As with many high schoolers of the 50's and 60's, his formal wood edu-
cation began in shop class. Then real life intruded, and although he con-
tinued an informal love affair with wood and woodworking, the years
rolled by - college (BA Philosophy), wife, Army
(Vietnam), profession (horse photographer), and
midlife corrections (but same wife!). The wood
flame was rekindled in 1986 when he added a lathe
to his wood shop tool inventory. Aspirations soon
revealed his ignorance, so he attended his first turn-
ing workshop in 1987, and the magic of beauty in
found wood was revealed to him. Here was a proc-
ess that encompassed material, skill, form, logic, artistry, tools, and not de-
ferred gratification. The orgy had begun! The pattern of workshops served to
expand his skills and expectations, and collecting at craft shows and galleries
brought substance to his newfound passion. Each teacher that he selected lead
him down a new path of interest and ex-
ploration, and he sponged from their ex-
perience and bought their objects as won-
drous souvenirs. He learned to make
many of his own tools and see the poten-
tial beauty in wood all around him.

The President’s Page
T he June CAT picnic was a complete success for all those that came and enjoyed a few
hours of relaxing with friends at Banshee Reeks last month. The Red, Hot, & Blue BBQ
was great as were the sides and desserts brought by the members. The weather cooperated
to give us a sunny, but not too warm a day. The skies were blue all day. A special thanks to
our secretary, David Bell, for coordinating and organizing the entire picnic. You did a great
job, David. Thanks also to Roy and Wendy Aber and Dennis and Janet McCormick for coming
early to help set up. Mark Kaplan, our past treasurer, was the big winner in the raffle for the
Easy Rougher tool. Use it well, my friend. Roy Aber did a pendent demonstration, and Tom
Boley made a beautiful small box. Tom was awarded a Jibillo bowl blank for his box as the
best turning of the picnic. I hope he'll bring it in to the next “Show and Tell” so the rest of the
members can see it.
Terry Lund, our Program Director, has some great programs set up for the next couple
months so make sure you check out the information in the newsletter. In August, we'll be hav-
ing our first “flea market". Everyone can bring in any items they would like to sell or swap with
the membership. Although we are primarily a turning club, you're not restricted to bringing in
just turning tools or wood. You're welcome to bring in anything you're not using anymore, from
hammers to drills, or anything you want to pack in your car. The cost to the sellers will be 10%
of the sales contributed to the club treasury. The cost to the buyers, you'll need to lug what-
ever you buy home, and try explaining to your wife why you just couldn't live without it. If any-
one has a band saw for sale, I know someone that's interested. Remember to try and bring
cash to get the best deals.
One last thing, Graham Taylor has been working hard on getting our new logo put on
hats. We've decided on two versions: one light grey that Graham had at the picnic, and an-
other in dark blue. I'm hopeful we'll have them by the July meeting for sale to the member-
ship. Estimated cost should be about $12.00 per hat. I'm really excited about this. I know
how hard Hud Miller worked on designing the new logo, and it really looks great on the hats.
Once we get the hats for the membership, we'll start working on t-shirts and other items.

Upcoming Demonstrations
Jamie Donaldson
The Jamie Donaldson workshop is on Friday July 13. It’s currently full, with one per-
son on the waiting list. We certainly appreciate Terry Lund’s efforts in getting us these won-
derful turners and especially the use of his workshop.
Jamie is an experienced instructor for all aspects of turning bowls, both functional
items, as well as artistic items. The people who register will have an opportunity to provide in-
put to the topics to be covered for the workshop. You can read more about his work at http://
www.jamiedonaldsonwoodturner.com.
Please contact Terry if you have any questions about this workshop, or if you have suggestions
for future workshops.

