goal is to create a more efficient and rewarding donation process.

Vision

We envision well-crafted marketing campaign and sustainable logistical plan that can be carried out each spring with relative ease. Both SCAD and Goodwill will benefit by being able to capitalize on positive PR that shows the amazing impact that this initiative has on Savannah and the surrounding community.

The placement of the donation bins may be inconvenient or simply perceived as too far away. Also, students need help moving heavy items.

SCAD Students may not be aware of the mission of Goodwill. Communications have primarily been through print and word-of-mouth; digital and social media have not been used.

Currently there is no positive reinforcement given to students, e.g. a tax deduction certificate, or a coupon for a free snack or soft drink.

The majority of donations are made within the 24-hour time-frame that occurs before students are required to vacate the dorms. This busy period creates storage and logistical challenges.

The bins are too small to handle large items or large amounts of donations at one time. They may also present theft and safety issues.

PRIMARY SERVICE CONCEPTS

A Goodwill Student Assistants program, where student volunteers (perhaps from SERVE) assist fellow students in the donation process in exchange for either extra time to move out or a cash incentive.

Temporary storage PODs will be placed in convenient locations around the residence halls so that exhausted students won’t have to go very far to donate.

The Goodwill Design Challenge, the campaign kick-off event, is designed to generate excitement and awareness of the Goodwill and it’s mission among our students. Cash prizes will be awarded.

A coordinated marketing campaign that includes print, digital, and social media.

An off-campus pick-up program, where students notify Goodwill by text or email that they would like to make a donation. Goodwill will send trucks to pick-up donations.

PERSONA CHRIS

Chris is currently a freshman but will be a sophomore in the upcoming school year.

He lives at the W at the Hive residence hall where there are two people per room.

Since his parents live only 4.5 hours away, they drive down to help him load and

unload all of his belongings during fall quarter and spring quarter. Although a nice

guy, Chris’ attitude towards donating his unwanted items is relative indifference. At

the end of the school year, he usually feels drained because of finals, so donating

to Goodwill is the last thing on his mind.

After Chris comes back from spring break, he sees posters for the Goodwill Design Challenge at the W at the Hive residence hall.

Interested in the competion and prizes, he goes online to find out more.

He decides to team up with his roommate Stephen on the 3-D competition.

On the day of the event they arrive at the Goodwill tent to pick up a copy of the design brief, sticker, and their materials.

Winners’ artworks are displayed in Goodwill storefront windows, in the cafeteria, and online. Chris & Steven’s artwork will appear on PODs that will be placed during the move out days

He and Steven immediately begin working on the sculpture in their room.

After they complete their project, Chris posts a picture of it on Facebook. They submit it for judging and wait to find out the results.

When they are announced as winners, they are elated; the prize is awesome! Their friends are excited for them and spread the good news!

PERSONA XIAO MING

Xiao Ming is a senior international student. She lives at Boundary Village which

consists of apartment style housing with fully equipped kitchens. Because she will

be graduating and flying back to China right away, she is in a frantic state. She has

a lot of things such as clothing, kitchenware, home appliances, and art supplies—

she doesn’t know what to do with it all! She is aware of the local Goodwill store,

but still doesn’t know about its mission to help the community.

Xiao was curious to see who won the Goodwill Design Challenge. She goes on the website to check it out.

Coming back from library she sees the Goodwill display window and is impressed by the resourcefulness of the artists and beauty of the art.

She sees a poster about the Cause and Effect Campaign on the bulletin board in the dorm hallway.

A week later she sees a Goodwill donation bin and is reminded that she needs to begin preparing to move.

PERSONA MARY AND NATALIE

Mary is a graduate student who lives in an apartment on Wilmington Island with her roommate Natalie, a Fashion major from Equador. They met at orientation, became friends, and decided to room together—2 years later they cannot believe that Grad school went by so fast. They plan to use the Off-Campus Donation Pick-Up program to dispose of large items and furniture that cannot be taken with them—it’s an easy process. Mary and Natalie regularly shopped for discount clothing at the Goodwill store nearby, but until the “Cause and Effect Campaign,” neither was fully aware of it’s mission and job programs.
