This week we celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori within the Marist whānau. The theme this year was Kia kaha Te Reo Maori! ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong’ and we tried to do our best to practise it inside and outside of the classroom. It was great to see all departments join in the celebrations. From the PE kaupapa ‘Te Ao Koriori’, the Year 7 and 8 students were introduced to various activities from the Māori world such as the poi, mau rakau, titi torea, whai and knuckle bones. They enjoyed learning the history behind them and had lots of fun using them.

In the Science Department the students were taught about the Solar System as Te Whānau a Tamanui te rā (The family of the Sun) and expanded their Te Reo vocabulary in the meantime. Other activities were also held, such as a quiz which tested staff and students’ Māori knowledge, a game of pukana at break time and we learnt how to make beautiful flowers from flax (harakeke) with the help of Whaea Jane. During one morning tea, the staff were treated to delicious Māori kai, fried bread and kūmara rēwena loaf with various spreads.

Our celebrations finished with a lively Huni Taonga (Treasure hunt) activity during which the intermediate PE classes had to find different places around the school. With the help of our bilingual signs posted everywhere, they quickly found the atea kaiako (staffroom), the whare kai (tuck shop) along many different places and filled up their water bottles at the puna wai (drinking fountain).

  • Year 13 Painting and Photography student Frances Glynn has been selected for the Pat Hanly Creativity Award. Frances was chosen as one of the top Year 13 art students in Auckland, and on top of her award has been invited to take part in two workshops with NZ contemporary artists Janet Lilo, Ziggy Level, Lucy Meyle, John Vea and Luise Fong. We are very proud of her achievements and look forward to her exciting creative future!

A massive thank you to you all for your generous donations to the Cans for

    Christmas Mufti Day!

We collected over 900 cans for families in need this Christmas. So thank you everyone for

showing your faith in action. God bless you all!

Saturday’s t-shirt workshop was a very busy affair. Mum and daughter taking measurements, solving problems, squaring straight lines and drawing curves.

It was a wonderfully collaborative exercise, and the results speak for themselves. Congratulations to everyone who was involved!

Visual Art ShowcaseThe 4th Visual Art Showcase was a fantastic success, exhibiting a range of Marist College’s creative talents. This year it was not only the beautiful art work on show, but Dance, Fabric Technology, Performing Arts Technology and even edible art in the shape of the food tables and platters thanks to Mrs Fowkes and her Home Economics students. A big thanks to all the staff, students and parents who helped out, bought work and supported the event. It wouldn’t happen without you!

  • Tournament Week Wrap Up

First XI Football – National Premier TournamentOur First XI Football team ended their season with a creditable 13th place finish at the National Premier Tournament held in Christchurch. With the best 32 teams in New Zealand competing at the tournament a placing in the top half was a remarkable achievement for our girls. Not only did they compete against every team they came against, they also beat one of the eventual finalists (Hillcrest High School) 2-1 in pool play! A special mention to our Year 13's – Maureen Fitzpatrick, Marcella McGillivray & Nichole Loloselo who have played an instrumental part in the team's success, especially over the past two years. We are going to miss you all so much. It really has been a privilege to be able to coach you in your last year at Marist. Also, a very special thank you to Annie Jacob, who was AMAZING all week. Annie kept our girls in fine form by making sure they were as best prepared as possible. Thank you also to Sister Seini for your prayers and support throughout the week. Thanks also to all of our wonderful supporters who have supported us throughout the year and for those that made the trip down to Christchurch.

Hockey – Mary Clinton TournamentThis year the Hockey 1XI travelled to Whanganui to compete in the Mary Clinton Tournament. Day one had one pool game against Freyburg College. Our team played really well in the first two quarters. However, Freyburg really stepped it up with some very slick passing and the game ended with a 0:4 loss for us.Day two we played one game against Katikati High School and one game against Tararua College. Unfortunately despite playing some great hockey, we lost both of these games; 0:2 against Katikati, and 1:5 against Tararua. Our first goal of the tournament was scored by Emily Rednall. Freyburg went on to win the tournament, Katikati finished 5th and Tararua finished 9th, so I think we were in a fairly strong pool! The team were all very sad to see Xavia Hayward return to Auckland on Wednesday after becoming unwell. We didn’t have a game until 4:30pm on day three, so we took the opportunity to do a bit of sightseeing before preparing for our game against the home team, Whanganui Girls. This was a very closely fought game, with us finally scoring early in the fourth quarter with a goal from Talia Schofield. The game ended on a 1:1 draw so went to penalty shoot out. This really put the pressure on. At the end of the shoot out the result was still a draw with two goals each which meant that we went to sudden death shoot outs, which we won.The team were pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Mrs Taulu on Thursday morning. She had flown down to watch us play against ACG Strathallen and was on the same flight as their principal! Both teams played really well. Marist had the majority of possession but despite 13 shots on goal we lost 0:2. This loss put us into play offs for 11th and 12th on the last day. Our final game was against Heretaunga College. We went out strongly and a goal from Mariana Foster in the first quarter put us in the lead and we were able to hold Heretaunga out to win 1:0 and finish the tournament in 11th place – 3 places better than last year. Our MVP for the tournament was Laci Sampson for her consistently strong play in defense. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support and to those who were not able to join us but sent delicious food, positive vibes and supportive comments.Thank you to Mrs Taulu for taking the time to come along to support us, and for the inspiring speech you gave after our game. This was truly appreciated. A big thank you to Blair Wadman and Graham Farrelly for all of the time and energy you have put into this team. It has been fantastic to see the team grow over the season. Finally thanks also to Milla Farac, not only for your positive leadership of the team this year but also for the contributions you have made to the 1XI over the past 4 years. We will miss you next year but wish you well in your future endeavours.

