Behavioural problems in dogs are a growing concern for pet owners and
dog carers. Fears and phobias, aggression, separation anxiety, obses-
sive compulsive disorders, cognitive dysfunction and senility are com-
monly encountered by pet owners at home and presented to veterinarians
for diagnosis and advice. Many such conditions have been successfully
managed and treated using behavioural techniques, environmental man-
agement, effective training and at times individually tailored course of
medication. Caulfield South Veterinary Clinic is pleased to launch a new
service to complement our capacity to influence effective outcome in
managing such patients. The new service will be focusing in particular on
canine behavioural issues and aggression. The training aspect will be provided by Mr. Yariv Ben Yosef, the
director of the Centre of Service and Therapy Dogs Australia (CSTDA).
Commencing in December the service will be based on a questionnaire and initial assessment. A corrective
training program will then be set up for each individual dog. This format has been effectively utilized by Yariv
in other countries where he works with veterinarians, helping to resolve canine aggression and other unaccept-
able behavioural issues. Continual monitoring and support will be provided by Dr. Ben-David and the clinic
staff and will be based on the individual treatment as indicated by each case.
Mr. Yariv Ben Yosef is a highly regarded, certified dog trainer who has been working
with canines and dealing with behavioural issues in particular for over 17 years. He has
worked with wolves in the Israeli desert and zoo’s, with army, police and guard dogs as
well as pet dogs. Yariv has developed innovative products and training techniques to
deal with aggressive dogs and is heavily involved with service dogs, those that are
trained to help people with physical, psychological and emotional conditions.
Dr Onn Ben-David and the team at the Caulfield
South Veterinary Clinic are delighted to be associated with the CSTDA and
its team and are looking forward to provide veterinary care and advice on a
wide range of animal health and welfare issues. The training program will
be provided from our new purpose built building at 463 Hawthorn Road,
Caulfield South. Seminars and assessments will be conducted at the clinic
facilities. For any inquiries or bookings please call the clinic on 9528 2525
or contact us by email at [email protected].

Daylight savings allows everyone to enjoy a few extra hours of
sunlight, including our cats. More hours out playing, prowling and ex-
ploring the neighbourhood means more time for your furry friend to get
themselves into trouble. Even if your cat isn’t known to fight, cats are
very territorial and may end up in altercations defending “their”
land from other wandering cats.
The majority of cat abscesses are caused by another cats' teeth or nails.
Cats' mouths contain bacteria and all it takes is one small bite to create
a large infection. If these abscesses are left untreated, they have the
potential to turn into a deep abscess that can require surgical drain-
age.
Prevention is always better than the cure so ensure your cat is in-
doors well before dusk. It can also be useful to examine your cat regu-
larly to pick up any bites or scratches before they become abscesses. If you do find a wound, it is best to bring
them to us as soon as possible so we can initiate antibiotic treatment. Another indication your cat may have an
abscess is a change in eating pattern or being off colour.
Feline Aids (FIV) is a fatal viral disease of cats that is predominantly spread by a cats’ bite. Allowing cats’ ac-
cess to the outdoors and fighting between neighbourhood cats dramatically increases the chances that the cat will
contract the disease.
There is no effective treatment or cure for FIV. An infected cat may remain healthy for a number of years be-
fore the immune system collapses. Fortunately there is a vaccine and we highly recommend cat owners consider
vaccination in order to prevent the disease. Yearly booster vaccinations are recommended once the initial course
of 3 injections is completed.
If you would like more information on FIV or cat abscesses or to book in for the FIV vaccination please contact
us on 9528 2525.
With the holiday season fast approaching many people are planning to go away with their pets. Unfortunately long
trips in a car with a pet may not be the best experience due to car/motion sickness problems. Motion sickness is a
common illness that both humans and animals suffer from and can be very uncomfortable and distressing for both
pet and pet owner. Symptoms often consist of salivating, smack-
ing lips, repetitive swallowing, not accepting treats or food and
vomiting. Pets can, overtime, associate car travel with motion
sickness and consequently develop a fear of it.
If motion sickness is something you think your pet suffers from,
you should make an appointment to see us before going on a trip
again. There are medications available to prevent motion sick-
ness and make travelling and holidays much more enjoyable for
everyone.
If you would like more information about car sickness please
contact the clinic on 9528 2525.
