Catholic Strong Questions…and Answers You have been hearing about the Catholic Strong campaign for a few months now and I have been getting some questions, so I am using my column this week to answer some of the common questions that have been raised. 1) Will the parish really receive 70 % of the funds we raise? YES. 70% of the funds we raise as a parish community will stay right here with us. Whether or not we meet our goal of $1.34 million, 70% of the funds we raise will stay right here. 2) Will funds that go to the diocese be used to pay settlements as a result of the clergy abuse scandal? NO. Claims like this are settled through insurance and diocesan investments. Not one penny of the Catholic Strong Funds raised will go toward legal settlements. 3) How will our parish use the funds? Very generally, our funds will serve 2 basic areas: new parish ministries (Such as youth and young adult ministry and evangelization) and upkeep and repair of our parish buildings and facilities. For example, this summer new roofs were needed for St. Lawrence School and John Paul II School. In the near future, we plan to refurbish the Tabernacle and Sanctuary Marble Altar Floor in St. Lawrence Church. Down the road we plan to repaint both churches, refurbish school bathrooms, and I am thinking about creating a shrine at St. Luke’s to honor Our Lady of Grace. 4) Will I be asked to make a pledge? Yes. The funds collected from Catholic Strong will be a collective sacrifice. I am pleased that all the clergy in the parish have already made a pledge to give a certain amount to the campaign over the next 3 to 5 years. We will ask parishioners to consider the same. For example, a $3,000 pledge given over 5 years is $600 each year, or $50 a month. If enough parishioners make that pledge we will easily surpass our goal. As I mentioned at Mass, my Mom and Dad lived on a fixed modest income, so I know that this is hard for many. Please bring this to prayer and careful consideration. Any sacrificial donation will be appreciated. But please, do not let this campaign stress you; give as you can give. God will bless your loving sacrifice a hundred-fold. 5) When will I be asked? We have a large parish, so the Catholic Strong Campaign is being rolled out in phases. Clergy and volunteers have already met with some parishioners. (We raised approximately $120,000 already!) Before too long, you will receive information in the mail and will be asked to consider making a pledge. If you are ready to donate now please call the parish office and I will be happy to discuss this with you. Thank you for all of your love and generosity. Remember, our grandparents and parents built this great parish, now it is our turn to grow and keep the Catholic Faith Strong in our community.

Saint John Paul II Regional School

On October 19, 2018 the school kicked off their Race for Education Fundraiser. The school is racing to update

technology in their T.V. Studio and in the classrooms, as well as purchase Google Chromebooks for the students to use. The goal this year is $17,500. After the Masses this weekend, there

will be a table set up in the back of both churches for you to make a good will offering to help the students achieve their

goal. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

The Parish Gospel Challenge / El Desafío del Evangelio Parroquial The Gospel Challenge continues as we journey with Jesus and complete our reading of the Gospel of Luke and begin

the Gospel of John.

Luke Chapter 20 Reflection Questions: In this chapter, Jesus teaches about the resurrection. How does your belief in the future resurrection give your comfort and peace, and how does your faith in after life effect your life and life’s decisions today? Luke Chapter 21 Reflection Questions: What does the contribution of the poor widow teach you about charity? What do you think about when Jesus tells you to be “on guard” and “watchful” concerning the coming of the Son of Man? Luke Chapter 22 Reflection Questions: In this chapter the Passion of Jesus begins. Picture yourself at the Last Supper. How do you feel when Jesus says, “this is my body…this is my blood, which is given for you?” Do you find it ironic that even at the last supper, the disciples argue about who is the greatest? What can the Church learn from that? Luke Chapter 23 Reflection Questions: Place yourself at the scene of the crucifixion with Jesus. Jesus looks down at you. How do you feel? What does the exchange between Jesus and the criminal on the cross tell you about the love and mercy of Jesus? Luke Chapter 24 Reflection Questions: How can you proclaim the message of Resurrection to family and friends. How is the encounter at Emmaus similar to our Mass? What moved your heart as you read and prayed with the Gospel of Luke?

