Cathy Nguyen I still remember the day my uncle collapsed. I was only a mere toddler, but I have clips of

rushing to the hospital engraved into my memories. I never fully grasped the idea of “passing away” until I was 6 years old, but I still remember the heartbreak and anguish that was written all over my family members’ faces. I knew my best friend wasn’t there anymore.

Fast forward to 16, and my grandmother is in the same hospital where my uncle took his last break. This time, I actually got to go into the ICU. I was amazed by the comfort and care the physicians gave my bà ngoại. They let me hold her hand while they talked to my parents. It was hard for my parents to be in the same hospital even after all these years, but I saw their discomfort disappear as the doctors explained my grandmother’s condition. Even though it wasn’t the greatest of news, we were able to take my grandmother home that day.

Those memories lingered in my mind for years, but I have pondered on them immensely this year as I take large leaps towards my future. Even though I see my pediatrician every single year, I didn’t fully appreciate healthcare professionals until I noticed how they handled problematic situations. I felt appreciative and blessed, but I became weary about going into a career in the health field where everyone seems to be broken.

The idea of being able to handle pressure fascinated me. I have been in intense situations as a tennis player, but I couldn’t imagine holding a life in my hands instead of a racket. When I got the chance to work and perform tasks as a certified nursing assistant, I was constantly stressed from the possibility of hurting a patient. My fellow classmates would say that our hardest skill, without a doubt, would be providing personal care, but for me, it was transferring and moving patients.

At five feet and 2 ½ inches, I was still expected to be able to lift and adjust patients twice or even triple my size. It was horrifying learning the skill the first time, but as time progressed and the exam got closer, I conquered that fear because I knew that I was qualified to perform these tasks. Physicians are confident in their jobs and comfortable with patients because of the practice backing their skills. When I realized that, I no longer feared going into the medical field and the long journey that comes with it.

Going into medicine was my family’s dream for me, but I never took it seriously until after I got a taste of what it meant. The hardships that I faced in the nursing home and hospital solidified that dream for me. Those experiences alongside the tragedies of my past are what motivates me.

I failed many times, which were especially evident in the last few years. I spilled expensive suspension at the pharmacy on my first day. I didn’t say goodbye to my childhood friend before she passed away. I enraged my parents from my indecisiveness. I was ignorant about cousin’s mental conditions and was subconsciously condescending to my aunt as a result of it. Some mistakes were more severe than others, but they all brought clarity on who I was and who I wanted to become. I have learned to show the utmost respect to everyone I encounter and be more aware of my actions. There will be regret and heartbreak that I simply don’t have control over, but I learned to cherish what life has given me and embrace the people in my life even when they are gone.

My goal going into the medical pathway is to be able to interact with people effectively and confidently. It seems like such a simple goal, but I have learned from my failures and discomfort that words have power in any given situation. Another goal of mine is to stay motivated even through the tough times. I want to become an orthopedic surgeon in the long run so I need to keep moving and learning. Even though there is a lot of material to learn and skills to perfect, I don’t ever want to be too exhausted to continue. My third, and final goal, is to always give back and to make a difference. The ability to put another before yourself is difficult to do when you have ambitions of your own, but I want to incorporate my dream of becoming a physician to aid others through their tough and often confusing times.

been volunteering at this nursing home for about 3 years and I noticed that many residents had been struggling to carry their cell

phones, snacks and loose change as most of them could not own or afford a purse to keep all their belongings. That got me thinking

and over the course of the summer, I resolved to make them small bags to carry their belongings. While researching,I came across this

cool idea of `T shirt bags`. I reached out to friends and family for donations to help fund a sewing machine and took a few classes on

how to sew. I finished about 30 bags and donated it to the residents of Magnolia Manor. I intend to continue working on the same as my

Priyanka Rao “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Although this quote has been said many

times, I never truly understood it till I joined HOSA. Over the past 4 years of my high school career, HOSA has always been a guiding light for me. It has constantly given me so many amazing opportunities such as meeting extraordinary healthcare professionals, or challenging me through state and national competitions or best of all, giving me the opportunity to give back to our community through volunteering and service. The three most exemplary qualities I have gained through my time in HOSA are (1) organization, (2) perseverance and (3) leadership.