determined. http://www.wonderfulwood.com/
Planning for Future Workshops:
When future demonstrators can provide a full day
hands-on workshop, it will most likely be restricted to 8
participants. We can handle up to 10 participants, but pre-
fer to limit the class size to allow more one on one interac-
tion with the instructor. We will consider going up to 10
participants if we get a large response for a particular work-
shop. The cost of the workshop is covered by the fee
charged to the participants. We can only hold the workshop
if we can confirm 8 paid participants at least 30 days ahead
of the workshop. If we accept more than 8 participants, we will refund the difference to each
participant. The workshop cost includes ten dollars for lunch, unless the participant opts to
bring their own lunch. The workshop fee also includes a $10-15 for the cost of supplying the
necessary wood for projects.
We will open registrations for each workshop for CAT members 2-3 months before the
actual workshop. You have a month to send Terry a check. Checks should be made out to Ca-
toctin Area Turners. This will reserve your place in the workshop. We will open up the regis-
tration to members of Apple Valley Woodturners (AVW) in Winchester, and Capital Area
Woodturners (CAW) in Alexandria if we do not have at least eight CAT members signed up
two months before the workshop date. We will accept names, with a check, for a waiting list
for each workshop. Your check will be held until the day of the workshop, and your check will
be returned to you if your place at the workshop is filled by another person. We have structured
the workshop fees so that CAT does not subsidize the costs of the workshop. That's why we
need to confirm we have eight participants paid at least 30 days in advance for each workshop.

I believe that the dog days of summer have arrived a bit
early for me this year. If this month hasn’t been busy
enough for me, both personally and professionally, then the
breeze of the century came down upon us all on Friday eve-
ning, 29 June 2012. I bet there were more people affected by
this storm than weren’t. For Jacqui and I, we were some of
the more fortunate ones. We were without power for only 12
hours. My three daughters weren’t as fortunate. One was
without power for three days. I’m writing this editor’s bench
piece on the 4th of July, and I know there were still a few of our members without power.
Needless to say, they probably have had more important things to do and to think about other
than turning any new pieces.
Let me direct your attention to page 6 of our newsletter, if you haven’t already seen it. Lee
Hanson, our local Leesburg Woodcraft manager and CAT member, has announced a Wood-
turning Pen competition. I will be participating in this event, not as a competitor but as a
judge. I’m very flattered that Lee has given me this opportunity. I don’t turn as many pens
these days as I had previously, but it certainly was and continues to be a very important part of
my journey into the world of woodturning. So, it is with great anticipation that I look forward
to this competition. Let’s hope that you all get a chance to submit your pens.

Great job as always Juan!

Juan Gil is now maintaining a listing of what lathes members own which can be used
by other members who might be considering a purchase of a new (or additional) lathe. Juan is
interested in adding some additional information to this listing to also include some specialized
tooling or other items that might be of interest to other members, such as the following items:
1. Hollowing system(s)
2. Coring system(s)
3. Favorite turning tool
4. Favorite homemade tool
5. What model bandsaw
6. What model(s) chainsaw
7. Favorite web site related to woodturning
There will be a copy of the current listing of member lathes at the July 12 meeting, and Juan
will have some sign-up sheets to submit this additional information, or you can now contact
Juan Gil via email at [email protected] (his information is also listed on the contact page on
CAT web site to get a copy of the form if you are not able to attend the meeting).

Mentoring Program by Terry Lund
W e have established a mentoring program for CAT members, so Terry Lund is looking
for volunteers to be mentors as well as requests from any of our members who would
like to be paired up with a mentor in one of the following areas of interest for turning skills, or
for general mentoring activity. Terry will have sign-up forms for those who want to be a men-
tor as well as for those who would like to be matched up with an assigned mentor at the next
meeting on July 12. If you are interested in either opportunity but will not be at the meeting,
please contact him via email at [email protected] or call him on his cell phone 585-455-
2517. Please include your name, address, phone number, email address, and indicate your level
of experience as Beginner, Intermediate, or Experienced when requesting a mentor.
We will try to match interested individuals with a mentor who lives “reasonably close”
whenever possible, and if we get enough mentors to sign up, we will also try to match based on
one of the following areas of interest, or feel free to mention another area of interest.
