ASCENSION OF THE LORD

MISSION STATEMENT Today we celebrate Christ's ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke's de-scription of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark's account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus' name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our par-ishes and corporations, this mis-sion statement can help us set priorities and focus our activi-ties. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ's messianic mission on earth.

GLADDEN US WITH HOLY JOYS, ALMIGHTY GOD, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

MEN OF GALILEE, WHY GAZE IN WONDER AT THE HEAVENS? THIS JESUS WHOM YOU SAW ASCENDING INTO HEAVEN WILL RETURN AS YOU SAW HIM GO, ALLELUIA. ACTS 1:11

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother's Day is over. "Mothering Sunday" was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their "Mother Church." Often, people were reunit-ed with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their work-ers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of moth-ers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother's Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war.

Let us love one another as Christ has loved us (3) by offering himself for our sins (2). His love is to be revealed to all the world (Ps), as Pe-ter himself taught (1).

FIRST READING — ACTS 10:25-26 The gift of the Holy Spirit

was poured out on the Gentiles also.

RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 98 The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

SECOND READING — 1 JOHN 4:7-10 God is love.

GOSPEL — JOHN 15:9-17 No one has greater love than this:

to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Stepping Stones

Thank you to everyone, who completed our survey for the design of our new church! We appreciate your input. Survey results will be given to the Core Team Design Com-mittee, who will:

• begin work on design proposals for our new church and project costs based on assessment results

• gather architectural qualifications and select architect

As a parish, we will submit a proposed building design to the bishop, who has the responsibility of approving the design or asking for modifications. As a parish, we want the bishop and our future architect to understand what is important to our parishioners. Therefore, your feedback will be valuable in helping to inform the design that the parish submits to the bishop and in explaining why various features are important to our parish community.

Our 3rd grade is one of six schools around the nation awarded a generous grant from the Nation-al Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) that was inspired by MonarchRescue.org and Pope Francis’ call for environmental stewardship to help bring an increase in the Monarch population. This is year three of our butterfly garden. We worked to spread soil and plant monarch attracting plants this week in this beautiful weather. Thank you 3rd grade for your hard work!

We have six nominees for Parish Council. Next weekend, on May 19 and 20, we will vote at Mass to fill three vacancies.

You are eligible to vote if you are: A registered member of the parish and 18 years old or over.

Thank you to all of our wonderful nominees!

I am interested in serving on St. Joseph Parish Council for the following rea-sons: I believe that anyone who wishes to serve on the Parish Council should understand that he/she serves the whole parish and not just one part of it. I believe that all Parish Council members must be clear about their responsibilities of time and effort, and about the respective roles of the council and pastor. I think that my fiscal experience as a small business owner, as well my love of St. Jo-seph Church and School will meet those responsibilities. Family Information: In 2002, I married T.J. Barnes, also a lifelong Catholic, and we have two wonderful children, a daughter Taylor who is 13 and in the 7th grade and our son Tate who is 10 and in the 4th grade. Both our children attend St. Joseph Catholic School and have since Pre-K 3. My husband is the Athletic Director, Coach, and teacher of PE & Health at St. Joseph Catholic School. Educational Background: I earned my undergraduate degree in Biology from Coe College in 1989. I then pursued a doctor-

ate degree in Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry, in Chicago. Business Experience:

Business experience: I practiced Optometry in Chicago for 8 years prior to moving to Northwest Arkansas 15 years ago. I am the owner and Optometric Physician of Davis Eye Associates, now located at 2901 E. Zion, here in Fayetteville. I have owned my own business since I graduated from Optometry School 23 years ago.

Address:

3332 E. Carmel Lane, Fayetteville, AR 72701 How long a member of St. Joseph in Fayetteville?

Our family have been members of St. Joseph Catholic Church since 2008 Community involvement/volunteerism

I have volunteered on many committees for both the Church & School, including chairing the main school fundraiser, the an-nual “Fiesta”, for 3 years. Prior to having our children, I was very active in Junior League. I am a volunteer of our parish ado-ration for 1 hour every week!

I am interested in serving on St. Joseph Parish Council for the following reasons:

St. Joseph’s Church has always been very close to my heart and I am very devoted to both the church and the school. I at-tended St. Joseph School from kindergarten through middle school and have been a parishioner at the church ever since. Parish Council would provide me the chance to give back to St. Joseph for all the years it has provided me with a strong and supportive community. In 1 Peter 4:10, Peter says that “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” Through Parish Council I hope to utilize my skills and ideas to serve the church in any way I can. I will not only be able to provide financial help for the Parish and Finance Council, but also pro-vide meaningful insights to connect with and appeal to younger parishioners. I believe my experiences and skills would make me a great candidate for parish council.

Family Information: My immediate family all resides in Fayetteville, Arkansas. My mother and father are Andy and Michelle Hightower. My mom is

Family Information: My wife, Beth, and I have been married for 9 years. We have two sons: Thomas (6) and Nicho-las (1). Thomas attends St. Joseph School. Educational Background: Purdue University, MA, 2006. University of Iowa, BA, 2004. Business Experience: Senior Manager in Market Research at Mars-Wrigley Confectionery. 12 years in Market Research and 8 in the Walmart vendor community.

I am interested in serving on St. Joseph Parish Council for the following rea-sons: Being nominated for the Parish Council makes me think, wow, I must be getting old. I grew up in the Sacred Heart parish of Charleston, just east of Fort Smith. I care about my salvation, that of my wife and children, and all our St. Joseph’s family. I believe we are all called to make a differ-ence. I see the effort of our parish Priests, parish and school staff, and ministry volunteers at St. Joseph’s, and am humbled and inspired. My hope is for our St. Joseph’s parishioners to be con-nected. I want our parishioners to be able share their joys of the glory of God, have a kindred family type relationship, and as a community of faith lift each other up during the hard times. Je-sus came to this World to light it up, let us carry the light forward until we are called back to him. There is no doubt that having a personal relationship with God and his son Jesus has its daily struggles. I want everyone who attends St. Joseph’s or has knowledge of our parish to know they are cared about and supported in their walk with God. Is the role of St. Joseph’s at a pivotal time of history? I don’t know. Only time will tell. Maybe every day is a pivotal time for St. Joseph’s to be influential, regardless. I ask that you prayerfully consider who you vote for. If elected, I will take the responsibility of this position with great honor, humility, and of importance. If not, I will be at

peace with the confidence of who our parish does elect. May God bless us all! Family Information:
