I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live forever. (Jn. 6:51)

PARISH INFORMATION Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven‑sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - After resting and taking
nourishment twice, Elijah is strengthened to walk to the mountain of God, Horeb (1 Kings 19:4-8).
Psalm - Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34).
Second Reading - Be sealed by the Holy Spirit of God so as to be imitators of God and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 — 5:2).
Gospel - Jesus professes that he is the living bread and whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6:41-51).

Lord, hear our prayer For any typographical errors,

Da mihi animas cetera tolle. Give me souls, take away the rest. (Don Bosco’s motto)
HE could have been a biologist or any other profes-sional or even a family man; but he just could not shake away his love to be a priest. It would not go away.
That love blossomed recently into some-thing far beyond his expectations: a call from the Office of Los Angeles Archbish-op Jose H. Gomez, appointing him Admin-istrator of St. Dominic Savio Parish. The new appointee is 43. “It was scary,” Fr. Chinh laughed. “I did not expect that call. It came from nowhere. Officially, this assignment was effective July 1, 2015. This is my first Parish assign-ment.” Fr. Chinh’s journey to the priesthood has revolved around how much the Lord loves him; how much he loves the Lord in return; and the hurdles he cleared to get this far. At age 12, he and his father escaped by boat from war-torn Vietnam, leaving his mother, three brothers and a sister behind. Father and son ended up in refugee camps in Malaysia and in the Philippines… desti-nation unknown. But the Lord decreed otherwise. In 1985, father and son arrived in Stockton, Califor-nia, to be reunited later with the whole family. To Fr. Chinh, this was a very high turning point in their lives. “This was His gift to the family,” he gushed. “How can I thank Him for this gift?” Fr. Chinh said this incident sealed his deci-sion to be a priest. A much younger broth-er, also a Salesian priest, is now assigned in Berkeley, California. Their parents cur-rently live in Modesto. Stockton Diocese Bishop Stephen Blair ordained Fr. Chinh in Stockton in 2006. In that same year, he finished his Theology
Studies in Berkeley at GTU (Graduate Theological Union. After ordination, he served as teacher and Coordinator of Youth Ministry at St. John Bosco High School, Bellflower. Soon after, he served as Provicincial Vocational Direc-tor at the Salesian facility in Rosemead, California. Fr. Chinh confided, “I have to look around; meet with the various ministries, and de-cide on what needs to be done. I am inter-ested in having an appropriate open-air facility where people can pray… just like they do in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. I want to build a bigger community of deep faith.” Our new Administrator said he spends some time preparing his homilies. He med-itates on the week’s Readings and the Gos-pel; jots down reminders, important points, and thoughts that lend substance to his presentation. By mid-week, his homily is ready, but subject to events that need to be addressed right away. “I like to relate to people,” he said. “I don’t feel at ease delivering my homilies from just one spot. I have energy. I need to move around. Although I celebrate Mass also in my na-tive tongue, I do most of my Masses in English. I have been in America for 30 years. I am more fluent in English.” Months ago, a member of the 11:30 A.M. Mass Choir wished loudly she’d relish having Fr. Chinh to be Pastor at Savio. Transaltion: she loves his homilies. Informed about this, Fr. Chinh broke into a wide smile, leaned back in his chair, raised his hands, as if in supplication, and said, “Is that so?” Fr. Chinh loves to leave spiritual food for the week. It could be a thought or two to think about. His favorite quotation is this line from Don Bosco: “Learn to make yourself loved.”

A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM FR. CHINH NGUYEN, SDB Dear Saint Dominic Parishioners, Thank you for the warm welcome I have received from all of you at Saint Dominic Savio Parish. I feel great joy to celebrate Mass with you, as well as getting to know you through community in fellowship. Recently, we celebrated at our Church the ordination of Father Kristian Laygo, who is being assigned to this Parish. We are very happy to have him as part of our Salesian family. Many of you already participate in many different services we offer to meet the spiritual needs of our community. Some of these services are religious education for children as well as outreach programs for the youth, young adult, parents and senior citizens. If you are not a participant yet, we would love to have you join us if you wish to do so. We are also very proud to offer a great elementary school run by the Salesian Sisters. I invite you to join our Community Celebration of the Bicentennial of Saint John Bosco’s Birth, a three- day celebration from August 14 to August 16. This October, we will be having a Fall Fiesta. Our committee is working very hard to make it a success (which we have no doubt it will be). However, we need your help with this fund raiser by buying and selling tickets. Ticket prices are $2.00 each or a book (of tickets) is $50.00. For every book you sell you will get 10 free tickets. Please read the weekly bulletin which provides additional information of all the upcoming events and activities in our church. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Chinh Nguyen, Administrator
