The cover page image serves several purposes.

• Firstly, it reminds us of three recent events in the calendar of the Church celebrated at Sunday Masses during June. The first was the Ascension of Jesus into heaven; the second was Pentecost Sunday, celebrating the birthday of the Church and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles; the third was the feast of the Most Holy Trinity.

• Secondly, it reminds us of the importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation, which Bishop Michael has been conferring on candidates during parish visits. Confirmation strengthens us in faith and increases the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit in us: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.

• Thirdly, it links us to the visit of Bishop Pompallier in 1840, when, as he approached Otago Heads on his ship, the ‘Sancta Maria’, he blessed, in the name of the Trinity, the land that lay before him.

Whenever we look around us, we can remind ourselves that, whatever our trials and tribulations, we continue to live in a blessed land, then pause to count our blessings, and make the Sign of the Cross.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

The St Francis Trust continues its journey walking alongside people in a spirit of friendship and seeking better financial solutions.

In the past 6 years we have become known in the community through our outreach activities, our network of agencies and groups in Dunedin and nationally, and by providing focussed support for local/regional individuals in need of help.

Client contact often begins when individuals are faced with stressful financial situations which can lead to emergency loans or other Trust support. However, the journey often progresses to a longer-term relationship by assistance with budget advice, WINZ or other services, or provision of material help. In some instances where clients have successfully managed their financial issues, they offer donations back to the emergency fund, which can feel very empowering.

Our community support worker, together with Catholic Social Services and a network of other agencies such as St Vincent de Paul, enables us to make personal contact with individuals in need. We have learned there are many solutions to clients’ issues, and loans are often a last resort. Finding a solution with the client and staying in contact offers an outreached hand rather than just a hand-out.

St Francis of Assisi Dunedin TrustEngaged with community, agencies and government for better financial outcomes.

The Trust also works with local and national groups interested in addressing high debt in New Zealand. Our key partners are Lending Matters (Dunedin) and Ngā Tangata Microfinance Trust (Manukau), and we also participate in the national organization FinCap. In collaboration with our partners, we endeavour to provide feedback to government on policy development in the areas of microfinance, debt, third tier lending, poverty and related issues.

We are very grateful for the donations given to us in the past year for our Community worker, Gerry O’Farrell. He is working closely with Catholic Social Services to help make a difference to people who are struggling financially. We would be most appreciative of further donations to continue to support our Community worker and offer Emergency Funds.

We were excited to be using the national website resource ‘Faith Journey’ for the first time, with material compiled by Jo Bell of Dunedin. During a fun-filled day we learnt about how everything changed when Jesus rose from the dead; reflected on things we do to celebrate Easter; considered the meaning of the Paschal Candle and generally had a lot of fun with craft, singing, drama and games. It is great to see parents becoming more involved with the day’s activities as this can only enrich their children’s experience. Thank you to those families for making this day a priority in their busy lives.

Special thanks goes to Lucy Swain and Ryan Watkins, Head Students of St Peter’s College Gore, who, along with senior students, Tom Dennison, Sam Mckenzie, Isabella Burns and Trelise Wadsworth, stepped up to fully lead the day with support from myself, Susan Rowley. It is always a win for everyone with our competent and friendly students contributing a youthful touch to the day.

Junior Craft – We made candle collage pictures to remind us that Jesus’ light shines in us.

Senior Craft – Our Paschal Candles remind us that we too are called to be light for those around us.

Bushy School News: Jesus – Our Light at Eastercontributed by susan rowley

Bushy Schoolers gathered in Gore recently from the rural areas of Winton, Tuatapere, Balfour, Myross Bush, Otautau and Arrowtown to explore their understanding in a day themed Jesus – Our Light at Easter’.

Caring Compassionate Service

Across New Zealand, Caritas marked the National Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants on Sunday, 23 June. The day is set aside each year to fall as closely as possible to the internationally celebrated World Refugee Day on 20 June. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand prepared resources for parishes and schools across the country to share the words of Pope Francis and encourage compassion and love in welcoming migrants into our communities.

In 2017, Caritas Internationalis, the network of global Caritas agencies, launched a worldwide campaign, Share the Journey, promoting empathy toward migrants and refugees. “The future is made of us, let’s Share the Journey” is inspired by Pope Francis’ message during his TED talk in 2017.

Pope Francis has continued to speak for the migrants, refugees, displaced persons and victims of trafficking who, he says have become “emblems of exclusion.” In his message for 2019, Pope Francis voices concern at an increasingly individualistic society. He reminds us that the future of humankind is up to us, not just politicians, leaders or big companies. He emphasises the need for each other. When it comes to refugees and migrants, the ‘other’ is not just a statistic or a number – the ‘other’ has a face. They are a real presence; a person of innate dignity.