  • HOCKEYMarist Gold vs Eden Roskill AndersonIt was the last game of the season and Marist Gold went into high gear. Within five minutes Emily scored and not longer after Michayla pocketed two. Wow they were on fire. Anderson spent most of their time on defence.Second half, Marist Gold went all out with five more goals: Isy and Emily with two, Michayla and Jessica got her first for the season. Final score 8:0 to Marist Gold. Awesome work and what a way to finish off the season. Player of the day went to Amber. A big thank to Mariana and Sophie for all their hard work as coaches to this fab team.

Marist BlueAwesome...Marist win 4-3! Down 3-1 at half time. Marist were a bit tentative in the first half. The half time talk from coach Lily worked a treat. They passed well and worked back into the game, worked into spaces and used the wingers. All the girls should be really proud of their progress for only picking up hockey for the first time. A big thankyou to our awesome coach Lily Crawford. What a great season Marist Blue have had.

FOOTBALLMarist GoldHi team and families, thank you for the joy you have given this season. A hard fought game was played. After a slow start which saw us shocked by two early goals, we came back. Paige despite her sore knee made some awesome saves. The second half saw us a more determined team with some wonderful shots on goal. Claudias shot was awesome. Ava's corner, which resulted in Pippa's goal was a stunner. Then we had a highly energetic Charleigh in goal who was on fire. So many shots came at her that she even stopped one off the goal line. The St Marys supporters were impressed. This effort assisted in keeping the score respectable at 3:1 to St Mary's. Thanks team. We will see you at AIMS.

Marist Rebels A great game by the Rebels. Good combinations and passing resulted in some awesome goals. It is wonderful to see how individuals have progressed this year. Our set piece corners were on fire tonight resulting in two goals. Ultimately the team won 3:1 against Baradene. Player of the day was Sylvie. Thanks for a great season from Neil and Nina. See you next year or at Futsal.

    BADMINTON

The girls suffered a delay due to bus circumstances. However, the girls still managed to play their games despite arriving late to Mt. Roskill. Marist A played against Marist 4 and won 6:0. Marist 3 won 3:3 in a tie-breaker against Marist B. Marist 1 won 5:1 against Lynfield Yellow and Marist 2 lost to Lynfield Red, 4:2. Overall the girls played their best and were not discouraged by the late bus. This week's achievement was the patience the girls had while waiting for the bus. It was a wonderful display of true Marist spirit!

    SPORTS UPDATE

The Year 7 & 8 Water Polo team played in the final for their grade in the Year 7 & 8 Water Polo League on Friday night, 6 September, at Diocesan pool. The competition has run over Terms 2 & 3 and has involved a big commitment from the girls, their parents and coaches, training on Sunday afternoons and playing on Friday nights.

The girls played very well as a team to defeat Mt Roskill Intermediate Black 11 – 4 in the final. The girls played hard but fair and represented Marist with true Marist Spirit. They were a credit to the school and their parents. Goal scoring was spread across 5 players, Freya D’Souza, Ashleigh Edwards, Lucy Doran, Melita Simpson and Sylvie Nolan.

The team went through the season unbeaten and are to be congratulated on winning Marist’s first gold medal in Water Polo. We also thank Sophie and Grace for their dedication to this team and giving up their time to coach the girls. Well done everyone.

The parish of St. Joseph’s Grey Lynn formally invites you to our very own

Vocations Expo of 2019This past year our parish has targeted the theme of “YoungPeople,Faith&VocationalDiscernment” from the 2018 Synod. This Vocations Expo will be a great opportunity to further showcase, explore and discern vocations to our young people in the school community. Please join us on Saturday the 5th of October at 8:15am, for the celebration of the Eucharist beforehand. Our programme will then start accordingly.

The National Centre for Religious Studies1, the Centre for Science and Citizenship2, and The Nathaniel Centre3 wish to understand young people’s thinking about some significant issues of our times. To do this, they are inviting all Year 13 students in Catholic schools across the country to take part in a short, anonymous online survey called “What Is Your Stand?” Each question in the survey outlines a particular issue and asks the student where they stand on this issue. They are then asked to provide reasons for their stance. The results of the surveys will be used to improve the national Catholic Religious Education Curriculum. The results will also provide insights into the ways that young people are responding to the world in which they find themselves and the ethical issues that arise here. The survey is the first step of a larger project in which the researchers will explore (via focus groups) how young people are conceptualising and navigating the ethical challenges with which they are confronted.
