We are already in week 8 and with only 3 weeks until the end of term. Loads is happening around the school, with tree works scheduled, the old admin getting a facelift, teaching and learning in the classrooms etc. It is set to be just as busy over the next three weeks! OLD ADMIN Work continues in the old admin building this week. The lino is going in today and next week we will have the walls painted in the rear of the building. We then have electricians, plumbers and our trusty GA Les to complete the process over the coming weeks. The aim is to have this room up and running by the end of the term, ready for use by staff and students in term 2. I would like to personally thank all of those parents who helped to clean out the old admin. Linda Hughes, Ben Kinsella, Mim Zariffa, Brett Armstrong, Jo Roughley, Anneriek Favelle and the amazing efforts of Kim Smith whose organisation has been outstanding! If there is anyone available to help move all of the furniture back in again on Friday afternoon, your help would be greatly appreciated. HAWKESBURY LOCAL RADIO As part of the public relations work we have been investigating this term, we have come across a presenter through the Armstrong family who hosts a show on Hawkesbury Local Radio. So far we have managed to secure advertising space on the radio and which you can hear in the mornings and afternoons on 89.9. We are also going to conduct a series of live interviews. The first interview was scheduled for this afternoon, however this had to be postponed. We have re- scheduled the interview for next Thursday afternoon. We will be on between 4.00pm and 7.00pm. Jacob in Year 6 and I will be asked questions in relation to small schools and what they are able to offer the community. We will let you know what time between 4pm and 7pm when we are given more specific information. Make sure you are listening to 89.9 next Thursday! HARMONY DAY Tomorrow is Harmony Day, a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. We have many fun activities planned for the day, including: soccer, poster design, cultural music and food tasting. We hope the students have a great day and will be sure to post some really cool photos on Facebook. PEPPERCORN SERVICES DROP-IN SERVICE The drop-in service run by Peppercorn Family Services is still available in the music room each Wednesday. If you would like to drop in and have a chat, Jackie or one of her lovely colleagues will be available to talk between 2.00pm and 2.30pm. HENNY PENNY CHICKENS The Henny Penny chickens have arrived and we already have 9 chickens running around in the 4/5/6 room. They are extremely cute and the students have been very excited each morning, checking to see if any more have hatched. It is an amazing experience for our students to enjoy and we are very lucky to be able to do this in our school.

We do intend to keep the chickens after the program has finished and need some help to build a chicken run. The Roughleys have very kindly secured a shed for the chickens to be housed in at night and we thank them very much for this. The students have been working hard on designs and are applying for a grant to pay for the construction of a you beaut shed and run, however we would like some help to build a make shift run for them while we wait for our grant application to be seen. If you are able to help, please see the office. PARENT HELPER WEEK At a recent PR meeting we discussed the idea of working bees and decided that it was too much to ask parents to come up on the weekend or during the school day to help out, as people are busy and weekends are a valuable commodity these days. So, we have decided to give people the option of helping out over a week period. Now relax, this does not mean that you have to help out every day of the week! But, if you have some spare time, even if it is just for an hour, we would love your help. We were hoping to use week 10 as our inaugural Working Bee Week. That is: Monday 31st March – Friday 4th April. If you are able to spare any time, even if it is just half an hour on any of the jobs listed below, let the office know when and how you are able to help. List of jobs: Gardening (weeding and pruning) Build a chook pen/run

Trim grass at the front of the school Move furniture Make Mr Carter a coffee!

Thanks in anticipation of your support.

SPORTS REPORT

JACK One of our Bike Riding legends, Jack competed in The Subaru National MTB Championships 2014 in Bright (VIC) two weekends ago.

Jack rode in the OT (Observed Trials) which includes: massive bunny hops, bikes with no seats, astonishing balance and hip-twisting efforts to not touch the ground with one's foot. OT involves short, marked sections of course that include a variety of technical obstacles. Riders are penalised via a sliding points scale for mistakes made while trying to ‘clean’ the section. The regulations provided by the UCI Trials Commission will be used as a reference and the riders do the rest.

Jack won this event last year as a 6 year old, competing against riders from right across the country. This year he finished second, beating a 15 year old and narrowly finishing second to a 13 year old. An amazing effort for a rider who is only seven!

We are very proud of Jack and his efforts on the bike. Goooo… Jack! Riley Riley trialled a few weeks ago to gain entry in the Hawkesbury Open Rugby League Trials. Opens means that students of all ages in primary school can trial for the team to represent the Hawkesbury District. Riley performed really well on the day and was good enough be selected for the team. He will now compete as part of the Hawkesbury team against other districts on a date to be confirmed later in the year.

Well done, Riley. A great effort!

Cassidy Cassidy, one of our newest students, has been selected in the district team and has now been selected in the Eastern Division basketball team. Cassidy has played at this level before and is looking to improve on last year’s results.

Impressive efforts, Cassidy! INDOOR CRICKET On Tuesday students from years 3-6 visited the Richmond Indoor Cricket Centre. We had a few hesitant participants at the beginning of the day, as cricket was not one of their favourite sports, however by the end of the day all of the students were commenting on what a fun experience it was. Our excursion was organised by Cricket NSW and was completely free of charge. The students were divided into four teams and played a round robin style competition. All children got an equal bat and bowl and were active for the majority of the day. I would like to thank Cricket NSW for organising the day. For our school to have the opportunity to take part in a day like this, without other schools was amazing as it gave our students the opportunity to shine, without bigger schools competing with us. The boys and girls in Years 3 – 6 need to be congratulated also. Their behaviour and enthusiasm was exceptional, as it always is at Cattai. We had a fantastic day, as the photos below suggest. Apps of the Week

10 Minutes a Day Endless Reader Times Tables 10 Minutes a Day Times Tables is a free app designed to help students become a maths superstar. Students spend 10 minutes per day working on their times tables skills in a fun fact-filled gaming experience. If your kids don’t know their times tables, this app is a must! Endless Reader introduces sight words to students with help from the adorable Endless monsters. Students solve interactive word puzzles with letters that come alive. The great thing about this app is that there are no scores, failures, limits or stress involved. Just fun learning to read! National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) If your child is currently in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, they'll sit NAPLAN tests this May. And despite what you may have heard, there's no reason to panic or start an intensive study schedule for your child. The government in 2001 introduced the “First Child Tax Offset”. This was one of the first types of baby bonuses introduced, but unlike todays Baby Bonus Schemes it was not given much media exposure and was confusing. As a result many parents have missed out on claiming this entitlement. The offset was introduced to compensate parents for reduced income that followed the arrival of a child born between 1 July 2001 and 30 June 2004. There is information on the ATO website, but like many entitlements it is difficult to understand. Again, the Australian Tax Office has now placed a deadline on claiming this offset JUNE 2014 (this deadline has not been widely promoted). With so many parents still unaware that they are eligible for this payment, we wish to advise as many as possible before the cut-off date.