Organization is one of the most vital qualities for an officer. Having been an officer for 3 years for such a large organization, my organizational skills have sharpened considerably. With this skill, I have helped to plan a school-wide color war, dance marathon, and several chapter meetings. All of these events have been extremely successful due to our chapter’s ability to tie all loose ends. Throughout my time in college, I will be able to utilize this skill of organization to help with time management, academics, and leadership events.

Perseverance is another extremely important quality. Many of the events we plan take a lot of patience and the will to overcome many obstacles. One of the first events I ever planned was the color war in November of 2015. Getting to work with a team and learning about compromising and time management was an amazing experience for me. Finally, the week of the color war arrived. On the day of the color war, the historic floods hit Columbia and slashed through all of our plans. In just two weeks, we had to reschedule all the vendors, prep the field, and advertise the new date. It was a whirlwind experience but when the day finally came, we surpassed our goal and raised $800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance. With this skill, I will be able to overcome any obstacle I face in the future. I will also be able to work through and find creative solutions to any hurdle.

Leadership is the most significant quality I have learned over my time in HOSA. It entails all of the great qualities such as critical thinking, courage, perseverance, organization etc. But I have come to realize that the most important quality it entails is teamwork. The ability to compromise and communicate is what being a leader is all about. By working together, our officer team is able to be more efficient and successful. Besides teamwork, I have learned how to help advise new officers or members. As a sophomore, I was the historian and my scrapbook placed at the national level. The next year, our historian asked me many times for advice on the scrapbook, which also placed at nationals. Many underclassmen will approach me about the State Leadership Conference and various events they are competing in. I do my best to use my personal experiences to advise them on how to pursue their goal. As I pursue my aspiration to be a neurosurgeon, I will use my leadership skills to help impact people in my community through various community service events, like a dance marathon, and participate in organizations, like HOSA, that give back so much to society.

HOSA has impacted my life in so many extraordinary ways. I have grown so much as a person and a student. It has shown me that I am a leader who can bring about change in our society if I constantly pursue my goal. It has truly shown me that I can be the change I want to be in the world.

Top Ten in the World for HOSA's Dental Science Competitive Event in 2016 at the InternationalLeadership Conference | 06/22/2016 - 06/25/2016

Extracurricular / Community Service Volunteering at Emory University Hospital Midtown | 06/08/2015 - 07/13/2015

During six weeks over the summer, I volunteered at Emory University Hospital Midtown on Mondays from 9 AM to 4 PM in both the

Utilization Review Department and the Nurses' desk. The Utilization Review Department focused on medical records and insurance, so

this is where I learned about how medical records are handled and the process that hospitals and patients have to go through. I got

clearance at the hospital to be able to organize and work with filing records, so this experience definitely opened my eyes as to the wide

range of possible career options that are contained in a hospital. In the afternoon, I worked at the Nurses' Desk where I got to be on the

medical floor amidst patients' rooms and answer phone calls. This shift contrasted with my morning shift in the Utilization Review

Department because I was now in the more typical hospital setting. I definitely got to interact with health professionals and get their

input on healthcare and its professions. The entire experience was a great learning opportunity not only in terms of exploring a hospital,

but also developing my communication skills and exposing myself to new situations. I spent a total of 40 hours volunteering at this

hospital. Volunteering at Northside Hospital Forsyth over two consecutive summers | 06/19/2015 - 07/29/2016

Over the summer of 2015 and 2016, I volunteered at Northside Hospital Forsyth. In 2015, I volunteered in the Atlanta Ear, Nose, and

