For our Remembrance Mass on October 28th two chairs, draped in white satin, were placed near the front of the sanctuary. These chairs were placed to help us call to mind our friends and rel-atives who have gone before us. These loved ones, held in our hearts, are always with us. Each of us will have a face or a remem-brance that will occupy these chairs. November is the month of All Saints and All Souls, calling us to pray for and pray with those we mourn and miss daily. As we look at the empty chairs let us take a few moments and remember.

As we prepare for our Christmas Gala we turn once again to you, our parishioners, for support. We are in need of items for the Silent and Live Auctions. In the past, you have so generously do-nated sports or theatre tickets, vacation homes, art pieces, wine baskets, golf oppor-tunities, jewelry, decorative items, toys, etc. and other items that you have come up with, that have made for great auction items. We ask, please, that all items donated be new. Your finest contribution of all may be your energetic participation on the Auction Commit-tee. We are looking for volunteers to join us in keeping the Auction special and different each year. Your involvement, at any level, would be greatly appreciated, helping us help St. Max and all of its worthy Ministries. If you would like to contribute, join the committee or have questions please call: Mary Kay Doane 805-496-1213

    THE POOR

As Christians, we hear a lot about the witness and ser-vice that we are called to render to the poor among us. However, the poor also have a witness and a service to render to us. Like the actions of the widow in today’s Gospel, the openness and generosity of many of those who are poor, even in the midst of their own poverty, bear witness to the fact that, ultimately, we can depend only on God. Giving one’s all witnesses that God will give all to anyone who trusts in divine goodness. The poor or disadvantaged also serve. They serve judg-ment on our individual and corporate ways of acting. If people are sleeping in our streets, that is a judgment on our priorities regarding others. At the same time, the poor can act as mediators of salvation. When they care for others they can redeem our indifference and insensi-bility, lead us to care as well, and save us from our-selves. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

New religious faith gives fresh lenses for viewing human customs, and the wisdom to transform them. In the an-cient world, the Romans feared the dead. Funeral cus-toms were designed to hasten the departure of souls to the next world. Cremation was the rule, although burial increased in popularity in the second century. Proces-sion from the place of death to the place of cremation or burial was the most important part of the funeral. Those who carried the funeral bier carried it low, close to the ground, to promote the soul’s departure to the nether world. Christians, on the other hand, did not fear the dead, but cherished them as they consigned them to Christ’s love and protection. Gradually, they began to reject customs rooted in fear. Christians carried their dead to their resting places singing, with the bier carried high, away from the ground and toward the heavens. For the Chris-tian, the grave was a sign of hope and a place of re-membrance. Superstitious Romans feared burial places, and so the Christians cherished them as places of re-membrance and prayer, and in time, even celebrated the Eucharist there. In November, many of us visit the cemetery for prayer and the autumn clean‑up. By cher-ishing our dead, we are responding in faith to a vital part of our Christian tradition. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Ensure a safe road trip this holiday Taking the kids on a road trip to visit relatives and friends is a holiday tradition for many of us. Here are two tips that can help you get there and back as safely as possible: 1 Ensure that all occupants of any vehicles are proper-ly secured and that there are no large or heavy items in the vehicle that may injure the occupants at any sudden stops. 2. A single parent travelling with children should en-sure that permission from other parent is readily avail-able for authorities (this is to prevent one parent ab-ductions). This is especially important for air/train or cross border travel. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.
