It hurts to be excluded. God makes all things new, though, and our scriptures today invite us to turn over our aching hearts to the Lord. Some of us might feel reluctant to give our hearts to the Lord, especially if our suffering somehow involves God or the Church. Why pour out hearts to God, after all, if God seems to be the cause of our troubles? A tragic loss, a painful death, or an unavoidable catastrophe can disrupt or destroy our life plans. When people clumsily console us then, saying, “It’s God’s will,” we can easily become suspicious of God and the almighty will. If we suffer from the sinful structures or actions of God’s representatives and ministers in the Church, we might look with skepticism at the prayers of that same Church. Even so, our Canaanite woman today persuades us not to lose hope. The disciples scorn her, complaining that she “keeps calling” out for help. Like irritable children, the disciples ask Jesus to “send her away.” And just when we might expect Jesus to take her side, to scold the disciples and reward the woman’s persistence, he shocks us by implying she is a dog. Undaunted, the woman accepts Jesus’ remark and parlays its aggression into her own force- ful plea: “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” ACCEPTED The woman’s faith is irresistible—to Jesus, and to us. Jesus grants her heart’s desire, healing her daughter from that very moment. We too are won over by her indomitable confidence in the Lord. Truly, this woman is one of the heroes of the New Testament. When difficulties suffocate us and we feel turned away like a stray dog, we can recall the Canaanite woman’s simple words: “Lord, help me.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. VIGÉSIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO:

    20 DE AGOSTO

CEMETERY HOURS Saint Patrick Catholic Cemetery is open from

    8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.

  • KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Knights of Columbus wish everyone a happy week with good health and many blessings. As a friendly reminder to please join us at our monthly pancake breakfast after today’s 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses. Do come and partake in a great breakfast alongside fellow parishioners. No events are planned for the month of August for us, Knights, and September looks quite the same except for our pancake breakfast. That means that you should be ready to go for all our October events such as our Walk for Life, a dinner theater, and, you guessed it, pancake breakfast as always. Thank you for all the continued support.

    God bless,

    Jose Garcia, Grand Knight

IMPROVEMENT FUND: MONTHLY REPORT We are in the second month since the start of the Improvement Fund. The Improvement Fund will help in many projects that are planned for our parish, aside from daily operations. A couple of these projects are major, and will take time to complete, but this second collection is the first step in achieving these projects. It would be overwhelming to make a list of the much needed improvements for our parish, but we will name a few: the heating and air units in the church, classrooms, Gurnell Hall, and Cantwell Hall are approaching the end of their lifespan, the phone system in place is outdated, and the irrigation system of our landscaping is not functioning properly. In July, thanks to your generous donations, $1,368.00 was collected for the Saint James Improvement Fund and $8,394.44 for the Saint Patrick Improvement Fund. Thank you for your generosity!

UPPER ROOM NEWS: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Upper Room is in need of volunteers. We need help with cooking and serving. The cooking shift starts at noon and goes to 3:30 p.m. and the serving shift is from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Are you holding back from volunteering because you do not have experience? Don’t worry! No experience is required since training will be provided. This is a very rewarding experience as you provide to others what many of us may take for granted: a hot meal. Do not forget that we are all here to serve one anther. Please call the Upper Room, at 530-621-7730, for additional information or to sign up! SEASONS OF HOPE FALL SESSION “Seasons of Hope”, a support group for those who have suffered the death of a loved one, begins a new six-week program on Monday, September 11th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in Gurnell Hall Lounge. If you have any questions or need more information, please call Carol Davis at 530.748.9337.

FAITHWORKS NEWS Calling all High School youth! We welcome you to join FaithWorks, St. Patrick’s Youth Group. Keep up to date on what we are doing by joining our group on Facebook or contacting Jennifer Lubenko at 530.409.605 [email protected] or Wendy Cirimele at 916.267.7763 [email protected]. You may also contact the Faith Formation office for additional information at 530.622.7692.