Throat office within the hospital and on the transport team. In the doctor's office, I got an opportunity to put the knowledge I had gained

from my healthcare classes through my high school's career tech pathway to the test. Also, I saw multiple biopsies and got a firsthand

look at the preparation that goes into each and every procedure. Following this shift, I went to work with the hospital's transport team to

deliver specimens, patients, and wheelchairs to different parts of the hospital. An aspect that I vividly remember was how friendly and

talkative the volunteers in that department were, so I learned a lot about the hospital, the people there, and received helpful advice for

the future. I enjoyed the contrast that my shifts in the doctor's office and transport team provided because they gave me a well-rounded

experience and perspective of the hospital. In 2016, I worked in the Pre-Operation floor preparing stretchers, wiping down rooms, and

interacting with the nurses. This shift gave me a glimpse into all the people and procedures that go into having a room and bed ready

and clean for a patient, whether that patient is an adult or a toddler. Through my time at Northside Hospital Forsyth, my perception of a

hospital and all the hard work that goes into providing quality care changed for the better, and my appreciation for the healthcare

professionals grew tremendously. Over these two summers, I volunteered for a total of 98 hours. Volunteering at Emory Johns Creek Hospital | 06/15/2016 - 07/27/2016

Over the summer of 2016, I was selected as one of 24 candidates chosen from 240 applicants to participate in the summer volunteering

program. At the hospital, I volunteered in the Intensive Care Unit as well as the on the third medical floor. In the ICU, I restocked gloves

and disinfectant wipes and got to participate in the Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds with the physician, dietitian, pharmacist,

and physical therapist, in which these health professionals go from room to room discussing each patient's plan for recovery and going

over medications. One day, during what seemed to be a normal shift, the lights, alarms, and vital machines went off for one patient's

room. Within seconds, doctors, nurses, technicians, and several others rushed into the ICU in an effort to save someone's life. This

situation was frightening, but my appreciation of and respect for these individuals rose greatly. Even though every life may not have

been saved, the importance of healthcare and the people who dedicate their lives to service was put into perspective. My second shift

on the third medical floor consisted of going around to patients' rooms giving out ice or water and restocking supplies. I specifically liked

this shift because I got to interact with and talk to the patients. In total, I spent 51 hours volunteering at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Tutoring middle school students through 121 Reach Club | 01/06/2014 - 05/05/2016

Every Monday and Thursday for an hour after school, I tutored Taylor Road Middle School students through a club at my high school

called 121 Reach. We, high school students, helped middle school students with their homework and studying for their tests. Through

this club, I formed a mentor relationship with my tutee. I remember how my tutee wasn't doing exceptionally well in her math class, so

we went over several math problems over the course of two or three sessions. The next time we met, she was so excited to tell me that

she got an A on her math test. This grade encouraged her to continue to work hard and ask for help when she was unsure of how to

tackle a question. Over the course of my 60 hours of volunteering, I'm glad that I was able to not only tutor her, but also mentor her as

she progressed through middle school thanks to 121 Reach.

Experience Emory Summer Science Academy | 06/09/2014 - 06/20/2014

Over the summer of 2014, I participated in the Emory Summer Science Academy, which was a two week long program from 9AM to

4PM consisting of science and math classes. The information I learned in the classes prepared me for what I was going to learn in

school in the fall, so the classes were extremely helpful. For example, in science, I learned about anatomy and physiology and in math,

I did practice calculus problems. One of the best aspects of this summer camp was having to research a study in any topic in

healthcare and compiling a poster to present to all the parents and visitors on the last day of the program. My partner and I chose a

study discussing the effect of cystic fibrosis on the gender longevity. In the research study, it was found that the average life expectancy

for males with cystic fibrosis was about 28 and women was 25. Race and gastrointestinal problems played a role in the disparity but no

specific cause for the difference in life expectancy was found in the 1992 study. This summer camp allowed me to meet new people

and increase my knowledge for two weeks. Treasurer (11th) and President (12th) of Indian Cultural Exchange Club | 08/17/2015 - Present

During my junior year in high school, I served as the Treasurer for the Indian Cultural Exchange Club, which aimed at exploring,

sharing, and celebrating Indian culture as well as contributing to the community and raising money for nonprofit organizations in India

with a focus on village development and creating educational opportunities for children. I became the President at the beginning of my

senior year. Over these past two years, we, as a club, have raised and donated over $300 to an Indian charity called Ekal Vidyalaya. Treasurer of Gamma Gamma Sigma Club | 08/17/2014 - 05/21/2015