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand Director, Julianne Hickey, says "Pope Francis is telling us it is not just about migrants. It is about the whole person, it is about all of us. When we take care of others, then we all grow.”

As part of the Share the Journey campaign, Caritas Internationalis launched a collage at their General Assembly in May 2019. The

woman represented in the collage is Nasrin, 21, who works with Rohingya children as part of Caritas Bangladesh’s efforts to provide safe spaces. Nasrin represents the tenacity and tenderness of all the Caritas workers who accompany migrants and refugees. The collage features hundreds of photos of migrants and refugees, world leaders, and Caritas staff. It depicts that despite our differences, we are one humanity. Towards the end of the General Assembly, Pope Francis pasted in the wedding photo of his parents. His father Mario was a migrant who came from Italy to Argentina in the 1920s.

Ms Hickey, who was at the General Assembly says, “The call to action for us on this Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants is reflecting on how we might better ‘Share the Journey’ with refugees and migrants around the world. As Pope Francis says, our vision needs to include the verbs ‘welcome’', ‘protect’, ‘promote’ and ‘integrate’”.

Food for Critical ReflectionThe Pope, the grandmother and the grandchild: faith without words

‘I am nearly finished, I have just one more paragraph, but I still want to tell you about an experience I had just as I was coming into the Square. There was an elderly lady, quite elderly, a grandmother. In her arms she held her grandchild, about two months old, not more. As I passed by, she showed me the child. She smiled; it was a knowing smile, as if she was saying to me: ‘Look, now I can dream!’ I was very moved in that moment and I didn’t have the courage to go and bring her up here (onto the stage). That’s why I am telling you. Grandparents dream when their grandchildren go forward, and grandchildren have courage when they take their roots from their grandparents’.

Earlier, during his prepared speech, the Pope told the young people present at the event: ‘As you continue to grow in every way – stronger, older and even in importance – do not forget the most beautiful and worthwhile lesson you learned at home. It is the wisdom that comes from age. When you grow up, do not forget your mother and your grandmother, and the simple but robust faith that gave them the strength and tenacity to keep going and not to give up. It is a reason for you to give thanks and to ask for the generosity, courage and selflessness of a ‘home-grown’ faith that is unobtrusive, yet slowly but surely builds up the Kingdom of God’.

On other occasions, Pope Francis has recounted his personal experience with his own grandmother, Rosa, a woman of faith who came from a peasant family in Piedmont, Italy, and emigrated to Argentina to escape poverty. During the Pentecost Vigil of 2013, the Pope said it was his grandmother who first transmitted the Christian faith to him.

‘I had the grace to grow up in a family where faith was lived in a simple and concrete way; but it was above all my grandmother, my father’s mother, who marked my path of faith. She was a woman who explained to us, who spoke to us about Jesus, who taught us the Catechism. I always remember that on Good Friday evening she would take us to the candlelight procession, and at the end of this procession… my grandmother would make us children kneel, and she would say: ‘Look, he is dead, but tomorrow he will rise again’. I received the first Christian announcement from this woman, from my grandmother! That’s beautiful! The first announcement at home, with the family! And this makes me think of the love of many mothers and grandmothers in the transmission of the faith. It is they who transmit the faith’.

monday 3 june 2019

On his visit to Romania, Pope Francis exchanged smiles with an elderly woman and her grandchild, and invited young people not to forget their roots.

As the Pope was passing by on his way to the meeting with young people and families in Lasi, a proud grandmother held up her grandchild for him to bless. Pope Francis used that image to make a point at the end of his discourse.

Speaking off the cuff, he said:

In November 2017, the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference asked the New Zealand Catholic Education Office to review the National Attendance Dues and Capital Indebtedness Sharing Scheme to ensure that it remains fit for purpose. This is the scheme to which the Diocese of Dunedin contributes attendance dues revenue, in return for having the substantial debts on our schools serviced from the national fund.

The Financial Review Panel presented its report, “Sustainable Catholic Education in New Zealand,” to the Bishops and other Proprietors at the end of April and through May 2019.

Consultation is continuing about the report’s recommendations before decisions for change are agreed and implemented.

Bishop Michael, as Proprietor of Catholic schools of the diocese, has decided to hold the 2020 attendance dues rates at current levels while the national consultation is still in progress.

The rates are: Primary (Year 1 - 8) $450.00 per annum, incl. GST. and Secondary (Year 9 - 13) $875.00 per annum, incl. GST.

