O Lord, you had just cause to judge men as you did: because we sinned against you and disobeyed your will. But now show us your greatness of heart, and treat us with your unbounded kindness.

Entrance Antiphon

After Jesus had finished teaching the disciples, John said to him, “Teacher; we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believes in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown in to the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.”

Gospel Mark 9.38-43, 45, 47-48

No. 407 (Gather) Praise To You, O Christ Our Saviour

Entrance Song

Let us pray (for the peace of the kingdom which we have been promised). Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in your unbounded mercy you have revealed the beauty of your power though your constant forgiveness of our sins. May the power of this love be in our hearts to bring your pardon and your kingdom to all we meet. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Opening prayer

Numbers 11.16, 17, 25-29

First reading

The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

Response 8.30am

No. 20 Gather) Lord, You Have The Words

Response 6.00pm & 10.30am

Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days. Listen! The wages of the labourers who moved your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who does not resist you.

Second reading A reading from the letter of James 5.1-6

Alleluia, alleluia! Your word, O Lord, is truth: make us holy in the truth. Alleluia!

Gospel Acclamation 8.30am

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Passing Of A Landmark. The Sacristan’s Cottage of St. Canice’s

The Catholic Press - 11th April 1940

A loved landmark has been lost to the people of St. Canice’s Elizabeth Bay, the demolition of the cottage in the church grounds. The increase of traffic on Bayswater road necessitated the widening of the intersection at Roslyn Street, and so the fate of the cottage was sealed. St.Canice’s Church was built in 1888, but the cottage was much older than that; it had passed the century. When the church grounds were a part of the gentleman’s estate, more than a hundred years ago, the cottage served as a lodge. It was then surrounded by fruit and flower gardens. When this property was sub-divided, Mr Hughes, Father of the late Sir Thomas Hughes, bought a portion of it. Besides the small lodge, there was a spacious cottage on this part of the property, and when the Lewisham Sisters, sisters of the Little Company of Mary, came to Sydney, Mr Hughes put his house at their disposal until such time as their convent was ready to receive them. In those days St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Sacred Heart Church were the only Catholic churches in the locality, and Mr Hughes donated the land for St. Canice’s Church; he and others of his family, provided one-third of the money necessary to build the edifice. St. Canice’s was built as a chapel of ease attached to St. Mary’s. The lodge became the sacristan’s cottage, and with its arched windows it looked well suited to its new dignity. It is 40 years since the present sacristan Miss H Mahoney came with her father to the cottage. Both father and daughter gave faithful and loving service to His priests.

Having completed the four meetings on the Letter to the Philippians – imperfectly certainly, but as well as we could – our tiny discussion group, under Fr Steve’s guidance, has decided on another project. Over coming months we are going to sample some notable introductions to Catholicism. The idea is to try them out on ourselves in the first instance. Then, ultimately, we may come up with some way, or ways, we could recommend confidently to anybody wanting to find out more about the faith and the Catholic Church. We all know the problem: what have we to offer when someone, for whatever reason, expresses an interest in Catholicism? Do we simply hand them the ‘Catechism of the Catholic Church’? Or the more recent ‘Compendium’? Are there sites on the Internet we can refer them to? Or useful books they might read? These are some of the questions we will be trying to answer. To begin, we will discuss an extract from a well-known book Catholicism, written by Fr Henri de Lubac SJ, to be circulated either by email or in photocopied form. If you are interested in joining in the discussion, please contact Fr Steve, or the Parish Office, or email Kevin Walsh <[email protected]> and we will send you the material. The first meeting is to take place in the Presbytery after morning Mass on Wednesday 7 October.