During the 2014-2015 school year, I served as the Treasurer of Gamma Gamma Sigma, which is an all-girls leadership club focused on

empowering young women through community service and other forms of volunteering. Throughout the year, we, as a club, helped

sort donations and canned food at North Fulton Community Charities, packaged and sorted more canned foods for homeless shelters,

and directed our focus to ensuring that homeless people have a place to go for their next meal. We also volunteered at joint events with

the Girl Scout Organization. Overall, I learned a lot and grew as a person through my service as Treasurer of Gamma Gamma Sigma,

and I used the knowledge and experience I gained to inspire and guide me in my future aspirations. Serving as an officer for this club

certainly taught me the importance and value of dedicating a few hours of my time to helping others.

Without my involvement with HOSA, I would not be the more outgoing, confident, and well-composed person I am today. The organization has not only allowed me to take part in community service, fundraisers, and walks locally, but has also given me the opportunity to explore and network with people and associations from the vast number of healthcare pathways. From volunteering at the JDRF Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes and the March of Dimes Walk for Babies through my high school chapter to meeting healthcare professionals at the State and International Leadership Conferences, I’ve seen the importance of supporting good causes and have talked to several people who embody a dedication to service. Interacting and communicating with these individuals and many others has encouraged me to take initiative and be more outgoing in order to search for service opportunities and form life-long connections. Over the course of my years of participation in HOSA, I have met numerous achievers, role-models, and friends and seen their inspiring drive to help or create something they are passionate about, which I hope to replicate in my own unique way.

HOSA’s competitive events, specifically Dental Science, have helped me discover my passion for dentistry. When I first registered for regionals testing, I was simply curious about dentistry since I have had a total of eight teeth extracted and braces for two years. As soon as I started studying, I found that reading textbook chapters and reviewing procedures didn’t feel grueling or boring at all; in fact, I enjoyed absorbing the previously unknown information. In no way did I think that the 2015 Dental Science regional’s multiple choice test was easy, so when I found out that I had placed first in the region, I was surprised and very excited. Similar experiences followed as I placed third in the state, and these outcomes definitely taught me more about myself because I had repeatedly underestimated myself in these situations. I began to be more optimistic and confident in my abilities as a result, which helped me go into testing and honestly any situation with a more positive outlook. The following year, placing second at my high school, first in the state of Georgia at the State Leadership Conference and top ten in the world at the International Leadership Conference, I learned how to better handle pressure and deal with nervousness. This is a skill that I’m very glad I gained from my HOSA experiences because down the road with interviews, competitions, and unknown situations, I am going to need to know how to keep my nerves under control so that I can always put forth my best effort and perform at my highest capacity. Health Occupations Students of America has given the chance to both venture outside my comfort zone and take part in the Dental Science competitive event, which have significantly influenced my plans for the future as I now know that I want to pursue a career in dentistry and work towards reducing the prevalence of preventable oral diseases like tooth decay.

Sonja Moore HOSA-Future Health Professionals has been the most exciting and enhancing high school

activity in which I have participated. In fact, I have developed many qualities through HOSA, such as leadership, sense of community, and public speaking that I likely would not have developed through any other means. I can easily imagine myself relying upon these traits time and time again throughout my life.

Until my junior year, leadership intimidated and eluded me. At chapter meetings my freshman year, I remember looking at the chapter officers and thinking, “I could never be an officer; that would be terrifying.” At the State Leadership Conference, the following year, I was as intimidated by the responsibilities of the state office team. However, after being Public Relations Officer for my chapter during my junior year, I leaped out of my comfort zone and successfully ran for both President of my chapter and Vice President of Region One for Washington State HOSA. As a state officer, there were two leadership programs I had the opportunity to attend, the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) State Officer training in Washington and the Washington Leadership Academy in Washington D.C. I eagerly attended both of these events and learned how to be an effective leader through evaluating my core beliefs. Learning how to work with teammates’ core values and having the chance to see leadership on a large scale will influence the rest of my life.

In Washington, D.C. as I toured the National Mall, I was awestruck with the legacy of leadership. From the famous Lincoln Memorial with Lincoln’s Second Inaugural and the Gettysburg Addresses inscribed on the walls, to the lesser known soldiers honored by the Vietnam Memorial, I realized that every person recognized in the Mall was a leader, and I was incredibly inspired.