The Gospel of John—Introduction You will notice that the Gospel of John is written in a much

different style than the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Jesus is presented from the beginning as the Word of God,

sent into the world to summon people to faith and salvation. Jesus presents himself as the Living Water, the Bread of Life,

the Good Shepherd and the Vine. It is a Gospel with great encounters, such as with the woman at the well, the man born blind, Nicodemus, and the raising of Lazarus. I pray you can encounter Jesus in this wonderful Gospel, and allow the Lord

to lead you to salvation. John Chapter 1 Reflection Questions: The Prologue of John’s Gospel, 1:1-18, is one of the most powerful and deep passages of the Bible. As you read these powerful words, what are your thoughts about God and His role in your life? Jesus calls the first two disciples how is He calling you to follow Him? John Chapter 2 Reflection Questions: At the “Wedding Feast in Cana”, Mary tells the servants at the wedding feast to “Do whatever He tells you.” As Catholics, we have a special devotion to our Blessed Mother which is often misunderstood. Remember that we pray to God through Mary. She continues to guide and lead us to her Son. How has Mary led you to Jesus? Jesus cleanses the temple, what can you clean out of your own life that keeps you from truly experiencing God?

comenzamos el Evangelio de Juan. Lucas Capítulo 20 Preguntas para reflexionar: En este capítulo, Jesús enseña acerca de la resurrección. ¿De qué manera su creencia en la futura resurrección le brinda consuelo y paz, y cómo su fe en la vida después de la vida afecta su vida y las decisiones en la vida hoy? Lucas Capítulo 21 Preguntas para reflexionar: ¿Qué te enseña la contribución de la pobre viuda sobre la caridad? ¿En qué piensas cuando Jesús te dice que estés "en guardia" y "vigilante" con respecto a la venida del Hijo del Hombre? Lucas Capítulo 22 Preguntas para reflexionar: En este capítulo comienza la Pasión de Jesús. Imagínate a ti mismo en la última cena. ¿Cómo te sientes cuando Jesús dice: "este es mi cuerpo ... esta es mi sangre que se entrega para ti?" ¿Te parece irónico que incluso en la última cena, los discípulos discutan sobre quién es el más grande? ¿Qué puede aprender la Iglesia de eso? Lucas Capítulo 23 Preguntas para reflexionar: Sitúate en la escena de la crucifixión con Jesús. Jesús te mira. ¿Cómo te sientes? ¿Qué te dice el intercambio entre Jesús y el criminal en la cruz sobre el amor y la misericordia de Jesús? Lucas Capítulo 24 Preguntas para reflexionar: ¿Cómo puede usted proclamar el mensaje de la Resurrección a familiares y amigos? ¿En qué se parece el encuentro en Emaús a nuestra misa? ¿Qué conmovió tu corazón al leer y orar con el Evangelio de Lucas?

El evangelio de Juan—Introducción Notarás que el Evangelio de Juan está escrito en un estilo muy diferente al de los Evangelios de Mateo, Marcos y Lucas. Jesús se presenta desde el principio como la Palabra de Dios, enviada

al mundo para convocar a las personas a la fe y la salvación. Jesús se presenta a sí mismo como el Agua Viva, el Pan de Vida, el Buen Pastor y la Vid. Es un evangelio con grandes

encuentros, como con la mujer en el pozo, el hombre ciego de nacimiento, Nicodemo y la crianza de Lázaro. Te pido que te

encuentres con Jesús en este maravilloso Evangelio y permitas que el Señor te guíe a la salvación.

Preguntas de reflexión del capítulo 1 de Juan: El prólogo del evangelio de Juan, 1: 1-18, es uno de los pasajes más poderosos y profundos de la Biblia. Al leer estas palabras poderosas, ¿cuáles son sus pensamientos acerca de Dios y su papel en su vida? Jesús llama a los dos primeros discípulos, ¿cómo te está llamando a que lo sigas? Juan Capítulo 2 Preguntas para reflexionar: En la " Fiesta de las bodas en Caná", María les dice a los sirvientes en el banquete en las bodas que hagan "Lo que Él le diga". Como católicos, tenemos una devoción especial por nuestra Santísima Madre que a menudo se malinterpreta. Recuerda que oramos a Dios a través de María. Ella continúa guiándonos y guiándonos a su Hijo. ¿Cómo te ha llevado María a Jesús? Jesús limpia el templo, ¿qué puedes limpiar de tu propia vida que te impide experimentar realmente a Dios?

-Just a reminder for those who are able, your child can bring their food donations to help with the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving food baskets to the Faith Formation classes on November 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th. -All families in the Faith Formation program and JPII 7th and 8th grade families can now sign up to make bologna and cheese sandwiches for the Cathedral Kitchen on the first Sunday of Advent, December 2nd. We will meet in the JPII cafeteria at 9:00am. Please email msalvinoolg@gmail.com on or before November 26th if your family would like to participate. Each family will be asked to bring a donation of 1 lb. of beef bologna, 1 lb. of cheese, 1 loaf of bread large enough to make 10 sandwiches and 1 other item which will be assigned to your family.