Pope Francis, when first elected, remarked that a church that turns in on itself becomes sick. Ever since, Pope Francis has modelled a Church that reaches out and seeks out those on the margins. There are many inspiring examples in our own diocese of parishioners who take up the call of Jesus to reach out in a spirit of love and friendship.

As a people of faith we experience the invitation to enter into the mystery of God’s life; that is the crux of our baptism. As we are drawn into the mystery of Jesus and come to know him better we will discover a growing desire within us to join with Christ in building up the Reign of God, to help build up a world that is loving and just and kind. It is in response to this call of Christ that we continue with the mission of Jesus and this can be seen in the many good activities that occur every day. We can look to the honourable and generous actions of individuals involved in our parishes, schools and diocese by which the touch of Jesus is extended to others. This is our diocese’s mission and outreach. This is why the Catholic Caring Foundation is such an important aspect of our diocese’s life.

My first appeal to you is not for funds, rather I make an appeal to every parish and school and church group in the diocese to consider opportunities for pastoral and community outreach. What can your parish or group do to support the disadvantaged, help young people grow in their faith and to asssist recent migrants and refugees to feel at home? What can you do to provide encouragement to those going through difficult times? How has your parish taken up Pope Francis’ challenge to care for our common home? I know of many wonderful examples of pastoral outreach in our diocese and I encourage us all to seek to hear the voice of Jesus who calls us to help create a more loving and just world.

Encouraging and Supporting Pastoral Care and Outreach

• The Catholic Caring Foundation

• The Tindall Foundation The Tindall Foundation The Tindall Foundation has for many years entered into partnership with our diocese, contributing nearly $30,000.00 a year towards our pastoral outreach. Last year The Catholic Caring Foundation and the Tindall Foundation provided support for many different groups. The biggest benefactor was Catholic Social Services and we can be rightly proud of the work done by CSS to support families, build up community networks, assist people through crises in their lives and enable parents in the challenging task of being Mums and Dads in today’s world.

We are also proud to support the Edmund Rice Camps. A large number of young people give generously of their time to offer a camp experience to young people going through difficult times. It is pleasing to be able to support them with some funding.

In 2018 we also provided support for a newly established youth group offering guidance to young Filipino people. Other activities funded were the Social Justice Hui, a Community Garden at St Francis Xavier school and a Community worker aligned with the St Francis Trust and Mercy Parish.

We would love to be supporting more activities this year.

There will be a special Caring Sunday Appeal on Sunday, 28 July 2019. There is also a donation slip below which includes bank details for those wishing to make an online payment. We also invite you to consider becoming a regular contributor by making automatic payments. If you make an online donation please use your name as a reference and contact the Bishop’s Secretary with your details so a tax receipt can be issued: [email protected]. Please note that all money contributed to the Caring Foundation goes directly to the support of pastoral work in our parishes and diocese.

Thank you for the suppport you can offer in our mission of pastoral care and outreach in the Diocese.

Yours in Christ

Rakauhauka, a small farming area north-east of Invercargill, was settled at least thirty years before the opening of St Patrick’s Church. Mass was celebrated in private homes and in the Grove Bush school before the church was opened on 4 November,1894.

The church served Grove Bush, Mabel Bush, Roslyn Bush, Hedgehope, Dacre, Morton Mains, Woodland and Long Bush districts. These names are now better known than the central point chosen for the site of the church.

Many of the early settler families had arrived from Ireland, and they would gather after Mass and converse in their native Gaelic tongue.

A member of a pioneering family, Mr W Scully, donated the land for the construction of the church, which

was initially part of St Mary’s parish, Invercargill. For many years now it has been part of Sacred Heart parish, Waikiwi. The first parish priest was Father Nicholas Vereker. The present parish priest is Father Tony Harrison, the eighteenth priest to have served the area.

The families of the parish have contributed richly to priestly and religious vocations by providing two priests, Fathers John Fotheringham, SM, and Melville Caulfield, SM, and fifteen Women Religious and one Marist Brother.

Bishop Michael Dooley will attend the celebrations which will be held on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November. On Saturday afternoon a liturgical service in memory of deceased parishioners and priests will be held

in the church followed in the evening by a Jubilee Dinner at the Ascot Park Hotel, Invercargill. On Sunday morning the Jubilee Mass in the church will be followed by lunch at the Ascot. Historical displays, including photos and memorabilia, will be set up for viewing at the hotel.

Registration is now open. Former parishioners, priests, religious and descendants of early families are most welcome to attend.