Within my small rural community, I can now understand how beliefs different from mine influence the decisions of other people, and I can consider and appreciate their points of view. At college, I will strive to be open minded when I meet students from other backgrounds. After college, I want to help other people in developing countries with healthcare and education. Being able to consider other cultures’ perspectives will help me relate.

When I attended the Washington Leadership Academy, my social skills grew exponentially. Throughout the five days, I met and interacted with students nationwide who shared my excitement. As we toured the National Mall, Uniformed Services University, Arlington National Cemetery, and many other places, I learned how to interact with peers about whom I knew very little. In college, I will be comfortable meeting new people who are different from me because of HOSA, and after college I intend to be in different countries interacting with people who have different cultural values. Therefore, I am now confident in interacting with others and will carry this strength forward.

Public speaking was a frightful task for me throughout the first three years of high school; however, HOSA has changed my outlook. To be considered for state office, I was interviewed in front of thirty people. Two months after I was elected, I attended the CTSO State Officer training where three people were randomly chosen to talk for three minutes in front of approximately fifty peers, describing a time when he or she recognized his or herself as a leader. I was one of the students chosen and those three minutes changed my outlook on public speaking. After making this spontaneous speech, I realized I enjoyed public speaking! Six months later, I spoke in front of more than 100 people at Washington HOSA’s Fall Leadership Conference, and just this weekend I spoke to an audience of 1000 people at Washington’s State Leadership Conference. Never in my life would I have thought I would be confident enough to speak on stage in front of this many peers.

HOSA has allowed me to refine valuable skills. Four years ago, I would never have thought I would be an effective servant leader, let alone enjoy public speaking. As I prepare for college, I realize that many of the qualities which will improve my experience are a result of being a member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals and I am grateful.

Alyssa Polizzi To whom it may concern,

Throughout my three years of being in HOSA, I have had the chance to learn many important skills in life. One thing I have learned is the meaning of perseverance. I have gained knowledge on working hard to achieve a desired goal and being able to overcome obstacles to get to that goal. One of these obstacles has been my hearing loss. Hearing loss makes it difficult to work with the public. I have had to strive harder to accommodate myself when it comes to understanding what those around me are saying, like the people in a loud atmosphere such as the competitions. I learned to overcome this difficulty while still being able to make a difference in this world. Through great dedication, I have gotten far in the competition. In the future, my perseverance skills will enable me to achieve greater accomplishments as I go through life. By applying the hard work I have had to put forth in order to get far in the competitions to real life, I will show my determination to give everything my all. I have also learned people skills and how to be a part of lasting friendships with peers. HOSA has given me the opportunity to come out of my shell and meet new people that open doors to greater experiences for me. Throughout competing, I have met many new people that are even from different states. Being a part of this competing atmosphere has allowed me to become a part of something bigger with other people, and not just go it alone. In the future, I plan to continue to enhance my interpersonal skills and gain better rapport with those around me. This will help me as I go through life because I will be able to not only seek guidance from those around me but give advice of my own as well.

Leadership skills are a big aspect I have learned while being a part of HOSA. As a sophomore, I looked up to those who were older and have been a part of the HOSA experience longer. I have gained knowledge from them and have used that knowledge to better myself. Now being a senior, I have become a great leader in HOSA and help encourage and teach incoming students the many things I have learned throughout being in this program so that they may one day become leaders for others. I have become a good role model for these incoming students just as I once modeled off of those who I have met in my sophomore and junior years. Not only have I applied these leadership qualities to HOSA, but I have also used them in other school activities, such as yearbook. In yearbook, I have been the copy editor for three years. This leadership role in yearbook as well has given me more insight on how to become a team player and help to motivate others. I have developed these skills to help mentor others and be a part of a team in my future veterinary career.

Becoming a veterinarian has been a dream of mine for a lifetime. Competing in the veterinary science event for HOSA these past three years has shown me that with perseverance, great people skills, and leadership, that this dream can become reality. Sincerely, Alyssa Polizzi
