Feb. 22 Ash Wednesday: Masses 6:30am & 7:30pm. Services 8 & 10am, 12noon, 4 & 5:30pm All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Good Friday. All persons who have completed their four-teenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to beginning of their sixtieth year. Lent is a time of penance which can consist of doing works of charity and piety, prayer, and almsgiving. The rule of fasting states that only one full meal may be taken per day. Two small meals, “sufficient to maintain strength,” are allowed but to-gether they should not equal another full meal. Easting between meals breaks the fast but drinking liquids does not. Abstinence refers to the eating meat of warm blooded animals (e.g. beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork). Those who are not able to observe the laws because of work or health related issued are excused from fasting and abstinence. Todos los viernes de la cuaresma son días de abstinencia. Abstinencia y el ayuno se debe observar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Todos que han cumplido catorce años deben observar la abstinencia; todo adulto está obligado por la ley del ayudo hasta que tenga sesenta años. (Personas que han llegado a los 18 años de edad son considerados adultos). La cuaresma es un tiempo de penitencia que consiste en hacer actos de caridad, piedad, ora-ción, y ayudar a los pobres. La regla del ayudo declara que únicamente una comida comple-ta se puede comer por día. Dos comida minores, “suficiente para sostener la fuerzas,” se permiten para que juntas no equivalen a una comida completa. El comer entre comidas es prohibido pero el tomar líquidos no. La abstinencia se refiere a carne de animales como car-ne vaca, cordero, pollo, pavo, y cerdo. Una seria razón debe estar presente para excusar la penitencia del Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. (Este método puede ayuda a pa-rejas cuando el varón o la mujer presentan señales de poca fertilidad.)
